Recently I got a dog. He's doing great, I'm doing great, it's been nearly 3 months since I got him from the shelter. Problem: He's meeting my brother and his kids, in a few weeks (family reunion weekend), and my brother has a strong fear, maybe even a phobia of dogs. What can I do to put him at ease, navigate the situation and help everyone get through this unscathed? [more inside]

A few weeks ago, an oncoming tanker truck ran me off the road on a curvy two-lane highway. I (barely) managed to avoid a collision or rollover but did clip a mailbox. What do I do about a persistent phobia and why is it getting worse? Reading this question (how scary is blood) I had an instant reaction of starting to hyperventilate a bit, though I got it under control quickly (also stopped reading). As I get older and the more I'm aware of it, this reaction gets stronger. Explanation involves a friend who was a cutter so be aware if this is a trigger for you. [more inside]

Ice falling from tall buildings filter. Help me lay to rest a question that has plagued my wife. We live in Chicago, with lots of tall buildings. Ice falls off of the buildings from time to time and about once a year, some poor bastard gets mushed. Where in terms of physics and I suppose statistics would be the safest place to walk down the sidewalk: as close to the building as possible? The middle of the sidewalk? The far edge? Does it depend on building height?

For several months now, I have had a bizarre phobia of opening my mailbox. I only open it once every few weeks, grab what's inside, and throw it in a pile in my apartment. Then after I pay the bills, I don't really look at anything else. It's like I am afraid of what's inside, some collection bill (I've never had a credit problem) or something. I can't put my finger on it... [more inside]
Please advise my girlfriend about overcoming her anxiety over times when I’m not there (I’m bipolar, she has panic disorder and OCD).
I have bipolar disorder and although I have been stable for more than a year I have had several manic episodes in the past (when I was very ill and she was unable to contact me) and my girlfriend worries I may have another when she’s not with me at night. We would like for me to be able to stay at home for a few days every now and then but this is currently not possible, as she gets too anxious and distressed. How can we make this happen? I really need some help here: how can I go home at night? [more inside]

My wife is afraid of spiders. We just moved to Portland, Oregon, where the spider population seems to be higher than that even of slackers. Two part question. I'm afraid of the dark. When I go to sleep I either leave the TV going, or the door open and a nearby light on. If I don't do this then I lie in the dark and watch shadows move, I'm on edge, and I lay awake for hours. This would be fine if I was 8, but I'm nearly 30. Am I the only adult in the world with this phobia? I'm planning to travel soon and will be staying in places that don't have a regular electricity supply, so I'll need to be comfortable in the dark.
