9-11 Technology Filter: I have never been able to even get signal on my Blackberry 8200 (GSM) within 10 seconds of liftoff, so how were cell phone calls completed from hijacked planes on 9-11? Specifically, given the prevailing handset, carrier, and tower technologies present in the Boston, NY, and DC metro and intervening areas at the time, and given the flight paths and altitudes of the hijacked planes, how were passengers able to complete cellphone calls to loved ones? I have a US cell phone (LG Muziq, Sprint is the provider). I would REALLY like to be able to read Japanese web pages on it, but whenever I surf to a page with Japanese text it just shows up as garbage. I've installed Opera Mini on my phone, but that didn't help, even though the demo on their website does show Japanese characters. Is there any way to get this to work? I don't need to be able to type in Japanese, or send Japanese text messages. I just want to be able to read Japanese web pages. If I can't do this on the phone directly, then maybe there's another website I could visit that would convert the Japanese text to images?

I'm going on a 10+ day bike ride and want to be able to use my fantastic Nokia 6110 (with built in GPS) and my ipod Nano as long as possible. I bought a cheap solar panel charger on ebay and have found that it's useless. What are the best solutions? So far under consideration are better solar, a spare battery for the phone and emergency chargers that can be recharged when I can get to mains power. The 'name brand' solar chargers around, the solio and the freeloader also have negative reviews. The Freeplay 12V looks cool, but has also got some pretty poor reviews (but at least it looks like it works). What would you recommend?
How can I archive my phone's text messages for future reference, without paying a lot in money or effort?
How can I make an archive of my SMS messages? In this era of network-accessible, searchable, archived, free, multi-gigabyte email storage, I'm a little miffed that my SMS storage is limited to arbitrary limit of 50 message on my phone. Lots of important things come in via SMS, and I hate how they just disappear. I get Twitters from friends, nice notes from my girlfriend, voice mail transcriptions from CallWave, business information via GOOG-411's text service... and so on. I'd like for the solution to cost as little as possible. I don't have an unlimited txt plan (I get a few hundred per month) so simply forwarding every SMS I receive and CCing every SMS I send to an email address isn't a very appealing solution as it really raises my SMS costs and takes effort. I am hoping folks here can impart their wisdom on how to play with the latest mobile tech for an extended period of time. For instance, let's say I wanted to play with the T-Mobile Shadow for awhile but don't have an account with T-Mobile. Is my only option to pay $300.00 for the phone and sign a two-year agreement? Or are there other ways to play? The thought of several contracts with several providers scares me away from it...

Is there any way a cellphone company might lower my outrageous overage charges that are completely my fault? I discovered with horror that I stupidly went over the allotted "whenever" minutes last month, to the tune of an extra 300 bucks. This isn't a moral thing: I'm not blaming the company. I just slipped up, the 300 bucks is a lot to me right now, and I'm wondering if there's a way to convince them to take pity on me. [more inside]
Paranoia filter: is there a way to see if one's phone line is tapped, without calling the phone company and asking them to come look? I live in an apartment building in Brooklyn and have access to the phone cables outside the building.
