When shooting and preparing an image file for print, I've always tried to set things up so that the highlights are bright, the shadows are dark, and everything else is in the middle. At work, I've occasionally been told by my immediate superior that I'm overexposing my images, and that the highlight detail is, in their words, 'blown away'. Checking my files, the highlights in the images in question cut off around 245, sometimes as low as 240! Is there a reason why they'd want the highlights even greyer?

I feel like I understand a thing or two about light, but I can't figure out how/why this particular phenomenon happens.
This photo I took shows a shadow line cast by my bank (on the right) that seems to just hang in the air.

What kind of equipment could I purchase within a $300 budget for the backdrop and lighting? My house is naturally very dark. I use white plates and minimal props for the food. My camera is a Canon 40D. I don't have much time lately so I'll spend a little more for convenience.

I am looking for a lens for my Nikon D80 that works well in low-light conditions. Something relatively compact and not too expensive would be best.

Let's say I'm toying with the idea of making my own scanner for negative film. I've found a suitable sensor, and the rest of the mechanism looks manageable. Can I get a suitable light source that will compensate for the orange mask, at a reasonable price?

I am trying to organize a short camping trip with a friend. We would like to go somewhere in Southeastern Missouri, Southern Illinois or Southwestern Kentucky where there is little to no light pollution. Our plan is to spend some time photographing the stars, particularly the band of the Milky Way that's visible here on Earth when skies are clear.

Bad Weather Photography-Filter: I'm photographing a wedding this Saturday at a beautiful estate in the country, the main venue being an ancient Tythe Barn. Lovely, but for one problem - according to the long-range forecast, we might be expecting torrential rain during the day so all the formals may need to be relocated inside a very dark building. Please, hive-mind, help a natural light photographer with some tips on shooting groups in a semi-studio set-up?

How do you fold a photographer's light tent?
I bought a light tent as a gift for someone using ebay as a part-time living and wanting to take better photographs of items for sale.
i opened it to check it when it was delivered but now i have no idea how to get it back in the carry bag - it popped right open the first time i unwrapped it so i have nothing to compare it to
