I have 4GB of photos spanning the last 7 years of my life - they're sitting on my linux webserver and the other day I compressed the directory using the gzip command while I reinstalled my photo album software.
When I went to extract the gz file, it just gives me an extensionless file as opposed to the directory structure that it once was.
I have a bad feeling the directory structure wasn't preserved when the file was compressed.
I have tried extracting it but to no avail but I know there are photos in there, because when I head the file there's a clear file name in it.
Is there anything I can do to get at least the files back? I don't care if I lose the directory structure at this point, just as long as I get the photos back.

What is the name of the picture site where you can search different categories of pictures (funny, sexy, sick, etc) and when You click on a pic, it shows you THAT picture and three others below it, smaller, in a similar vein?

We love to take pictures. Lots of them. And we want to love to tag them with metadata. XMP, IPTC, doesn't matter, as long as the metadata is IN THE FILE (for JPGs) and not in a sidecar file. We also love sharing our photos with family and friends (and just family and friends, thank you).

What's the best stock photo site (including pay sites)? Along the lines of
this question, I'm looking for a high-quality site that offers royalty-free stock photos. I'm looking for basic corporate techie stuff for an IT government (read:not-for-profit) web site - people working at a laptop, servers and wiring shot from cool angles, etc. The previous question brought up some good free stuff, but what about pay sites such as Corbis? I'd really like some sort of subscription-based setup instead of paying a la carte for each photo (if that even exists).

While on vacation, I bought a new camera but accidentally set the date to 2006, not 2007. I want to fix this, but keep still keep the dates in order. Is there a quick way to batch edit a large set of photos where I can simply roll the date forward a year instead of having to go in individually to change each date? I've found a mac program that does this, but have yet to find a windows one. Flickr has something similar, but you can only roll forward a couple of days.

I’m looking for a place to purchase high quality pictures (like 8x10 photos for matting and framing) of musicians/bands from the 50’s on up. Something similar to Photofile.com for sports pictures. Photofile has some music products however they have large minimum orders. Thanks so much for your time. Have a great one.

I'm looking for blogs that are focused on linking to good, interesting photos. The type of photo doesn't really matter. Photojournalism and fine art, landscapes, nature, street, wildlife, etc are all great (oversaturated stock photos that look like they belong on inspirational posters are not great). I'm not looking for blogs that feature the work of a single photographer. I am looking for blogs that express the POV of one person or a small group of people about what they find interesting.
