I'm purchasing my first DSLR and I'd like to take full advantage of it. I have a lot of experience with scientific imaging (I run a microscope lab) but I don't have much experience with aesthetic photography or how best to take advantage of a DSLR. I'd like your advice on books, websites, and other resources to help me get the best photos. All aspects of photography are helpful: operating the camera, composing photos, and post-processing. After the terrorist events of Sept. 11, 2001, I remember seeing a photo of Disney World being evacuated. I've since not been able to find it, but would love to find it again. [more inside]
Using a Mac, what would be one of the higher quality ways of taking a 1 minute digital video clip, converting that file so that the video is broken down into several hundred sequential still frames (high quality) and then finally printing those still frames (say each one being 3" x 3") so that I can make a flicker picture book from them? Free programs would be nice but willing to buy something if it means getting a superior result.
I have found myself in the possession of a few interesting vintage motion and still film cameras which look to be in great shape, including cases and manuals. While they look neat, I know nothing about them. I tried googling them, but couldn't find anything specific enough to help me decide what I should do with them. I'd like to know if they're worth anything and where I can look to find how much they're going for and where I might advertise them. Specifics and photos inside... [more inside]

I have a picture I want to modify in photoshop, and I'm sure there are relevant tutorials out there on the web, but I don't know how to describe what I want to do to it. Basically, I'd like to give it the illusion of depth -- make the back wall seem further away, and give it more of a sense of perspective, so you get more of a feeling of looking into a room, and less like you're looking at a flattened image of a room. Is there a term for that? [more inside]
I need the cutest seagull picture ever. [more inside]
A two part kitchenware/decorating question. Ok, the two parts have not much to do with each other. Except they are both in my house. a) how to hang large photographic prints without frames in a way that looks cool and b) I'm making a lot of yogurt these days and straining it with cheesecloth. The cheesecloth gets kind of funky after a while. What can I use instead or how can I wash it? [more inside]

I'm an amateur photographer. I recently took some quite close up pictures of a white flowered plant. I thought I'd better turn the exposure down (to -1) to avoid the flash picking out the whiteness of the flowers too much. But it didn't work out so well... [more inside]
What is this 'live photograph' called? I'm forgetting what this experience/event is called. The basic idea is actors posing in a scene - they're not moving, and I believe the 'audience' can move around and through these posed people. It is kind of like a real life diorama; I believe it was from the late 19th century; the term itself may be French; I'm making myself crazy trying to find this. [more inside]

If I'm planning on taking only simple black and white, or perhaps sepia, pictures, does the number of megapixels in a camera matter all that much? I'm not planning on being the next Ansel Adams, btw.
