Photography-satisficing-filter: I would like to take family snapshots approximately as nice as this. Can it be done with my higher-end point-and-shoot (currently taking shots like this)? And if not, what's the minimum I'd need to spend on equipment to get there? [more inside]

Trying to identify two things. The first is an image. I think it was a drawing, though it might've been a manipulated photograph. Innumerable warplanes (bombers) crowd the sky, flying (I think) to the left. Some people on the ground are also evident, if I recall correctly. The second is a rather famous work by a prominent artist whose name escapes me. He cast his body, I think in bronze, and welded tremendously broad wings resembling an airplane's onto the sides. The title has something to do with angels.

How would I go about painting on top of color photographs with acrylic paints? I would like to branch out from pure photography and into multimedia; however I have no knowledge of painting process. I am currently taking an acrylics painting course at a commnity college, and while I am beginning to get the basics of applying paint to a canvas, I am at a loss as to how I might prepare a photograph surface for painting. A related question: how about painting on smooth plastic lamps?

Digital cameras do tons of photo manipulation in-camera, before you ever upload it. Knowing this, I'd like to configure my camera to do as much in-camera as possible, so that I don't have to spend as much time photoshopping (contrast, sharpening, etc.) afterward. Any recommendations on settings I could use, or resources that would help me determine what settings make for the "best" photos? (I have a Nikon CP4500, if it helps.)
