I'm a grad student. I like the subject(s) I'm studying, I like research, and I know I'm capable of doing the work... except when I sit down to actually do it, I choke. I know I'm not the only one suffering from both imposter syndrome and perfectionism - how do you manage to get your brain to stop spinning its wheels and get to work? [more inside]

I've taken early retirement after teaching 23 years in special education. With a high (3.7) undergrad GPA, a masters in math education, and decent GRE scores, what are my chances of getting into PhD program at the ripe old age of 61? Has anyone heard of some one my age being accepted to a PhD program?

Alternately, what are the major mistakes/pitfalls new students make when writing such a letter? Answers need not be Psych specific.

How do I allocate time to different parts of my life? I'm a second-year PhD student, but I think this is a universal problem. When I am deciding what to do at a given moment I might have a small number of major long-term projects (right now: two research projects and a course I'm taking), a bunch of minor tasks, and planning for fun stuff. I feel like I really should be devoting most of my time to the major projects, but I sometimes despair at the thought that the little stuff will never get done. [more inside]
