Does any cell phone network engineer perhaps know why you can't hear your own voice when speaking on a cell?

US resident here who has traveled extensively to Europe...pre 1990. Haven't been back since and will likely need to travel to Europe at least 2 times for > 1 week each trip in the coming year. Might be as many as four trips. Back in the day, one's only contact with home was via landline/long distance calling cards etc.. Now there are cellphones, computers, wifi, skype, and the need for on the go data. To be clear, I need to be as nearly plugged into the "grid" as I am while at home. What are modern day US-to-Europe travelling hacks, particularly in regards to staying plugged in?

Prepaid smartphone SIMs? My wife and I are visiting NYC for 10 days, need to be connected, and don't want to use our European roaming plans (been there, paid through the nose.) Can you recommend SIM cards for our unlocked Android phones that will work for a few phone calls and a bunch of data?

I want a simple, dumb cell phone. Calling and texting are essential, number directory is semi-essential, clock + date are okay -
everything else I'd rather not have.

Where's my mobile phone brush? Cell phone, yo -- how 'come there don't seem to be any such apps, even on the so-called smartphones. I know the Palm One units have available apps and I would imagine so would the Windows Mobile ones, but what about java-based phones? Am I missing some huge repository of apps or something?

My girlfriend recently damaged her Cingular phone and she needs a replacement. She wants a cheap one, so she's considering buying a pay-as-you-go phone and swapping out SIM cards so she can use her old service. My question is, will this work?

European disposable mobile phones: My parents, who are American, are going to Edinburgh, London & Paris later this week. They've asked me what I know about disposable/rentable phones since their phones won't work over there. I know nothing. So now I'm asking all of you: What do you know about good deals on disposable/rentable phones in the UK & France? (I believe they're looking to use the phones for a period of 7-10 days, and if it makes things simpler I think they are willing to do without during the French portion of the trip if necessary)

I'm buying my first cell phone now that my commute is changing from 5 minutes to 60. I want to send instant messages with the option of using an actual phone, I want it to be as cheap as possible, and I'd like to be with Cingular. The hiptop has arched my brow since it came out, but I'm not sure I'd like being on T-Mobile's network. Any thoughts?

I got a new cell phone, and my old one was deactivated and handed back to me. Is there any way to make an orphaned, numberless Nokia useful again (for when Sprint's coverage fades, like it has all this weekend) without signing a contract for a monthly fee? TracFone makes you buy a new phone, which is the opposite of what I'm looking for. Prepaid long distance cards seem to be only for land lines. Am I missing the magic google search term?
