Fix my life, move back to the city, or travel around the world?

I live a sad, lonely, purposeless existence in a city that I'm not crazy about. Should I try to fix my life here, move back to the city that I loved, or quit my job and travel around the world for a year in the hopes of finding a mission in life? [more inside]

Individual free choice but collective predictability?

Can someone explain why despite the fact that every one of these incidents occurs at a unique time and place, each involves a complex history of events and personal decisions leading to its very unlikely outcome, that the death toll on the roads year-on-year is so predictable? Food for the wandering mind

In a while I will be going on a round the world trip to do a bit of soul searching (and to have a lot of fun of course). I'm looking for books on the subject of travel, not the pragmatically oriented genre, but philosophically and spiritually inclined ones. I'd like to read true stories about open-minded people backpacking around the globe and learning something about themselves and the world. I'd like to taste their joys as well as their disappointments, their insights as well as their confusion experienced during long-term world-wide travel. [more inside]
