Is it worth the effort to get Verizon to come out and update the external phone wiring, specifically, I don't have "the gray box" (NID) [more inside]

I am strongly considering switching to T-mobile and a big draw for me is wifi hotspot option. Specifically, I am looking to get a Hotspot enabled phone and use it through my home Wifi connection for better reception and/or, I might spend the additional $10/month and get the unlimited hotspot calling option. I am not talking about T-Mobile@home. [more inside]

What's the best wireless phone service for the NYC area?
I'm as fed up with Verizon as the next guy, but my limited experience with an iPhone in Manhattan left me with dropped/missed calls and very intermittent access to maps, etc. (unless already cached).
Putting aside fun features that usually work, and imagining your life depended on receiving or making a phone call, which network would you choose?*
*Please speak from experience with a carrier and nevermind the silly games they play (e.g., crippling bluetooth, etc.); I simply need a service that doesn't miss or drop calls.

I need to have a phone jack put in for AT&T service in Chicago (Andersonville), because the previous tenants converted all the phone jacks to cable outlets. Can anyone recommend the services of a handyman, or even suggest who I would have to look up to get it done more quickly than AT&T will? [more inside]

I'd love to know of a phone number I could call for voice directions, based on my cell phone's GPS; ideally, a 1-900-like service, charged per-call. Better still... free! [more inside]

Any Canadian Mefites use Vonage (http://www.vonage.ca) for their
phone service? How's the reception? Uptime? Any details you can
share? Any nightmares? Details specific to Toronto or Rogers Hi-Speed
appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a good internet/phone/cell provider? Last year, my place of employment signed an all-inclusive contract with Norvergence for a T1 line, local & long distance phone and cell phone service. Service and support has been less than satisfactory and today, it has become apparent that they are going out of business. We are hoping to find a similar service with a reliable company. Any recommendations and experiences are appreciated. [more inside]

I am particularly fortunate to have two free services to choose from [1, 2] to send ringers and stuff to my phone without going through the manufacturer or service provider.
Are there any other services that provide similar solutions for other providers, or perhaps software to do such? Surely there have to be some clever geeks out there with other brands of phones/service.
