I have an iPhone 6s Plus, which has become pretty much my only camera for the last several months. I actually like it a lot and have been learning to get some photos out of it that I really like. However, I'd like to have more control over the camera settings than I get from the default app. Is there an app that does this well? [more inside]
A picture from 1807 in Germany shows what could be a dead guy against a brick wall underneath iron rings and some kind of wreath or animal tail. What is the explanation for this? [more inside]

Madame Naberius and I want to put together a wedding album. We really like the look and feel of the Shutterfly photo book. The issue is that, in addition to photos, we also want to include things that aren't photographs as such, like our invitation, the menu from our reception dinner, etc. [more inside]
Three or four years ago I saw a photograph in an actual newspaper of a group of wetnurses and babies in an Italian orphanage. There were some rows of buxom young women in uniform, each one seated with a breast out feeding a baby. The young women all wore a kind of nurses cap and oddly, every single one of them had dark curly hair. There was an odd juxtaposition in the picture between the uniformity of the group - and they were pretty smart - and the intimacy of the action. The date must have been 1940's or 30's. Now I've tried googling this picture and while the searches have taken me to some unexpectedly alarming places, I've not found it. The closest I've got, in feeling and structure, is number 3 of 4 here; but this isn't it. So, consulting the diverse and extensive knowledges accumulated here, does anyone know the photograph and where I might see it again? [more inside]
I've been working on a research paper and I've been trying to find the full, high-resolution version of a 1936 photograph (that preferably extends beyond what is shown here). It made the front page news in London and shows the British Mandate riot police quelling Palestinian demonstrations.
So my friend just completed post for her movie and she asked me to do a simple poster for it. The movie is about how the growth of the feminist movement in Northern Ireland under British rule. I am giving her many options, some of which are specific to the time and place and some of which are more about women in general. Thoughts? [more inside]

Looking for a photograph I once saw: rural winter scene, nearly monochrome — the farm fences and whatnot were black wood — but with one spot of colour, something red in the hands of someone walking in the centre of the scene. [more inside]
I was given some photographs of old relatives that were found in a box in my great-grandfather's house after he passed away. All but one photo is someone I can identify. I have no information on that one photo, which is of an old woman standing on a path in front of a farmhouse. I'd like to at least get an idea of the era so I can begin narrowing down the identify of the woman. [more inside]
Lets say I found an amazing macro photograph of a flower or of an old building and I wanted to do a very detailed graphite drawing of the photo. Am I able to claim this drawing as 'my' artwork? Can I use it in a painting to sell? Does the photographer need to be credited? Do I need permission in the first place to use the photo as reference or should I just avoid all the potential hassle and take my own darned photographs for reference from which to draw?
Someone mentioned to my mother that a photo in this week's (2/22) edition of The Week magazine is likely me. The article is about people using computers and smartphones on airplanes and is called, I think, 'Please turn off your electronic devices' (p. 11). [more inside]

Two Asian restaurants near my house - I think the owners are Cambodian, but I'm not quite sure - recently hung in their dining rooms huge, glossy photographs of a very young girl, maybe 5 or 6 years old, dressed in elaborate royal regalia and wearing heavy makeup. It's very striking (and a wee bit creepy.) Who is this girl?
Let's play find-a-photo! Last year, I saw a link to an old-timey black and white photograph of 3 figures, perhaps on a hill or some other outdoor place. One man was wearing a monkey mask, another (I believe) a wolf mask, and a woman had an enormous black veil that obscured her face. They were all in fancy dress. I believe it was an old photo, not a new photo made to appear that way. It was sort of creepy. [more inside]

At univerisity in the 90s there was a book in the library which featured (as far as I recall) a man in a darkened room with electricity being passed through him sentried on either side by men in white coats (not an electric chair). The caption was "Odyssey of Pain". I have a feeling it was from a LIFE Magazine collection -- it suited their style -- but I was hoping someone might be able to confirm I've not been imagining it all these years.

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle applied to photography: I can see you moving, but never standing still
I do video. I obsessively read lens reviews on photography sites that tend to criticize certain lenses for being soft. Does the lower resolution of the video output (1920x1080) lessen the issues of softer focus that is so troubling on higher resolution stills (e.g., sixteen megapixels and above) [more inside]
What's the story behind this odd photo? It appears to be from about the early 1960s. Men and women are gathered at the end of a table with various interesting expressions on their faces. A bare pair of mans legs lies on the table, but the remainder of the body (if any) is out of frame.

I found this framed vintage image of a lightly dressed woman at an antique store in southern Colorado. Disassembling the frame, I noticed that the image seems to have been printed on paperboard, and it may be one portion trimmed from a larger poster. It's a monochrome image with limited use of color -- the yellow of her garments, the pink of her cheeks, the light blue cast to the background. TinEye was not helpful. I am hoping some MeFite who recognizes the woman or the image can tell me who she is or where the picture comes from. Failing that, some general guesses on the picture’s vintage or provenance would be welcome.
On this bong gift set I can tell the top picture is Che but I can't figure out (with tineye's and google's help) if the bottom man is smiling Che or someone else ... any ideas?
