How do I do a full "Subsidy" and "Carrier" unlock for a GSM/LTE Verizon Droid 4? [more inside]
I was given a Droid X2 that I'd like to re-use as a music player, etc. The phone has been...reset? and is at the 'call Verizon' screen. I have zero experience installing operating systems on Android phones. Is there a way to install an alternate OS on this phone that would let me use it? All the walkthroughs I've seen assume you can install software on the phone. I have PCs and Macs available to use to help install what I need.
There is a game called Dungeon Scroll for Android and Apple devices. You get some times and spell a bunch of words and the score of the words kill various creatures. It's pretty low-tech. I absolutely LOVE this game and have had it for years. I'm trying to find something similar that's maybe a little more sophisticated...saves my game progress as I go, leveling up means something, idk. [more inside]
I have a Samsung I200. I like it well enough, but it doesn't have much on-board storage (4 gigs). I recently put a 16GB card into it to increase storage. However, I'm still running into problems with having enough space. [more inside]
I love Monument Valley, and would like to find more games like it. I'm seeking ones that are beautiful, minimalist, simple, atmospheric and tranquil -- the less time pressure and freneticism, the better. Puzzle-like aspects are great, arty/indie is great, good use of sound would be great. I'd especially love recommendations for games featuring female protagonists and ones rooted in a non-competitive worldview --- but those aspects aren't critical, just nice-to-have. Help me waste my time with beauty and joy :)
I love having a moon phase widget on my android phone. Three days ago I noticed the one I had, had disappeared. I then downloaded a few others to try. Paid apps even! None of them change on the desktop(?) of the phone, indicating where the moon is in its cycle. Is this because I have mobile data turned off to save battery power? Or is there another reason? I also downloaded the app Sun and Moon but is it anywhere to be found on my phone except in My Apps to uninstall? Is it heck. What's going on?
Are there any newer phones that use the Android operating system (Jelly bean or later) that also are both available unlocked and that have a physical QUERTY keyboard? Shopping for a blind person who is trying to find easier ways to send text messages, but doesn't want a full-time plan as he is out of the country half the year.
Posting for a friend: "For a research study, I would love suggestions of Android mobile games that: 1) are very engaging and fun 2) you pay for 3) don't have ads and don't push in-app purchases 4) perhaps require both hands or require that you keep your eyes on the screen (this is not necessary but would be an added plus) 5) would be easy for people without a lot of experience playing mobile games to learn and enjoy."
I've just made the switch from my old iPhone to a Nexus 5, and the only little thing bothering me is that the default music app doesn't display album or track lenths when you go to choose something to play. Should I install a new music player, and if so, which one? [more inside]
Some weeks ago, I changed my phone's password while half asleep and haven't been able to remember it since. I've since gotten a new phone, but I really want to get the pictures and videos that were on there. Is this possible? [more inside]
I recently got a Moto X, running the latest KitKat OS. I set up a few basic apps, turned off the sound and vibration to everything, but still every tweet reply and email I get causes the phone to do a short vibrate jolt on notification. I also get the haptic keyboard vibration feedback when typing on it. I've googled, turned every sound/vibrate option off in Settings and still can't get this phone to be quiet and vibrate-free on both counts. What am I doing wrong here?
I have an iphone. Today I will be getting a MotoX. I don't really know a lot about smartphones in general or Android in general (or hell, even ios really) except that I assume there are going to be a few hiccups in the transition. Help me avoid those hiccups! [more inside]

For the last day, my phone has been targeted by the "have two random cellphones call each other simultaneously and see what happens when someone picks up" prank, similar to what is available through websites I won't advertise here. (Google, "have two phones call each other prank." Yes, I looked up the 4 I could find, and registered on all of them to have my number blocked....it's still happening.) [more inside]
An elderly parent is suffering from an illness which impairs lucidity and judgment, and make inappropriate use of the phone (running Android Taking the phone away is a last resort. I often cook with a recipe open on my phone. If my hands are messy, I don't want to touch my phone. It seems like there should be an app or a built-in way to use voice control to page up or down. I am happy to use Tasker, Autovoice, or to install a specific app to do this, but I can't figure it out. Any suggestions? My phone is a Nexus 4 running the latest version of stock Android.
I wish for my smartphone to have more utility. What do you use yours for? [more inside]
I've had my phone (a Samsung Galaxy S Blaze) for about a year and a half, and it is no longer under warranty. Recently, it has developed two problems relating to aspects of the hardware. I need to determine if I (a person with little to no experience with fixing electronics) can fix these problems inexpensively, or if I should just bite the bullet and buy a new phone. (I'm a student, so buying a new phone after less than two years is not something that makes my wallet happy.) [more inside]
I have a relatively-new iPhone 5 that I'm thinking of selling or trading in. It all seems a bit confusing, though, so please explain to me how this works. [more inside]
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus 4 for whenever we travel abroad, and just getting a SIM card in the airport. I'd like to use both voice and data when I'm away. Will this work, or is there a better way? [more inside]
I'm looking for a sub-$200 Android phone to act as an alarm clock. The four needs: OLED display, can be horizontally docked, the power and volume buttons are on the "top" of the phone when horizontally docked, and it needs to be able to run Android 4.2.2+ (even if I have to root it). It looks like a used HTC One S will work, but they're still pretty expensive, and I'd like to explore cheaper options. Thoughts? [more inside]
My contract with Verizon Wireless is almost up, which means I can get a new smartphone without spending an arm and a leg on it. I'm looking for recommendations for Android phones that are at least decently powered, have good to great battery life, accept microSD for expansion, and can be hacked into without exploding. My top contenders are a Razr Maxx HD or a Galaxy S3/4, but none seem completely satisfactory so I'm open to other suggestions. [more inside]

I have had a reasonably happy relationship with my T-Mobile G2 (aka HTC Desire Z) these past two years, but my contract is up, and I have long coveted the iPhone, mostly based on its picture taking and video chatting capabilities. Should I just get one and take advantage of T-Mobile's new pricing? Or should I jump to a new carrier? An attempt to make this less open-ended is inside. [more inside]

On my last smartphone, I could push a button, say "Find pizza" and the phone would bring up a map showing all the local pizzerias. Or "Find 300 Commonwealth Avenue" and it would show me a map with my destination and where I was. Now when I say "Find pizza" my phone instead does an internet search for pizza. If it is a more specific command, often the internet search will lead me to an option to find the selected item using Google Maps instead. But it's still a little annoying that I have to choose things with my finger instead of my voice. [more inside]
[I am old/paranoid/a special snowflake filter] I am a Mac person. I have mostly avoided google products in my life, and am not eager for google to know everything about me. SO has a frequent long, boring train ride. He also has a brand new Android phone, like I do. What are some two-player games that two people could play together over an android phone to help ride out the train monotony?
I am relatively new to the smart phone world. But what I already learned is that incredibly many apps are for free. I wonder how that is possible. During the last month I have spent some time myself developing a financial app for Android - my preferred smart phone. The app of course could be useful not only for me but also for others. So I put it into the Google Play Store. Since I made some effort with bringing the thing to life I am not ready to give it away for free but expect getting a reasonable price paid. What I wonder is are people in general expecting apps to be free anyway? Are there other models how to finance the development of smart phone apps?

I have a HTC Wildfire S, which I like a lot and does everything I want except with one big caveat: the inbuilt memory on the phone is pitiful. The inability to move some apps to the SD card is proving to be a pain. I have reached the stage, after only a handful of not-preinstalled apps, of having to constantly uninstall/reinstall apps as I need them. So, can someone suggest to me another phone that might suit me better? [more inside]
