Are efforts afoot to improve the quality of photos displayed on computer monitors? What, for example, would it take to produce a photo display on a screen that would be essentially indistinguishable from a darkroom print of the same size?
Do we need screens with many more, smaller, pixels? Do we need better software? Both?

Calling all Photoshop and photo enhancement experts, and/or people who can pick out Hebrew letters: help me digitally fiddle with these photos of old weathered Romanian-Jewish tombstones to make the inscriptions clearer, so that I can hopefully get the Hebrew writing on them translated. A year or so ago, I happened across a single php file I could drop in a website directory which then enabled the browsing of image files in said directory. I have since forgotten its name. What is this application or any simple, light-weight image directory browser?

For a design job, I need images of standard playing cards: both the faces and the backs. These will be for commercial sites (not personal use), so I need images that I can use legally (I can't credit the photographer). I prefer free, but will pay if I must. Vector is fine if it looks real. So is raster. On stock sites, I keep finding cards, but they are always shot from odd angles or are partially obscured. [more inside]

Digital fullfilment/Photography Question:
My sister's wedding had a large number of photographs taken by their friend who's a professional photographer, on his high end nikon Digital. He gave them the photos as a wedding gift, and they want people to be able to order prints on demand online.
however, they wanted to see if it were possible to tack on a small fee per photo and have the profit go to their friend.
1. What are some good print on demand sites (ofoto, etc?)
2. Do any of them allow this kind of thing?
Thanks in advance.

I've heard from 3 different people that you can't use images from the web in print media because all images on the web are 72dpi. Is this true? [more inside] [more inside]

Is there any easy to implement, close to 100% reliable, HTML, CSS, JS or whatever -hack to make IE correctly implement full alpha transparency in PNGs? It would make the life of this web developer much more happy and carefree.
