It's looking like I'll be jobless this summer. Would it be possible to keep myself alive by taking photos of newsworthy events and selling them to news organizations?

I'm looking for examples of newspapers that use photographs particularly well -- for both quality storytelling images and strong design that showcases/utilizes news photographs well.

What sort of cameras and gear do embedded journalists and war photographers use these days? Which cameras can handle the abuse required? How do they deal with problems like power, memory, and multiple lenses? Any information would be greatly appreciated; thanks, MeFi!

I'm working on a news story for the local alt-weekly that involves a childcare center, and may be taking photos in the center. I've done child photography before, but it wasn't 'news' and we did model releases. I'm a bit nervous about parental concerns about privacy, and since I'm freelance I don't have a capital-N-news-organization to back me up, so I'm looking for advice. What's Standard Operating Practice for news photography of kids?

I'm preparing to send a portfolio of photographs to some magazines in hopes of getting some acknowledgment in photo journalism etc. Anyway, how can I prepare the portfolio or make it stronger? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm interested in hearing experiences from others that have worked with "Fixers" when setting up or actually out on a shoot. I'm usually a loner when taking pictures, but there are so many situations that having someone around that could help with literal and figurative interpretations and setting things up that I'm thinking I need the extra eyes and local knowledge.

Journalists of Metafilter – hit me with your tips for fast filing. My job (as a reporter at a daily newspaper) has gone really well and I just got a promotion!!!! Hurrah! But soon I'm going to have to do a lot more work in a lot less time. So I need to file my copy much, much faster.
