My dad has many thousands of photos in 35mm slide and print form (the output of 40 years as a photography hobbyist). He's looking for an archival-quality photo scanner that can handle both formats, as well as provide some degree of bulk-load automation. What should he get?

Let's say I'm toying with the idea of making my own scanner for negative film. I've found a suitable sensor, and the rest of the mechanism looks manageable. Can I get a suitable light source that will compensate for the orange mask, at a reasonable price?

I love
this photograph (I don't remember where I found it, unfortunately). How would I go about taking similar photos with a 35mm and/or digital camera? What kind of lense/lighting/setup would have been used for something like this? Is there a name for this kind of effect? Is there a good way to duplicate this effect in digital post-processing?

I have negatives from ten rolls of 35mm color film (about 240 pictures total) that I'd like to get scanned. Has anyone had any experience with companies that do this sort of scanning? Any to recommend or avoid?

I want to get started with alternative photography. I've been using my 350D and a normal film 35mm SLR for a while now and I feel creatively stale. I want to delve into the world of alternative photography. Help me MeFi.

Is there a particularly good mail-in photo processing company that you can recommend? Or how about a good place in Philly?

Can I scan 35mm film negatives with my Canon LiDE 30? Other flatbed scanners come with an adapter that allows for this, but this scanner didn't. Is there an off the shelf widget that will work?

Pentax K1000, with a jammed shutter release button. I hardly ever use film any more, but have a soft spot for the 35mm format and this camera in particular. It's been jammed for at least ten years. Repair, replace, or junk and move on?
