I was a very happy Picasa user, but for reasons like the push to G+ and an attempt to minimize my general Google reliance I'm looking for another service. [more inside]
I start a darkroom class next week, and want to get my cameras up to snuff before then. They haven't been used in decades, and have been sitting in a pile in a bag on a dusty shelf in the meantime. The models are: two Minolta SRT101s (likely from the 1970s), one Mamiya MSX1000 (also likely from the 1970s), and one Franke & Heidecke Braunshweig Compur-Rapid Heidoscop-Anastigmat 1:2.8 (likely from the 1950s, though not sure). I am in the market for a new Nikon DSLR, but my home laptop/photo workflow situation is sadly out of date and not working for me. Should I consider an iPad for a main photo workflow solution, now that I could get a DSLR with wireless capability? Lots of snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Digital point-and-shoots have a very wide depth of field. I've been explained this is because of the tiny sensor size. But film P&S have very wide depth of field too, despite being "full frame." My guess is because of the lens distance to film and small aperture. Is this correct? Say, if I frankenmount a film P&S lens to a DSLR would I get the same wide depth of field of a P&S?
One year ago, I moved into my current apartment, and found that the dryer vents were clogged with lint, mold spots in the bathroom etc. I took a series of pictures on my move-in day with the camera on my iPhone 4S. Now that I'm leaving, I want to print them for my move-out inspection. However, there is currently no date stamp visible on the photos. How can I make it appear? [more inside]
My friend from Orange County (California) is a fine artist and photographer. He’s visiting New Orleans in October 2014 and would like to be part of some art shows while he’s here. [more inside]

I'm looking for recommendations for Toronto wedding photographers and rehearsal dinner venues that are fun, inviting, professional, but not overly expensive, and which might still be available for this September. [more inside]
OK, so I recently spilled beer on my Fujifilm X100S. Doh! Luckily, the camera still functions fine. Unluckily, most of the manual control dials are now sticky and hard to adjust, including the focus ring, aperture ring, battery/card door and optical/digital viewfinder switch. It's kind of a mess. Help! [more inside]
So I didn't really want to use a question on this, but earlier today I was out taking the camera on my new S5 for a spin. The results are beautiful. The problem is that at some point during the day, I managed to drop my phone about four feet onto the metal footplate of my electric wheelchair. I'm wondering if this may have killed the maniacally fast autofocus I thought I had going for me earlier in the day. [more inside]
Is it violating copyright to scan a photo from an art photography book, have it printed at a larger size, and frame and display it on your wall at home? Is it ethically problematic? Would a reputable print shop do it for you? [more inside]
My fiance found an adorable photo that we wanted to use on our (surprise) save the date cards...but the photographer has been very difficult to work with (wants his "inspirational saying" as well as his digital business card on the front of our save the date cards, etc.). My fiance is disappointed, loves the lazy, playful and sleepy two-some. Anyone have any other suggestions of photos or photographers (ideally on etsy) that take playful pictures of animals we could buy cards from?
I want to put up a wordpress site for a virtual gallery of some of my photos. I'd really like to have something that looks clean & elegant enough to send out to potential clients/magazines. ie. Not so much something that signals, "family summer trip... woohoo" but really something that signals "artist-doing-arty-things." (What I am putting on this wordpress site will be a specific photo story though, and not all of my work-- ie. this site will have a really narrow focus). I've looked at woothemes, and really didn't see anything that had the look I am striving for. (It's that classic problem: I don't know what I want, but I'll know it when I see it.") Can the hive mind point me to other places (like WooThemes) where I can find and buy beautiful wordpress themes (tight budget alert!) and/or specific themes-for-sale that would be great for an aspiring photographer with a story to tell. Thanks!
I need to take an outdoor photograph of a subject standing in front of a large, white, shiny background (a vehicle). The person and the vehicle are equally important elements in the picture. I need to take the photo when both the subject and the vehicle are available, so I have no control over the date or time or weather. Assuming I need to do this on a bight, sunny day (although I'm hoping for a slightly overcast one) where do I position them relative to the sun? [more inside]
My organization is starting a major construction project, anticipated to take about 4 years. We'll be using a Nikon D5300's interval capability to capture high-resolution, high-quality images for archival and documentation purposes. We would also like to be able to monitor the progress remotely over the internet by using a webcam or other camera (under $200) that can take good-quality still images and upload them automatically to our server (or email them) via WiFi. More specifics after the click. [more inside]
I'm trying to find the name of an artist, whose work was picked up on thisiscolossal.com, but none of the search terms I can think of are getting me anywhere. The artist made images where they would take multiple photos of a skyline, for example, from the exact same position, throughout the day. Then they would splice those images together so that it would look like the exact same skyline (it wasn't scrambled or cubicised or anything), but at the center it would be early morning, surrounded by a band of mid-morning, surrounded by a band of afternoon, then evening, then night. I have a feeling that one of the skylines was Hong Kong, or Shanghai, but I'm not positive about that. Anyone know what/whom I'm talking about?
Any idea how'd I'd recreate this artwork with my students? See inside for links and details. [more inside]
How can I learn photography? [more inside]
I have a system that records transmitted light images of samples in three colors by sequential illumination with red, green, and blue LEDs. This works for acquiring color images, but the overall color balance is off. I want to write code for color balancing these images, using data acquired from a reference target (like this). I want this to be part of an open source project, so existing tools in photoshop and similar programs aren't helpful to me. So far, I haven't found a good reference for how to do this; can someone recommend one to me? [more inside]
So. I guess they're finally going to pry XP out of my hands after all. As long as I'm updating, I'm thinking of getting a new desktop which would be used primarily for photo editing and storage. Advice? Special snowflake stuff inside. [more inside]
A family member is involved in a "48 hours in the Life of [town name]" project through a photography club and the local historical society. They would like to have a good way to receive photos during those two days, screen them for content and other requirements and simply and easily publish them and display them. [more inside]
I want to improve my digital photo organization at work, and I don't care about anything in iPhoto except Events. Unfortunately, I really appreciate being able to visually browse Events as a central database of every photo upload ever. It feels like there's no easy visual browsing in the Adobe suite, is this true? Should I just get better at using keywords in Bridge, or is there something magical in Lightroom that I don't know about? [more inside]
I'd like to improve my skills at post-processing my digital photos, generally in Aperture. I'm colorblind. [more inside]
What are some of the most important lessons you have learnt from trying to start a photography startup? Experiences will help. I want to know what tools you used, the challenges that you faced and how you overcame them. Specifically for a one or two-person run people & travel photography startup.
I'm a professional (part-time) photographer--I know next to nothing about web hosting/design/whatever. I want to switch from having a portfolio/sales website through Zenfolio (with a custom domain name hosted by Dreamhost) to having a website totally hosted by Dreamhost (with Shootproof for portfolio/sales). How can I mess around with setting up a new site (probably a Wordpress site with one-click install on Dreamhost)--I need this to be easy) without breaking my old site before I'm ready to use a new one? I'm thinking about upgrading my camera from a 10-year-old point-and-shoot to take photos of an imminent new baby (and eventual child-on-the-go), but the options are crazy-making. Camcorder, point-and-shoot, or interchangeable lenses? Video, pocketability, or picture quality? What did you find was the best option? I already have an iPhone 5s that I will use for quick snaps. We are visiting Paris in the summer and I hoping to visit to exact location of André Kertész's photo, 'Stairs Of Montmartre'. From what I can tell looking at Street View on Google Maps and exploring Flickr, there are many steps in Montmartre and I am hoping I don't need to climb all of them looking for the location of this iconic photo. Can someone give me the location who has been there?
My great-grandfather was a medical photographer for the US Navy. While cleaning out his attic, I found a large, weathered portfolio with a great many black and white photographs--some of them very boring (buildings, laboratories) some of them very shocking (medical experiments, deformed humans, both alive and-probably-dead). What should I do with them? [more inside]
There was a one-person food blog/website with gorgeous photography. At point, he went to France and came across a food that roughly translates to 'baby Jesus'. It was not a variant of a King cake. Does anyone remember this website?
I have a SONY NEX-C3 and have been trying out the "Sweep Panorama" shooting mode. For some reason, the panoramas are coming out very blue. The white balance is set to "auto" and the main other mode I use on the camera is just the "intelligent auto". Why is this happening? It happens in both 2D and 3D panorama modes.

I'm documenting quilts and have a decent set-up in place for photographing them (seen here), but now I've got to take it on the road. My 1"x3"x9' wooden crossbar isn't going to cut it as checked baggage and it's a tight fit in my compact SUV, let alone an affordable rental car when I get to my destination. However--a deal breaker--the crossbar can't be a dowel or have a round profile. With dowel-type crossbars the quilts hang and sag at the top and don't present a flat place to photograph. More details and reqs after the jump. [more inside]
What lens would be best for a new photographer for taking pictures of family (babies, kids, humans) with a Pentax K-x 12.4MP Digital SLR with 2.7 inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL? (Can you tell I just copied that from the receipt?) [more inside]

I'm looking at buying a used Pentax K5 II as my main camera rig. The most important use of this camera will be for documenting fieldwork, including photographing specimens in the field. I'd like to have a small selection of quality lenses that will cover me for most situations. I've been doing research, but there are so many options that it's hard for me to decide. Can you help me? I'm getting ready to teach a photography class for "at-risk" high schoolers. We have 8-10 students, and a budget of $1000 for supplies. So I'm trying to decide what cameras to buy for this class (and future classes), and seeking a camera that's cheap enough that we can buy 8-10 of them, but has enough manual control that it's interesting to play with. How can I get the most out of a portrait session at a department store studio? How can I best track photos of a medical issue, to see changes over time? The photos need to be taken many times a day, and easily compiled so I can see the variation between them. They should not be public, but ideally I'd like to share the photos with my doctors. The photos need to be time stamped, or the resulting archive needs to make the times and dates clear. The process should be as simple and fast, as it will be repeated 6x a day or more. Any ideas on how to make this as painless as possible? [more inside]

I am thinking of buying a nice framed photo that is recognizably DC (landmarks, cherry blossoms, etc., or something more creative) as a wedding gift. I looked at Art.com and everything was pretty generic, 'obvious' and postcard-looking. I'd love to find a photo that is a bit more unique, or even perhaps a cool framed graphic print. My budget is not awesome: I am looking to spend under $300. Any recommendations of websites/photographers/artists I should check out?

Hi all. I'm thinking of upgrading my camera from a bridge/superzoom to a proper DSLR. My budget is pretty small and it's likely to see some pretty rough use, so I probably don't want to get anything new. I think I have a pretty good idea of my requirements, but navigating the world of obsolete DSLRs is a bit complicated for me so I would appreciate your recommendations. [more inside]

This blog post has inspired me take better photos of people without spending a fortune. For a given budget (let's say camera body less than $600) should I buy a current low-end DSLR (e.g. the Canon Rebel T5i) or watch eBay for a used higher-end DSLR from a few years ago (e.g. the Nikon D7000)?> [more inside]
