Tell me about landlines these days

When we moved into our home in 2012, we got bundled internet and telephone service, but we didn't realize that meant the telephone came through cable modem, instead of being routed through the hardwired phone lines in the house. No biggie - get wireless phones with a "master" base. Now that those phones have all died, we're re-evaluating our phone service. Details inside. [more inside]

A phone for the home

I moved to a house that gets terrible cell phone service. I'd like to have a land line phone, especially to have in case of emergencies and power outages. I'm reading about "land lines" that use wireless cell technology, things like Vonage that use the internet, and I am confused. [more inside]

Hello? Any landlines out there?

Post-Sandy, we are thinking it would be good to have an old-fashioned landline for future outages. We currently have FIOS phone, cable and internet. When we lost power, after the second day we had no home phone I guess because the battery backup died. So is there such a thing as old-fashioned landline service anymore? And who can I call to get this service from? In central NJ?

Masking my landline's outgoing number, with another phone number.

I just moved to a new part of the state, and had a landline telephone installed through my local telco. I asked if they could port my old number (123)-xxx-xxxx to my new landline, and they said my old number was not in the same "Rate Center". I confirmed that they were telling the truth based on this AskMeFi post. I have the option to enable call forwarding from my old number to my new landline, which takes care of incoming calls. Now I am turning to you, the hivemind, to find out how to dial out from my new landline, and have my old number, (123)-xxx-xxxx, show up on other peoples' caller ID. I've done some searching and found a bunch of convoluted VoIP setups that would achieve this solution for me, but I'm not that technical, and I don't want to have to dial a million numbers just to make a single phone call from my land-line. Does the hive mind have any simple solutions?

How to replace my landline for 4 cell users?

Require a replacement for my landline and the 30 bucks a month that it costs me as I now have 4 cell phones in the house. Require a telephone device that (a) rings on more than one handset (b) has access to cheap long distance (c) good quality and dependable. I realize Google Voice does a lot of this, but I'm in Canada and we don't have Google Voice available here yet or any indication of how soon it could be arriving. Is all of this possible without a landline? What services can you recommend to get me closer to my goal?

Connect Landline to PC?

Is there a way I can connect a 4 line RCA 4 Line Executive Series phone to my PC to automatically log incoming and outgoing calls to measure phone productivity? Also if it came with an autodialer that would be great. The phone has a data port so I'm thinking I can connect to it some how. Thanks for the help!

good landline phone

Old school question here, folks, but can anyone recommend a good landline (not cordless) phone for an office setting? I had an AT&T 955, but it's gone buggy (buzzy, actually) on me. I like the aesthetics of it otherwise, but if anyone has any ideas...

decent portable phones

I need a decent portable, landline, telephone. I have two 900mhz phones. They're both terrible and full of static. We rarely go more than 100 feet or so from the base, don't need an answering machine or anything fancy. Needs to have caller ID. Do you love yours? Please tell me what it is.

I'm looking for a product that performs the same function as the "page" button on my cordless landline.

I'm looking for a product that performs the same function as the "page" button on my cordless landline. Press a button on the base, and the lost phone starts beeping until you find it. Ideally this is something small enough to attach to objects like keychains, remote controls, wallets, small digicams (RFID?). Anybody ever heard of anything like this?
