We want to upgrade from Adobe Creative suite 1 to at least CS 3 at our office. We use mostly Illustrator and Photoshop. But the upgrade seems to be more important for Illustrator than photoshop.
-It needs to be relatively cheap to get approved so I am wondering the following:
a) Would it make sense to just upgrade illustrator or would that cause compatibility issues with the older version of photoshop?
b) We need to upgrade on 4 machines? How many upgrades would we need to buy.
c) What are the benefits of CS 4 vs CS 3?
d) Sicne CS4 is out does that mean CS 3 is cheaper?

In Photoshop 5.5 I was able to create an action to resize a layer/selection to a maximum width (say, 200 px). I could quickly select objects of varying initial sizes, run the action, and voila, everything fit neatly in a column. I've had Photoshop CS4 for over a week and can't figure out how to replicate this; my resizing seems to always be happening as a percent of the original size.

Whenever I try to write in really small characters in Photoshop, or, come to think of it, save anything small (like an company logo for email signatures) - it comes out all blurred. I'm saving as non-interlaced PNG but I think the same would happen if it were a JPEG.
I've had this problem for quite a while, through several different versions of Photoshop. At the moment I'm on CS4. Photoshop isn't really my thing, I use it for touching up digital photos, not creating logos - but it would be great to get this resolved once and for all: how can I create tiny images without pixelation/blurring.
Any help appreciated! Thank you!

Bail me out. I need to find the best place for my wife to get additional training on Adobe Photoshop in Washington DC. This is her (nail bitting) only Christmas present and I haven't found the perfect place yet. She's a budding photographer and has most of the professional equipment she needs (Nikon D300, New Desktop w/ CS4, etc). I would classify her as currently at the top end of the intermediate skill range. I'd prefer night time classes, but can arrange for day care if it is an excellent class. Anything below $2,000 works. Bonus points for anything that leads to any Adobe certifications. Thanks! Any other suggestions would be great as well (she's learning Fireworks and InDesign right now too).

I want to calculate the average contrast, luminance and any other interesting photo statistics (things that might be useful/important in psychophysics) for a bunch of images. I've heard that both Matlab and Photoshop can do this. I'm still trying to avoid learning Matlab, so Photoshop is preferred (I tried google, and some image manipulation books I found in the library, but neither were very helpful).

So, creative Mefites, tell me what you think!
