What's the most cost-effective way to print about 10000 [unique] photos? I'm enjoying going through my grandparent's photo albums, and while I'm not concerned about backups (I am extremely good about backups), I am very concerned about discoverability; I think my grandchildren someday are much more likely to find and go through a stack of physical photo albums than they are a CD in a drawer. I need a photo management system that allows me to tag and search photos, but I'd rather it NOT be web-based. I don't really know what to look for. [more inside]
A few weeks ago I came across a series of online photos of the Scottish countryside. It was a borrowed laptop so I can't search the history. I'm hoping the Mefi detectives can help me. [more inside]
I'm having problems with taking photos indoors when there's a lot of movement. Prime example: weddings. Most of the shots turn out blurry. I have a basic digital camera with a setting for low light but it's at a low resolution and too grainy to print. Without using a tripod or flash what's the best way to adjust the manual settings to compensate?
I want to put up a wordpress site for a virtual gallery of some of my photos. I'd really like to have something that looks clean & elegant enough to send out to potential clients/magazines. ie. Not so much something that signals, "family summer trip... woohoo" but really something that signals "artist-doing-arty-things." (What I am putting on this wordpress site will be a specific photo story though, and not all of my work-- ie. this site will have a really narrow focus). I've looked at woothemes, and really didn't see anything that had the look I am striving for. (It's that classic problem: I don't know what I want, but I'll know it when I see it.") Can the hive mind point me to other places (like WooThemes) where I can find and buy beautiful wordpress themes (tight budget alert!) and/or specific themes-for-sale that would be great for an aspiring photographer with a story to tell. Thanks!
I'm thinking about upgrading my camera from a 10-year-old point-and-shoot to take photos of an imminent new baby (and eventual child-on-the-go), but the options are crazy-making. Camcorder, point-and-shoot, or interchangeable lenses? Video, pocketability, or picture quality? What did you find was the best option? I already have an iPhone 5s that I will use for quick snaps. How can I best track photos of a medical issue, to see changes over time? The photos need to be taken many times a day, and easily compiled so I can see the variation between them. They should not be public, but ideally I'd like to share the photos with my doctors. The photos need to be time stamped, or the resulting archive needs to make the times and dates clear. The process should be as simple and fast, as it will be repeated 6x a day or more. Any ideas on how to make this as painless as possible? [more inside]

I need to copy a bunch of photo prints (estimated at 80) to have made into duplicate prints for multiple people. (Reason: I found my birth family, and they all want photos of me from throughout my life.) The photos are many different sizes and ratios, like 3x5, 4x6, square, 5x7, etc, and some have been cut with scissors into odd sizes/aspect ratios. [more inside]
My child is 7 and when he was younger, had no trouble smiling (or looking serious) for pictures. But now he gives a horrible grimace...thing. He's been at camp all summer and they take pictures of the kids and post them on Flickr. Paging through it is painful. Cute kid, cute kid...oh hey, my kid with a frightening stretched-face chimp-grimace and slitted eyes. Every fucking picture. It looks like a sneer. [more inside]

I've sent off my family's entire photo collection for scanning and now have 13,000 photos that I would like to tag with names, themes (sports, birthdays, travel), and maybe locations. What is best practice in photo tagging these days? What software (mac) should I use? What's the best way to tag photos in bulk so that I save time? [more inside]

So basically I need to swap out all the art on several websites with photos of California that we have the rights to use in perpetuity (as well as for print). I realize there's the "buy one at a time from Getty" avenue but I have neither the time or resources for that. What I need is a boatload of pics that I can use for commercial use that are all OF California (as well as some general use pics, graphics and art). A very big collection that I can hand to an intern so they can get swapping. I think in the old days you used to just be able to buy a CD-rom of images. Can you still do that? Are there full collections with hundreds of pics? Or are there any free collections that anyone knows about that are just public use for this purpose? My budget for this is not high (no more than a couple hundred bucks) so I'm open to any options possible.

I'm taking a road trip through a really scenic area of the US and I want to go beyond boring vacation photos. My skill level is somewhere between taking snapshots at the family reunion and taking artsy photos of flowers and trees. I'm no Ansel Adams. I'm looking for cool projects to undertake, especially if they can later be incorporated into maps or timelines or video. [more inside]
Using various relatively cheap adaptors, zoom lenses and lens-reversal rings (the greatest thing that ever happened to Nikon dSLRs!), I had fun taking lots of pictures of really tiny things with my previous cameras. However, now I have a Sony NEX-5k which, for its wonderful optics, great features and excellent resolution doesn't seem to have anything that I can find to do the same type of work. Can anyone recommend a hack or accessory that will let me take more pics like those I used to (or even of smaller things!)?
What is the source of this image, of a woman with a wrench, that was used as the cover for the first Nation of Ulysses 7"? It might be from some Soviet art, it might not. Ian Sevonius says he doesn't remember where he got it, so I hope someone else will recognize it.

Husband and I were at a Farmer's Market for breakfast today, and thought we noticed an older man taking photos of children as they passed by. In the hustle and bustle of December 24th no one else seems to have caught it, and we felt kind of sick about the situation - there's no way of knowing the full details of why someone is taking pictures. But we notified a security guard, who said he'd keep an eye on it. The question is, in these kinds of scenarios is it always better to tell someone and risk making some innocent person's life miserable? We're a bit shaken up about it. [more inside]
What's a good used Nikon DSLR for a beginner? Any models out there that also do video? Looking to spend $300-$400 on the camera body, another $200-$300 on a lens and I have no idea at which of the zillion models to focus my eBay searches on. [more inside]

I'm taking my Canon G11 on a sailing vacation in the Greek islands. I expect lots of blue sky, brilliant sun, and light reflecting off the water. I've never used any kind of filter before, but should I consider it this time? If so, what do I need to know to make a filter work with my camera? Is a circular polarizer the best way to go or are there other filters to consider? [more inside]
I've been tasked at school to photograph a negative emotion. I had a plan in place which broke to bits when I forgot my camera at school over the weekend. I need to shoot something tomorrow, but I'm having trouble being more creative than some crude and banal ideas for photographs of fear. I can't find inspiration online - all I come up with is crappy stock photography. Can you please point out for me good online and free resources on scene staging in films, resources on photographing emotions or good examples of emotional photos?

My university (that I just graduated from) wants to purchase something like 20 of my photos to use for a new brochure they're making and also for the website. I have a good relationship with them and don't want to be a jerk overcharging them, and while I've sold photos to publications before at a fairly standard price of $150 for a limited use quater-page print, I think doing that for 20 photos might be much, especially since a lot of these are just photos I took during school and I haven't gone through the usual process of getting model releases for any of my fellow students. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has sold photos in "bulk" like this before and what might be a good price to charge.
