I'm moving home to Toronto after 2 years in Egypt, and I need to take my cat. I know about the immunizations and paperwork, but I am not in control of booking my flight and need to know what to do if I end up with a long layover or a non-pet friendly airline. How does moving half-way around the world work with a cat, exactly? [more inside]

Who has used a soft-sided dog crate for a large dog? Will it provide secure confinement for short periods?
We are moving from NJ to the west coast. Our elderly dog is too frail to travel by air, so we will drive a 6-day road trip.
For the road trip, I need a portable crate that will stow in our car trunk. We need the crate to set up in motel rooms. I want dog to have his "den". We do not plan to leave him alone, but there could be situations where he has to be kept confined for his safety. [more inside]

My wife and I are moving across country from California to Massachusetts. And we want to bring our animal posse with us. Moving the dogs is not too bad (they are both small enough to fly), but we also have a number of cats, including some that aren't keen on big life changes. How do we get them across the country without them killing us or vice versa?

PetFilter: I am about to travel over 1000 miles with two cats in one car. The cats get along together. Both are healthy, about two years old, and hate car trips (usually because it takes them to the vet). We are only going to stop once for the night. I need your advice, opinions, and experiences to make this move easier for all involved.

Bringing Pets in Airplane Cabin: I know that each airline has its limits on the dimensions of the under-the-seat carrier and combined weight, but how strict are they? Do airlines actually measure your carrier and weigh the pet plus carrier? Or just eyeball it? I'm wondering particularly about Northwest and American Airlines. Any horror stories or warnings appreciated.

Business trip to York UK from US East Coast. Anyone ever take their dog? I always roll with my pooch on business trips, but mine's 90 lbs and this is a - what? - 7 hour flight. [more inside]

How much money should we allow for cat veterinary emergencies? This is for our cat sitter or vet to spend to fix up our cat, without contacting us, if we're incommunicado. We're putting together a letter of consent for the cat sitter and vet. [more inside]

GettingaDogFilter: How much time does it take for an adopted dog need to bond with its owner? I am in a long distance relationship and generally leave town once a month to visit the SO, should I hold off on getting a dog until that situation is rectified and I am not travelling nearly as much? Traveling with cat: this winter, I need to go from NYC to Boston for the weekend every few weeks. I just got a cat and while someone can watch him, I would rather take him with me so he won't be alone. But neither Amtrak nor Greyhound accept pets. I don't know how to drive. What should I do? In a few weeks I am going to be driving a moving truck cross country with 2 cats. I will need to find a hotel 2 different nights along the way. However, given the unpredictable nature of that kind of drive in a moving van, I am loathe to reserve places ahead of time. If there is any sort of delay or fortunate expedience the reservation could easily be missed.
Searching the internet it seems that the pet policy is left up to individual hotels - even in the same chain. Does anyone know of any chains that allow small pets at all of their hotels or at least a resource that might compile a list of such places?
