I was given some photographs of old relatives that were found in a box in my great-grandfather's house after he passed away. All but one photo is someone I can identify. I have no information on that one photo, which is of an old woman standing on a path in front of a farmhouse. I'd like to at least get an idea of the era so I can begin narrowing down the identify of the woman.

Lets say I found an amazing macro photograph of a flower or of an old building and I wanted to do a very detailed graphite drawing of the photo. Am I able to claim this drawing as 'my' artwork? Can I use it in a painting to sell? Does the photographer need to be credited? Do I need permission in the first place to use the photo as reference or should I just avoid all the potential hassle and take my own darned photographs for reference from which to draw?

Someone mentioned to my mother that a photo in this week's (2/22) edition of The Week magazine is likely me. The article is about people using computers and smartphones on airplanes and is called, I think, 'Please turn off your electronic devices' (p. 11).

Two Asian restaurants near my house - I think the owners are Cambodian, but I'm not quite sure - recently hung in their dining rooms huge, glossy photographs of a very young girl, maybe 5 or 6 years old, dressed in elaborate royal regalia and wearing heavy makeup. It's very striking (and a wee bit creepy.) Who is this girl?

Let's play find-a-photo! Last year, I saw a link to an old-timey black and white photograph of 3 figures, perhaps on a hill or some other outdoor place. One man was wearing a monkey mask, another (I believe) a wolf mask, and a woman had an enormous black veil that obscured her face. They were all in fancy dress. I believe it was an old photo, not a new photo made to appear that way. It was sort of creepy.

At univerisity in the 90s there was a book in the library which featured (as far as I recall) a man in a darkened room with electricity being passed through him sentried on either side by men in white coats (not an electric chair). The caption was "Odyssey of Pain". I have a feeling it was from a LIFE Magazine collection -- it suited their style -- but I was hoping someone might be able to confirm I've not been imagining it all these years.

I do video. I obsessively read lens reviews on photography sites that tend to criticize certain lenses for being soft. Does the lower resolution of the video output (1920x1080) lessen the issues of softer focus that is so troubling on higher resolution stills (e.g., sixteen megapixels and above)

What's the story behind
this odd photo? It appears to be from about the early 1960s. Men and women are gathered at the end of a table with various interesting expressions on their faces. A bare pair of mans legs lies on the table, but the remainder of the body (if any) is out of frame.

I found
this framed vintage image of a lightly dressed woman at an antique store in southern Colorado. Disassembling the frame, I noticed that the image seems to have been printed on paperboard, and it may be one portion trimmed from a larger poster. It's a monochrome image with limited use of color -- the yellow of her garments, the pink of her cheeks, the light blue cast to the background. TinEye was not helpful. I am hoping some MeFite who recognizes the woman or the image can tell me who she is or where the picture comes from. Failing that, some general guesses on the picture’s vintage or provenance would be welcome.

Can you identify this picture from my vague recollection of it? In 1988 or '89 I bought a small poster (no larger than 3' x 2') featuring a black-and-white photograph of a woman lying on a bed, smoking a cigarette.

Does anyone know anything about
this photograph? I came across it on a stranger's Tumblr site and it's completely unattributed, and no amount of Googling has turned up even a clue as to where it's from. Looks like it's out of a book (page number in the bottom right), but beyond that, I got nothin'. I'm totally intrigued by it. (Note: I've already emailed the blog owner via their Tumblr site, so please don't email them again; I don't want to harass them...) Thanks!

this photo at a yard sale today. The woman who sold it to me had no idea who the people in it are. She said she'd had the photo since 1960. It's clearly a lot older than that. What, if anything, can you tell me about it?
