A headshot was recently taken of me by a friend, in front of an orange brick wall with a repeating interlocking Greek meander pattern (here
is an example). I love the photo: finally, I look capable and presentable. But... does that pattern look too much like the Nazi cross? Should I try to get a new background? [more inside]

New York Magazine had a short piece
the other day about some street photographers in NYC who post some jaw-dropping stuff on Instagram. I've really been enjoying following their feeds --- so now I'm wondering, what about the other great cities of the world? NYC can't have a monopoly on cool cityscapes. Can y'all hook me up with some other great Instagram accounts to follow? From Paris to Lagos to Phnom Penh, I'm interested. [more inside]

I'd love to see more work by this photographer. I've tried what I think are likely google searches and have found nothing - maybe I'm using the wrong search terms, but if anyone knows or has suggestions, I'd be grateful! Photo here.

My phone camera had a bad day and somehow saved 3 pictures I took as the same image. ie when I click on the 3 different files, it displays the same image. But the thumbnails
show the correct image for each of the 3 files. Somehow the jpg files must have got the thumbnails and bigger images mixed up. I've tried different viewers (on my Window computer) and get the same results. I believe jpgs can store several image versions - Is there some technique or software that might let me see and extract all the images within the jgp file? (with the hope to rescue the biggest version of my intended picture for each file). Thanks

Our family photos are a mess. We have 4ish years of mostly unedited, unsorted photos in iPhoto. I'd like to get a handle on what's there, sort and/or edit, possibly print some books (our son was born in 2011) and create a system that helps us avoid this disaster going forward. More details inside. [more inside]

I've had this little home decor project idea
floating around in my head for ages and I need a specific kind of picture frame to pull it off. One of those family collage frame type dealies that everybody's grandma has in the den. But they seem to have dropped out of fashion and I haven't been able to find one anywhere over the course of numerous googlings for the past year and a half. [more inside]

I saw a picture earlier this year, probably on Reddit and/or Imgur, of two young kids on a carnival ride having the time of their lives. Right behind them were two slightly older kids or teens looking sullen and glued to their phones. The general layout was something like this.
Does anyone remember seeing it, or can you help me find it? [more inside]

I have a bunch of 35mm negatives from the 90s and 00s I'd like to get scanned, and I'm wondering what services people recommend. ScanCafe was recommended in a previous post
, which sounds like it would work for me, but I'm wondering if other folks have better / cheaper recommendations. In particular the color correction seems unnecessary to me since I can color correct the few images I'll probably want to post myself in Lightroom.

OK, so I recently spilled beer on my Fujifilm X100S. Doh! Luckily, the camera still functions fine. Unluckily, most of the manual control dials are now sticky and hard to adjust, including the focus ring, aperture ring, battery/card door and optical/digital viewfinder switch. It's kind of a mess. We have our windows 7 computer organized by user, and the folder system is a mess.
I want to be able to browse photos, and videos, by one simple criteria, date taken. For example, want to see every picture and video on my PC That was taken on July 19, 2013. I don't want it to be tricked by the save date, the edit date, what folder it's in, or which camera was used. Only the date I snapped the shot.
Fantastic would be some kind of timeline that you can very quickly scroll thru and it shows you some kind of date display where you're at.

It was a photo of a sculpture created from collected rocks, that formed a dragon's head. The head was not upright, more as if you looked at a sleeping dragon from directly above it. The photo was seen about a two years on Facebook, in one of those photo blogs, though I can't remember any specific or general details about the blog.
Any ideas on this photo of sculpture made from collected rocks that formed a dragon's head?

I'm looking for a way to sort through my mountain of photos while I'm on the go, using an iPhone. (I shoot in RAW, so I guess it would need to involve exporting small JPGs to a Dropbox folder or an app.) I don't need to rate the photos, only flag/unflag/set as rejected (like Lightroom). The catch is that I'd like the changes I make on the go to somehow sync back to Lightroom on my computer. Is there an app for this that comes to mind, or any ideas you guys could suggest? Thanks!

I am thinking of buying a nice framed photo that is recognizably DC (landmarks, cherry blossoms, etc., or something more creative) as a wedding gift. I looked at Art.com and everything was pretty generic, 'obvious' and postcard-looking. I'd love to find a photo that is a bit more unique, or even perhaps a cool framed graphic print. My budget is not awesome: I am looking to spend under $300. Any recommendations of websites/photographers/artists I should check out?

I may eventually do bulk orders if I decide to sell so if you have any recommendations that would be different for bulk orders, I am game for those suggestions as well. Vistaprint was around $20-25 after all was said and done.
Thanks, and enjoy your weekend.

I found this
photo on a blog a few months ago.
I have been looking for a larger higher quality version and or the name of the photographer to find out if I can purchase a print.
This is what I know.
It is from West Side Story
It appears a number of times on the internet, all small pixel sizes
The photographer is NOT Ernest Hass or Phil Stern (the two photographers who were present taking photos at some stage on the production of Westside Story)
Thanks, this one baffles me. When I have time I will go to the Motion Picture Academy Library (I live in Los Angeles) and see if I can find out anything more, but until then I thought I would let Mefi rip on it!)

What is the best color printer for the following use case: photos up to 5x7 of patients pre/post operation. The images will not be used for diagnosis so there is no requirement for ultra-high-quality, but the images must still be decent. Must be Mac compatible. We cannot use a professional lab as the images will be confidential.
Not sure what kind of spend is required here but I'd be surprised if there wasn't something suitable under $500.

Is there a term for the type of portrait that contains two angles of the same person's face in the same photo? I'm thinking of this style
(Will Ferrell). Another example here
These were really popular in the 70s and 80s.
I want to get one of the style portraits taken but I don't even know how to describe it, or how to search for it. Does anyone know a name for this style, or even a way to explain it?
Also, have you ever seen it being offered these days, and if so, where?
I have seen these previous Askme's (1
) but they don't really help. Also my google-fu is useless except for that Will Ferrell portrait.

I have a very old photo of a family member, Edward Mackintosh, who died during the First World War in the Quintinshill Rail Disaster
. As far as I know it is the one remaining photo of him. Sadly it is in very poor condition. It is in a locket (photo
) and has adhered to the glass.
We're fairly certain that it isn't glued, but it has been worn my my Mum for many years and has suffered dampness and perfume etc, which has caused it to stick. I'd really like to take a good quality (or best possible) scan of the photo to give to my Grandfather. Is there any way to achieve this? Ideally I'd remove the photo from the glass so I could take it to a local photo shop for scanning. But if that's the wrong approach I'm happy to take advice!

My fiancée and I want to have our engagement photos done. Rather than pose in front of scenic backdrops, we'd like to have photos taken in front of a green screen, then have vistas from video games that are special to us inserted behind us. For instance, in the finished product, we're in front of the castle from Super Mario 64
or a Paris nightclub from Sly Cooper
. Is this something that professional photographers can/will do? I know there's green screen photo places, but will they add the game backgrounds that we provide? Are there licensing/copyright issues in play that will get in the way of this?

What do you call those images where each "pixel" is made up of a tiny photo
? Usually the subphotos are thematically related to the main image.
Extra special bonus if you can point me to software (how perfect would a GIMP plugin be? very perfect) that will generate one using a pile of images (cheating by adding tints to individual images is totally fine for these purposes). [more inside]
