Photography tips, please: I'm photographing some flat but textured textile art, and want to capture the texture in as much detail as possible. And I don't so much know what I'm doing.

Years ago I had one of those "greatest album covers" books, and there was one (a jazz LP, I believe) that featured a gorgeous black and white photo of a woman floating in a lake or river, wearing a white dress, with only her face above water (the photo was taken benearth the surface, so her face wasn't visible). There was no writing of any kind on the cover. Anyway, I've been trying to find out which album that is for years now (the book is long gone), to no avail. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

So I gave my Grandma my old digital camera. I deleted everything off the disk but it seems there must have still been some either on the disk or on the camera's memory. My mom and dad just downloaded the pictures my Grandma took along with the ones that weren't deleted. Those happen to have been some naughty ones I would never in a million years have wanted my family to see.

I am in the process of scanning about 1,500 photos from my life (thank you Epson auto feeder) and am now tasked with organizing them into a useful digital library. The order is almost completely random, and while I can organize them by subject into folders, what I really need is a program that will let me drag and drop thumbnails into the order that I want them and then rename the files so that they remain in that order. Does anyone know of such a software program or have any other suggestions for doing this? And I'm on a Mac (Leopard), but have Parallels if need be. Thanks!

I just got a new webcam and the picture quality on MSN now rocks. However, when I take normal pics with dorgem, the pictures come out looking like something a VGA camera would take, rather than a clear crisp 5mp webcam. Would like suggestions for Windows webcam programs that will allow me to just take photos.
Note: I don't want a webcam program with motion detection, photo booth, etc. Just a simple one-click take-this-photo program. Many thanks in advance!

There's a photograph of a Persian gold finial resting on a highly patterned cloth on p. 56 of the August 2008 National Geographic (directions to find it online inside). The finial is in tack-sharp focus with significant depth of field while the entire cloth is pleasantly blurred. Shenanigans? I would love to know how this photo was taken.

NYC Wedding Filter: The future Ms. Smatatoes thinks numbered tables for our wedding would be too boring, but the current Mr. Smatatoes doesn't want cutesy names (ie, "Tribeca", "Red Hook"), either. So our compromise is getting nice photographs of numbers from around the city- ie, a shot of the front of a 1 train for table #1, and so on. Here's the question: what are some good, creative places to get a cool shot of the numbers 1-20 around NYC?
