When did people start smiling for photographs? What is the oldest extant photograph of someone smiling (whether for the camera or incidentally)?

I just received an email from someone at an energy management company who is preparing a document for the U.S. Department of Energy. They found three of my photos from the
NYC August 2003 blackout on the web and are offering to purchase the rights for using them in this report. I can provide high-resolution photos to them, but have no idea how to estimate how much to charge them per photo. As an amateur photographer, how do you assign values to your photos for re-use?

I've started into my first serious foray into amateur photography. The only fully-manual camera I could get my hands on for free is 35mm, so I'm now confronted with a problem that I haven't really ever dealt with before: where to get it developed. I want digital scans of most of my photos, for easy storage and Flickring, and there are a number of corollary requirements as well.

I want to take some photos of locals around Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). I have two questions: One, is there anything I should know about taking pictures of people like this? I want to be as uninvasive and polite as possible, but I don't want to be a big dumb American screaming "HAY GUYS CAN I TAKE YOUR PHOTO?!" and acting like they're animals in a zoo. Two is a technical question about my Canon Powershot A35...

On flickr, why isn't there a method or hack to upload pictures WITH TAGS & DESCRIPTIONS from Adobe Elements Photo Album, or any other Windows based album software.
I'm not a programer, but it seems that the web savy community has come up with a solution to a new problem every day, why not this one?
Won't this be a useful solution?

For a design job, I need images of standard playing cards: both the faces and the backs. These will be for commercial sites (not personal use), so I need images that I can use legally (I can't credit the photographer). I prefer free, but will pay if I must. Vector is fine if it looks real. So is raster. On stock sites, I keep finding cards, but they are always shot from odd angles or are partially obscured.

I'm thinking of some artist who put together graphic renderings (orthogonal?) of various famous news photos -- the King assassination, the Buddhist monk immolating himself in Saigon, the beating of Reginald Denny -- and made them look like stills from computer games. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I'm going to be in Las Vegas this weekend with friends. Coincidentally, the new ultra-luxe Wynn casino and hotel is also opening there this weekend. The mainstream media has been
"prohibited" from publishing photos of its super-secret interior until
at least a week after the next issue of "Vanity Fair" hits the stands May 4th, since
VF got some sort of exclusive deal with Wynn. But ordinary Vegas tourists--and, presumably, our cameras--will be allowed in starting this weekend. If I take and upload photos of the hotel's interior to my blog or to a site like ourmedia.org while I'm in Vegas, the photos will beat VF by several days and the mainstream media by almost two weeks. If I license the photos under a non-commercial Creative Commons license and won't be profiting from them, would/could I get sued for breaking the media embargo?

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in the modern art/photography section there's a photo (from 1997 or thereabouts) of a man standing in a hotel room in a rainy day. It's a huge print, probably 5'x4', and is lit from behind. It's not on the Met's website. Does anyone know the name of the photo/photographer?

Digital fullfilment/Photography Question:
My sister's wedding had a large number of photographs taken by their friend who's a professional photographer, on his high end nikon Digital. He gave them the photos as a wedding gift, and they want people to be able to order prints on demand online.
however, they wanted to see if it were possible to tack on a small fee per photo and have the profit go to their friend.
1. What are some good print on demand sites (ofoto, etc?)
2. Do any of them allow this kind of thing?
Thanks in advance.

How useful / rewarding are you finding Flickr? Is it worth it for me to spend time uploading and tagging photos, and to bug my friends to join? It looks very cool and like a social network that's actually good for something: it also looks like kind of a lot of work, especially since I can't keep all my photos there or print pictures from Flickr.

i've got a client that is doing private investiations of insurance fraud cases, and has been writing up reports in MS Word and embedding photos of the casework into those .doc files. the problem is that he needs to email these files to his clients so they can be proofread and modified (i had suggested .PDF files until i realized the clients needed to be able to modify the reports). Unfortunately, these .doc files with images embeded end up roughly 15 MB in size each, and become too large to email. they're not technically astute enough to resize the images to be smaller, however .PDF files nicely package that same 15 MB .doc file into a 250 KB .pdf file. do any of you have any ideas of a common document format that i can recommend to them that will take care of the image size for them?
thanks!

Framed! I'm moving into a new apartment, and I have about three dozen pictures, posters, and prints that I'd like to frame. Has anybody discovered an inexpensive way to frame pictures? Is it possible to frame them yourself, by, say, getting glass cut at the hardware store? The last picture I got framed cost nearly $90, which was way too expensive.
