How to get the most out of my new Sony RX100?

I've been wanting to pick up photography as a hobby for a little while now and last week took the plunge with a Sony RX100 due to the great reviews, compact size and limited future potential spending (i.e., no expensive lenses to purchase). I'm wondering how to go about getting the most out of it when it seems like most photography resources are for DSLRs. I also have a specific question about an issue that I've noticed in some of my photos. [more inside]

Filter for Canon Rebel lens

I just got a Canon EOS Rebel Tsi camera and I would like get a filter for the lens as protection. Back in the olden days with a film camera I had a UV filter. Is that still the way to go? Also, any recommendations? They start at $3 on Amazon and go up to $30, quite a spread. Thanks.

Camera Lens fogging up outside

I'm tent camping and trying to get pics of the night sky. My lens just started fogging up. What do I do? My plan was to set my wireless interval timer up and go to sleep but now it looks like I'll have 400 blurry pics. It's a canon f/1.8 50 mm with a uv filter. It's 65 degrees here with 81% humidity.

What are the best photographs in the public domain?

I am decorating a new apartment and would like to put some nice pieces of art on the walls. I love some of the photographs in the Library of Congress collection and have thought about having them blown up and printed high-res. Which brings me to my question: What are the best high-res images (in the public domain) floating around the Internet? Or collections of public domain high-res images that I can turn into posters?

What do you call those pictures that move when you change your angle

You've all seen them. They're like the animated GIF's of the real world. You look at it from one perspective, it shows, say, a tiger about to leap. Then you tilt the picture a bit, and the tiger begins leaping, then the tilt it's in midair. It's not a hologram, because it doesn't convey anything 3D. Just a technique for cramming 3-5 pictures on a single piece of paper. What is it called?

How do I teach my kid to smile for pictures?

My child is 7 and when he was younger, had no trouble smiling (or looking serious) for pictures. But now he gives a horrible grimace...thing. He's been at camp all summer and they take pictures of the kids and post them on Flickr. Paging through it is painful. Cute kid, cute kid...oh hey, my kid with a frightening stretched-face chimp-grimace and slitted eyes. Every fucking picture. It looks like a sneer. [more inside]

What were itinerant street photographers called?

You take a picture of it, you buy it. How is this sort of rule enforced?

I visited a hip re-thrift/retro collectables shop in Chicago (not naming names) that had signs posted around the store claiming "you take photo = you buy" indicating that if a customer photographs an item they are obligated to purchase it. I understand how the "you break it, you bought it" policy works, but how exactly would this "no photography" policy be enforced? The items are not copyrighted as they are second-hand, and the customer has not stolen/damaged the property by photographing it, so I am assuming they couldn't get law enforcement involved. They certainly can't legally detain a customer either and I doubt they would jeopardize their safety to try. I am under the assumption that all they can do is ask the customer to leave and then deny them entry later. Any ideas? I am super curious!

Image permissions and Anonymous art

I'm handling the image permissions process for an academic text that will be published with a major university press early next year, and this is one of the images that the author really wants to include. She originally found it on Facebook when a contact of hers posted it on their wall. I predictably haven't had any luck sourcing it via a reverse image search – the only relevant link that Google returned was to this Twitter account. My previous image licensing expertise has all involved credited photographers and artists, so this intersection with the intentionally anonymous politics of Anonymous has left me scratching my head. How and where would I go to extend my search for a high-res "original", and if obtainable, how would we go about clearing it for publication? Thanks in advance for your help!

iPhone & iPad: What are the best camera/photo apps in China?

Hi there, I'm teaching my Dad in China to use his Chinese App Store account - His iPhone and iPad Mini are his MAIN cameras these days, and he loves taking photos. I'm a bit rushed as I have to leave China soon, and don't have to time to search through Chinese app reviews (I don't know Chinese well anyway). So, please can you recommend any iPhone and iPad camera and photo apps (paid or free) available on the Chinese App Store that you love. Impressive apps are good; Impressive AND easy to learn and use apps (my Dad is not very tech-skilled and doesn't like complicated instructions) are the greatest. Thanks very much for your tips!!!

The best camera is the one you have with you... unless it's an iPhone

I'm ready to up my photography game. However, I'm not interested in a DSLR because I know I'm unlikely to actually have it with me when opportunities present themselves, and at this point I'm not really technically proficient enough to justify the cost. Help me find this photography book on children's nightmares

Decades ago at my local library I found this (soft cover, I think) photography book by a guy who'd interviewed a bunch of kids about their nightmares, and photographed interpretations of them. Over my youth, I would check the book out again and again, because it terrified and fascinated me. How best to capture childhood

Singlefatherfilter: I am soon to be a divorced father to a 3 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. After the initial shock of separation a routine is thankfully starting to be enacted. As you can imagine the time I spend with them is incredibly precious to me and I would appreciate some ideas on how I can record this best. I enjoy photography but there are two issues i) My daughter specifically is at that age where she knows when a photo is been taken and will pull a face, of course her brother follows suit. ii) Whilst I can take photos of them, it is nigh on impossible to take one of all of us together. As I get older rather than rely on my memory I would love to have some beautiful shots detailing this all too short period of childhood. I have had an idea about asking a photographer to take some photos but I do not want a set of posed photos. I cannot imagine I am the first to find themselves in this situation but I would appreciate any hive-mind suggestions.
