I am mostly a Windows guy, but I have a MacBook at home that's ended up getting more use than expected. We started using GarageBand and have a ton of photos and some videos as well. Now the smallish SSD is full. I plan to buy an external HD and move some stuff but am not that familiar with Mac file structures, so I don't know what's safe to move. [more inside]
I would like to have regular access to my OS X image library that is being kept on my Macbook using 'Photos' by the other machines within the home network, preferable without using Icloud Photo Sharing but with a NAS/Timecapsule. [more inside]

What next for Picasa? We've been using Google's free image manager since its inception and have accumulated nearly 130,000 pictures (330GB), along with associated favourites, edits, crops, etc. But Picasa isn't supported on Windows 8.1, let alone Windows 10, so what's next? [more inside]

Several (five? more?) years ago, I used to read this guy's daily lunch blog. I just had the urge to look it up again, but I have no idea where to begin finding it! Googling it isn't helping me because there are bazillions of food blogs! Typing "Canadian man food blog ponytail" into the search engine is getting me nowhere fast. [more inside]
I have a Galaxy S4 and I generally transfer pics from it to a Windows 8.1 PC via USB, connecting up the Samsung as an external hard drive, navigating down to the DCIM folder on the camera's external SD card, then dragging & dropping. Recently, all my photos more recent than Feb 2014 are not visible via Windows Explorer even though the camera itself shows that those photos are indeed stored in the same folder on the external SD card that has all the pre-Feb photos. What gives? Are they hidden form view somehow?

I need to copy a bunch of photo prints (estimated at 80) to have made into duplicate prints for multiple people. (Reason: I found my birth family, and they all want photos of me from throughout my life.) The photos are many different sizes and ratios, like 3x5, 4x6, square, 5x7, etc, and some have been cut with scissors into odd sizes/aspect ratios. [more inside]
I just got an older enlarger and want to get back into developing photos. I haven't done this since high school. Please recommend A. Beginners resources for blackroom devloping and B. Internet sites to buy cheap chemicals and paper. Thanks MeFies!
My child is 7 and when he was younger, had no trouble smiling (or looking serious) for pictures. But now he gives a horrible grimace...thing. He's been at camp all summer and they take pictures of the kids and post them on Flickr. Paging through it is painful. Cute kid, cute kid...oh hey, my kid with a frightening stretched-face chimp-grimace and slitted eyes. Every fucking picture. It looks like a sneer. [more inside]
As an aspiring artist, I've recently acquired a habit of saving to Dropbox every image I find particularly inspiring or useful as an artistic reference. This is fun and motivating, except I'm realizing that my Finder-based 'folder > subfolder' organizational structure is doing a poor job of keeping up with my needs. I'm looking for software recommendations (Mac OS X) or general tips re: sorting a frequently-accessed image collection that will eventually number into the thousands. The catch: the system needs to sync with an iPhone/iPad. [more inside]

A friend asked me (because I have been to France a couple times) if I knew the locations in a couple of snapshots taken by his father many years ago (I presume after WWII) while in France serving in the armed forces. I have no idea, having only been to Paris and environs, and thought there was a chance that a French, or French-traveling, MeFites would know. Thanks in advance to anyone who has an idea. I'd like photos that I take on my iPhone to automatically turn up on my mom's iPhone. I'd prefer to do this without setting up my iCloud account on her phone, since we don't need to share contacts, calendars, etc. Ideally the solution would be completely transparent for her, and require little or no ongoing effort from me once it's set up. Any tips on the best way to do this?
A friend of mine is moving to an all-iOS home infrastructure: - iPhones - iPad - airprint printer - Apple TV No computer. Their died and they're not buying a new one. They don't have much or any local music or video content, but do have a ton of photos (like over 16GB by some large amount). What's the best way that you can think of, without them having to buy a computer, of storing photos and sharing them amongst all of their devices and with other people. Interested in hearing about both free and paid services. Also interested in camera app recommendations, other app recommendations, and service recommendations. This question gives some interesting camera app recommendations and I'll send that to him as well. Thank you.

I just created a fan page for my photography. Naturally I'd like to add some photos but I can't seem to figure out how. If I click on photos, there's an album for the profile picture, but I can only change that photo; not add to it. There's no option to create a new album. Am I missing something? [more inside]
So I love this image, and want to use it for an art project. It's old, so I'm pretty sure it's public domain. I'll find out. But meanwhile, does anyone know where I can find a hi-res image file of this photo? I tried emailing that website, but no dice.

I'm trying to figure out what services are good for scanning a large number of family photos. We have about 60 photo albums, some with photos marked on the back with descriptions, and we want to scan them and keep them somewhat organized so we can view and print them. So I think we have somewhere 3000 photos and I want to know if these online places do what they say on the tin, if some are better than others, etc. We are in the US, California. What services do this, and how do I make sure I get the originals back, and the photos get metadata added to them if it's there?

I'm taking my Canon G11 on a sailing vacation in the Greek islands. I expect lots of blue sky, brilliant sun, and light reflecting off the water. I've never used any kind of filter before, but should I consider it this time? If so, what do I need to know to make a filter work with my camera? Is a circular polarizer the best way to go or are there other filters to consider? [more inside]
I've been tasked at school to photograph a negative emotion. I had a plan in place which broke to bits when I forgot my camera at school over the weekend. I need to shoot something tomorrow, but I'm having trouble being more creative than some crude and banal ideas for photographs of fear. I can't find inspiration online - all I come up with is crappy stock photography. Can you please point out for me good online and free resources on scene staging in films, resources on photographing emotions or good examples of emotional photos?

Looking for a video of a technology demo, which uses high-def photos to add details to video by intelligently overlaying the photo on the video and deforming the photos as the video moves. I vaguely recall it as being TED-talk-like, with shots of a (young, possibly Asian?) guy at a podium and shots of the video in action. My google-fu is failing me.
