Film Camera Maintenance

I start a darkroom class next week, and want to get my cameras up to snuff before then. They haven't been used in decades, and have been sitting in a pile in a bag on a dusty shelf in the meantime. The models are: two Minolta SRT101s (likely from the 1970s), one Mamiya MSX1000 (also likely from the 1970s), and one Franke & Heidecke Braunshweig Compur-Rapid Heidoscop-Anastigmat 1:2.8 (likely from the 1950s, though not sure). Fixing My Photography Workflow So It Will Work For Me

Explain to me a point-and-shoot's wide depth of field

Digital point-and-shoots have a very wide depth of field. I've been explained this is because of the tiny sensor size. But film P&S have very wide depth of field too, despite being "full frame." My guess is because of the lens distance to film and small aperture. Is this correct? Say, if I frankenmount a film P&S lens to a DSLR would I get the same wide depth of field of a P&S?

How do I make the date stamp visible in pictures taken with an iPhone?

One year ago, I moved into my current apartment, and found that the dryer vents were clogged with lint, mold spots in the bathroom etc. I took a series of pictures on my move-in day with the camera on my iPhone 4S. Now that I'm leaving, I want to print them for my move-out inspection. However, there is currently no date stamp visible on the photos. How can I make it appear? [more inside]

How do I clean my sticky camera?

OK, so I recently spilled beer on my Fujifilm X100S. Doh! Luckily, the camera still functions fine. Unluckily, most of the manual control dials are now sticky and hard to adjust, including the focus ring, aperture ring, battery/card door and optical/digital viewfinder switch. It's kind of a mess. Samsung Galaxy S5...a goner?

So I didn't really want to use a question on this, but earlier today I was out taking the camera on my new S5 for a spin. The results are beautiful. The problem is that at some point during the day, I managed to drop my phone about four feet onto the metal footplate of my electric wheelchair. I'm wondering if this may have killed the maniacally fast autofocus I thought I had going for me earlier in the day. [more inside]

Photography tips wanted

I need to take an outdoor photograph of a subject standing in front of a large, white, shiny background (a vehicle). The person and the vehicle are equally important elements in the picture. I need to take the photo when both the subject and the vehicle are available, so I have no control over the date or time or weather. Assuming I need to do this on a bight, sunny day (although I'm hoping for a slightly overcast one) where do I position them relative to the sun? [more inside]

Recommendations for inexpensive still-image, auto-uploading webcam

My organization is starting a major construction project, anticipated to take about 4 years. We'll be using a Nikon D5300's interval capability to capture high-resolution, high-quality images for archival and documentation purposes. We would also like to be able to monitor the progress remotely over the internet by using a webcam or other camera (under $200) that can take good-quality still images and upload them automatically to our server (or email them) via WiFi. More specifics after the click. [more inside]

Camera options with baby on the way

I'm thinking about upgrading my camera from a 10-year-old point-and-shoot to take photos of an imminent new baby (and eventual child-on-the-go), but the options are crazy-making. Help me find a good older model DSLR

Hi all. I'm thinking of upgrading my camera from a bridge/superzoom to a proper DSLR. My budget is pretty small and it's likely to see some pretty rough use, so I probably don't want to get anything new. I think I have a pretty good idea of my requirements, but navigating the world of obsolete DSLRs is a bit complicated for me so I would appreciate your recommendations. [more inside]

I donĀ“t always shoot digital, but when I do...

In my personal view of photography and life in general, the "convenience" that, for me, is the only advantage that digital cameras have over film (specially if we talk about medium format film), was never something I cared about. However I may have to start caring about it, at least part of the time. The thing is, I have no idea of what camera to get, so I would like some advice. [more inside]

Sony RX100 or Panasonic Lumix LX7?

After being disappointed in yet another set of vacation photos because I didn't want to lug my dSLR around and ended up relying on my phone's mediocre camera, I've decided it's time for a high-end point-and-shoot. I've spent a couple weeks researching and have narrowed it down to two: the Sony RX100 and the Panasonic Lumix LX7. But I'm having a hard time deciding between the two! Do you have experience with either/both that can help me decide? I don't mind spending the extra money on the RX100 if it's worth it, but is it? [more inside]

How to get the most out of my new Sony RX100?

I've been wanting to pick up photography as a hobby for a little while now and last week took the plunge with a Sony RX100 due to the great reviews, compact size and limited future potential spending (i.e., no expensive lenses to purchase). I'm wondering how to go about getting the most out of it when it seems like most photography resources are for DSLRs. iPhone & iPad: What are the best camera/photo apps in China?

Hi there, I'm teaching my Dad in China to use his Chinese App Store account - His iPhone and iPad Mini are his MAIN cameras these days, and he loves taking photos. I'm a bit rushed as I have to leave China soon, and don't have to time to search through Chinese app reviews (I don't know Chinese well anyway). So, please can you recommend any iPhone and iPad camera and photo apps (paid or free) available on the Chinese App Store that you love. Impressive apps are good; Impressive AND easy to learn and use apps (my Dad is not very tech-skilled and doesn't like complicated instructions) are the greatest. Thanks very much for your tips!!!

Where do I get universal 4x5 ground glass?

I've got this image of a piece of ground glass mounted in a standard 4x5 film holder. I've googled all sorts of things to try and describe what this is, but I cannot find where I can buy this. I've seen tons of pieces of ground glass that are for specific cameras, but that's not what I want. I want a piece of ground glass in (and sold with) a frame that makes it the exact size and thickness for putting into any sort of large format camera. Basically, what that picture shows. What is this and where do I buy it? Thanks!
