Best camera for £450 - I'm fed up with grainy photos!

£450 to spend on a camera (in the UK). What 's the best I can get with it? [more inside]

What makes those West Wing photos so special?

The opening credits of the very fine show "The West Wing" include black and white still photos of cast members. There's something about them that makes you just go ... oooh! but I can't work out what it is. Does anyone out there know? Is it the contrast? The depth of field? The (over?) exposure? Have they been edited in some way to give them that quality? ... and bonus question - how could I do the same to my photos?...

Is my Canon a lemon?

I'm really disappointed with my (fairly new) Canon PowerShot A570IS digital camera. It seems to eat batteries and the images seem really noisy. Can you help me work out whether (a) I'm imagining it or (b) I've just got a dud unit or (c) if I've got the settings wrong somehow. [more inside]
