I'm looking for information about working with a personal stylist or personal shopper, especially as a plus-size woman. Could I? Should I? I just moved to San Francisco (well, OK, Marin county) and discovered that I need to learn how to dress properly. I have no fashion sense or style*.

It looks like I need a third party to hold my hand and teach me everything about clothing myself, starting right at the very beginning.

I need someone who can:

explain fashion, style, and clothes to me like the 6 year old I clearly am

teach me everything about my size and shape and color and what works with it

help me create work and casual wardrobes, made from items already in my closet, and new things they'll help me shop for

give me a bunch of simple algorithms I can plug into my future shopping and getting-dressed routines when I'm doing it alone.

Is this what a personal shopper/stylist can do for me? Where can I find one? What should I expect? What does it cost? Have you ever worked with one? How did it go for you?

Background:

I’m a petite US size 16/18 (which sometimes means plus-size, and sometimes doesn't). I'm almost 30 and only just learned that navy is a neutral.

In the past month, I've spent a bunch of money (at Banana Republic, Gap, Kohl's, and Ross) trying to build a good wardrobe, but I don't think I've done it right. I get dressed in the morning, think I've put together something good, then I get into the city and realize I actually look terrible.

I started to follow a bunch of fashion/fatshion blogs (e.g. Corporette, The Curvy Fashionista, Fat Shopaholic, GabiFresh) but I don’t think they’re really helping me; I rarely see anything I would wear/can afford.

* This is the sort of thing that can happen when you grow up in a family where everyone is plus sized and - thanks, fat-phobic society! - deeply ashamed of it.

petite jeans

My daughter spilled permanent glue all over my last pair of jeans that fit -- they were from Lands' End and have long since been discontinued. Please help me find new jeans that fit! Here's what I am looking for:
(1) I wear a size 6 or 8. The jeans must come in petite or "short" length, as I have very short legs. I prefer straight leg to flare or boot-cut.
(2) I don't want high-waisted mommy jeans, but I also don't want the really low-slung ones all the kids are wearing (I'm 50). I have some Old Navy "Diva" jeans that fit OK, but I really don't like the low rise -- even with a belt, I feel as though they'll fall down, and some of my tops aren't long enough to cover the gap. Is there such a thing as "regular" rise anymore?
(3) I don't want ultra-skinny jeans, but I also don't want baggy.
(4) I don't want to spend a fortune. I realize that I might need to be spend $75, but even that sounds outrageous to me for "just jeans."
The closest I've come is a pair of J.Jill "authentic fit slim-leg" petite jeans, which are pretty good but have a bit more stretch in them than I'm used to. Any other ideas?

I got fat really fast. I'm short. Where to find clothes that fit, stat?

Best stores for short and plus sized gals? Comfortable yet young professional clothes, especially. Snowflakey details inside. I've recently gained A LOT of weight (thanks to medication I think) and I really need new clothes, but I don't know how to shop for this new shape. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but want to look good for work and going out with friends, and be comfortable as well (I hate itchy, tight, scratchy stuff. Most tights for instance drive me crazy.) My biggest problem is my stomach area, where I feel like I've expanded the most. It's really weird -- that's never been a 'problem spot'. Pants can be SO uncomfortable due to the waistband digging in, or other weird midsection constriction issues. I don't know if this weight gain is temporary or not, or if it's still going up, so while I don't want to really invest in a new wardrobe, the lack of appropriate clothing is stressing me out now. i prefer petite length so i dont have to hem pants and such.

I am 5'3", early 30s, and probably hovering around 200 lbs at this point :( I used to be ~ a size 12/14 before the new med, and my recent pants purchase at talbots, 18W petite, is too uncomfortable due to the waistband issue.

thoughts on where to go? Talbots is good, but expensive, so i'd like to hear of other places. I'm out of the retail league I'm used to!

Thank you in advance.

Help me find a warm coat for my small self.

Please help me find a WARM winter coat for a VERY petite woman. I am 4'11" and 90 lbs. I usually wear a size 00, XS is too big and sometimes Petite XS is too big. My shoulders are very narrow, and my arms are pretty short.

I am looking for a seriously warm coat that will last me awhile. I will mostly be going for walks in the coat, sometimes just standing outside; nothing terribly physical. Temps where I live may be anywhere from -10 to teens.

What I've done in the past is wait until after christmas to buy a down coat from Abercrombie+Fitch on sale. Stores like A+F that cater to teenagers fit me great and the XS is small enough for me. However, the coats are poor quality and fall apart after a couple years, plus they aren't terribly warm.

Brands such as the North Face are generally too big as well, and any regular XS coat will presumably too big in the shoulders and the arms.

I thought I lucked out with this coat from Eddie Bauer in petite XS, but when it arrived I was so disappointed to find that it was far too big in both the shoulders and the arms, even with a sweater underneath. So I ordered this coat from LL Bean and same issue!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally I'd like a waterproof down coat like the ones linked but at this point I really can't be picky. Normally I would just buy a kid's coat but I find the quality to be lacking. I need something quite warm. Any suggestions are greatly, greatly appreciated.

My breasts are large for my frame, how can I downplay them and avoid back pain?

My breasts are disproportionately large for my frame (34E/F, 5'2", upper-normal BMI). Because of this, my posture is terrible and my style has been decidedly cramped. Short of getting a breast reduction, how can I dress better, improve my posture, and keep my back from hurting all the time? The problem is that even great, well-made, well-fitted, expensive bras leave my breasts looking really, well, prominent. My breasts kind of swallow my whole torso, to be honest - I have an extremely short (though defined) waist, and to put it crudely, my body basically goes straight from tits to ass. Since this is anonymous, what the hell - I go from 42-30-42 within a vertical span of less than 1 foot. I know I should make the most of my curves, but they look so dramatic on my short body that I usually feel like I look either immodest or fat, with nothing in between. Is this a self-esteem issue, a physical issue, or a clothing issue? And more importantly, what can I do about it?

The back pain is my biggest concern. As I get older (turning 29 this year), I am experiencing more and more muscle pain and cramping in my mid-upper back and shoulders from having terrible posture, which I believe is a result of slouching to hide my breasts. I find that even when I'm relaxing at home with no one but my partner (and I am confident that he loves my body), I still feel strangely uncomfortable and almost ashamed to have good posture because it makes my breasts stick out so crazy far from my body. I've been wearing restrictive sports bras for the last year or so because they minimize my bust and make me look thinner - it was almost disturbing to me how much thinner people thought I was once I started doing this, I got constant commentary about losing weight even while I was actually gaining - but I am sick and tired of the squishing/uniboob effect and I'm ready to start wearing real, nice bras again.

For the back pain, the most effective treatment so far has been trigger point self-massage on my upper back, but every day it all tightens back up again and I can't seem to make any lasting progress. For my clothing, I dress very simply in black long-sleeve v-neck tees and dark jeans, but it would be nice to spice it up a little without looking like 50% of my body weight is comprised of boobs. I've tried wrap dresses, and one of them worked great but mostly they still make me feel really conspicuous and I don't wear dresses very often (maybe I should?). As far as self-esteem goes, I am much more accepting of my body than I used to be, but I still beat myself up about being a size 10/12 when I would look better at a size 8, stupid stuff like that. I'm pretty quiet, self-conscious, and modest as a general rule, but other than the boob issue I wouldn't say that my body image was a big problem or taking up a ton of space in my head. I have definitely thought about breast reduction surgery, but not very seriously because I can't afford it at all as a broke-ass student with no health insurance.

If it helps, I'm an hourglass/cello body type, I'm muscular and in reasonably good shape, and I walk around with a heavy backpack all the time because I walk to school every day. I don't plan on joining a gym, but I do try to walk at least 3 miles every day, including some decent elevation changes. I am open to exercises and stretches that I can do at home or outdoors.

Any advice on how to dress myself in more flattering clothes, treat or train my body, or mentally reframe my figure would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always, hive mind!

I don't want a fabulous coat-parachute, thanks!

Fellow short/petite women, please tell me your favorite winter coat brands, styles, and sources! I need a new classic, black wool winter coat, and I mostly do the sales/consignment/discount/online shop thing. I've decided that I need a new classic winter coat, the kind that will last for years. I want it in black wool or a wool-angora or wool-cashmere blend. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it rains and sometimes freezes, but never snows, so it doesn't have to be ultra-thick.

My problem is that many coats just SWIM on me. I went to the Burlington Coat Factory the other day and tried on coats on a whim, and they had some lovely coats, but all were HUGE, beyond what a tailor could easily alter. The "petite" selection was minimal and mostly parkas. Boo.

I am 5'2" and a size 4-6 and can usually get away with regular non-petite sizes in dresses and skirts. (Pants are another story!) I like to wear a size larger in coats so that I can layer underneath and move my arms easily, so I'd probably move up to a 6-8. For work, I wear dresses and skirts, so I want a coat that goes about to mid-calf for wearing with boots.

I really want to avoid trudging around Macy's and Nordstrom's and trying on every coat they have and then try to find a particular coat online or at a discount. So I'm asking the hive mind for suggestions so I can narrow down my target before I start. What brands fit you best? What styles were the most flattering? What brick-and-mortar (SF Bay Area, please) or online stores are your favorite? What other winter coat hacks do you have?

Champagne tastes, Bud Light Budget

Help me find fashion similar to Boden for Women, but less expensive. Or tell me to suck it up and just buy Boden.

Examples of what I love and what I'm looking for inside... I'm finding that I am repeatedly drawn to the look I can most easily describe by directing you to the Boden catalogue, though that definitely isn't the only brand I like (to be honest, haven't purchased anything from them yet). I love the casual yet flattering look, especially of the skirts and dresses. Am a huge fan of the boot/dark tight/skirt and dress look. I'm short (5'1") with narrow shoulders, a bit of a tummy, relatively slim calves, and a large chest (D cup). I find wrap style tops, and scoop necks most flattering. Need to be careful about cleavage for work. I'm 41, so want something that doesn't age me but that doesn't look ridiculously young, either.

At a quick glance, I love dresses like this and this. I like this top and this.

From REI, I like this. (Much more in my price range, but my sister owns two of them already so felt weird buying it).

Basically, I'm looking for some easy-wearing pieces, that work for my relatively casual workplace, that are comfortable, that ideally can mix and match, and don't cause $120 each. Conversely, if you have tried Boden and think nothing compares and it's worth every single cent, let me know that, too. Thanks!

Dressing the petite hourglass?

Help a petite hourglass play dress up: What are your guidelines, links, favorite pieces and prohibitions for making the most out of a small but curvy silhouette? Over the last year and a half, I've lost a few pounds and (thanks to ukdanae's advice) gained some great bras. My frame is petite, and most S T-shirts fit, but the girls are not, which means that most other small-size clothing pulls hard at the bustline. Add a short waist and short legs to the mix.

I've been reading Trinny and Susannah's "What Not to Wear" and "What You Wear Can Change Your Life," and have eliminated unflattering pieces from my closet. That leaves me looking for casual going out clothing and cute-but-functional Ts and shorts (yes, yes, I know, but I can't do farm chores in pants in July); "going out" means can wear to do errands and go to the park with the kids, not formalwear). I like my curves, other than the one at my abdomen, and want to show them off a little.

Clothing stores don't get any more exciting than Kohl's in my neck of the woods, and I am pressed for time and often shopping with little kids in tow. My chic best friend is hours away. There are a few good thrift and consignment shops around, so I am looking for guidelines for which pieces to even consider trying on. Do you have rules of thumb, like "No high-neck shirts"? Which fabrics should I seek or avoid? Any labels that are curve-friendly? Do you keep a list of what to look for?

Do you have favorite websites for guidance on dressing this particular body shape?

Do you have favorite combinations that work for you?

Specific pieces--how short should shorts go? How can I manage low-rise pants so they don't feel like they're going to slide off my hips? Wrap dresses swamp me, and end up cut too low, because they seem built for a longer body frame; suggestions? I love the corset look, and could be persuaded to try it, but give me some examples of how it can fit in outside of a Ren faire. Belts over shirts--how? Specific wrap shirts that you like?

In short, as it were: Generous breasts, petite frame, hourglass curves, short but OK legs, great arms. Help me put it all together to dress to best advantage. My closet and I thank you.

Keep me from becoming a cube-sicle

It's 90 degrees outside yet I am shivering in my cube. Can you give me some ideas about what to wear that will allow me to transition between these two climates? First, I'm female, mid-30s, in a Big Technical Corporation with a business casual dress code. Right now I'm wearing a turquoise button-down shirt and a pair of black slacks with flat shoes. This is pretty typical for me and I'm not looking to dress up or be much more feminine.

I am petite. Like a size 2 at Ann Taylor Petite. Most cardigan sweaters look like knitted garbage bags on me. I have a short torso, so I would prefer something that didn't end at the waist. I have been specifically told NOT to wear suit jackets here, as they intimidate the engineers or somesuch.

I cannot use a space heater and obviously I have no control over the thermostat.

Bonus: Why do all corporations I've ever worked for keep it so damned cold inside during the summer? Wouldn't they save a ton of money by not cranking the A/C so high?

Leggings: I promise not to wear them as pants!

Short people of Metafilter, where do you buy leggings? Hi, so I'm 5'1'' and so far the leggings I've tried end right around my toes. This is fine for wearing them with boots but it's not flying for flats. Since it doesn't seem like the packages ever say anything about the length of the leggings, I’m turning to you for help.

Do you, other short folks, have tried and true leggings that actually end around the ankle? Brands? Styles?

I'm in San Francisco so I have access to most national stores, as well as the internet. SF specific suggestions welcomed as well!

garter belt with short straps

Can you recommend a garter belt for a petite lady? I like wearing a garter belt with plastic clips and stockings (like this lady), but I have a different problem. I'm 5'1" and the straps on the new belt I bought at VS are too long. I don't wear very shorter skirts, but when I sit, I don't want the tops of the stockings to show. Can you recommend a garter belt with shorter straps? Preferably black lace and under $40. Thanks, women of MeFi!

Cheap Ts for the short-waisted gal?

Petite and/or short-waisted women of AskMe: at what stores, brick-and-mortar OR online, have you bought inexpensive, casual knit tops that'd fit someone with a short torso? I'm looking to supplement my summer wardrobe with some casual everyday knit shirts: baby Ts, polos, tanks, etc. I'm short-to-average height, with a fairly (although not freakishly) short waist. ~5 years ago I had no problem finding shirts that fit, but it seems as though nowadays every single store I try stocks exclusively looong-bodied tops with waistlines that hit me right at the hip.

I could try going with specifically petite-sized tops, but the ones I've seen are all either too dowdy and boxy-looking (I like a more fitted style, and generally shop juniors' sections for everyday wear) or too expensive (I refuse to pay more than ~$10 apiece for the kind of throwaway jersey tee that regularly retails at Target for $5.99). I can't help feeling as though this is a question of finding The One Store that happens to carry a line of relatively short-skewing tops (at which point I will buy one of everything and be done with it), but I totally do not have the time to canvas every shirt-rack in the area until the right T turns up.

I'm on the middle East Coast of the US, with access to pretty much every mall and strip-mall retailer you can think of. So far I've tried Kohl's, Walmart, Boscov's, American Apparel, and Target without luck. Can anyone suggest some likely places to try next?

Where do petite women find clothes that don't look like your grandma? I've been out of work for a couple months, but I'm supposed to be getting an offer tomorrow. In my previous life, I worked with a load of engineers and could more or less come to work in a barrel. I dressed slightly better than that, but generally didn't bother because I didn't need to do so. This is the same line of work (Project Management) but in a different industry (Interactive Marketing vs Product Development), and I think I need to dress better.

1. Petite selection SUCKS. Ann Taylor is generally too . . . it's not old, exactly, but it's too staid for my taste. I do okay at Loft sometimes.

2. I really need SHIRTS. I'm busty. In the Old Life, I just wore threadless tshirts, sweaters, and sometimes something slightly nicer, but really, finding blouses that are not covered in effing beads and sequins (a particular problem this season) that don't look better than tees and are hella pricey is an issue. Advice? Help? Because I'm very very short-waisted with boobage, I can get away with some misses rather than petite shirts, but sleeves get to be an issue. I hate tucking shirts in.

3. I'm not a twin-set kind of person. I like cardigans over tanks or camisoles fine, but not matchy. I feel like a tiny Hitler in anything too structured because I have kind of big shoulders to go with the boobs.

I don't need suits, although I have two nice suits that I can split up and use the jackets as blazers and the skirts as skirts; I plan to do that more in this new job. I could be talked into Ross or TJ Maxx, I suppose, but at my size, I find it's a lot of work to find *anything* there and I don't usually have the patience for it. I have no problem finding trousers and jeans, dresses are less of a problem, although selection on that count would be nice.

I'm in Atlanta. I am closest to Northpoint Mall, but can get to anything within the ATL area, including the outlets. I'm looking for store names or even places I can order online and send stuff back without a lot of hassle. I don't want to spend a fortune, and while I will get things tailored, big bonus points for just finally being able to SHOP.

Workout tops for short girls?

Are there brands that make workout tops suitable for short girls? I'm 5'1" but reasonably curvy. All the fitted workout tops I own are too long and therefore too tight on the hips, so they ride up on my rather short waist and require constant adjustment. Buying a size up doesn't solve the problem - then they're just too baggy everywhere else. Can anyone recommend a brand - online or otherwise - that sizes tops for petites? (Lots of places seem to offer pants with shorter inseams, but not tops.)

This would be for the usual gym stuff, but also needs to be suitable for Pilates and yoga, where t-shirt+sports bra+headstand simply will not do. Thanks in advance.

Low-rise tights?

I'm looking for low-rise tights cut to fit a petite, short-waisted woman. I'm 5'1, 125 pounds, size 6/8, short-waisted, and I carry my chub in the mid-section. Small-sized tights are way too tight in the middle, but anything larger and the waist sits nearly at my chest because I'm so short.

I've googled "low-rise tights" and found some at Target, but I'm wondering if there's any other particular brand that's cut that way but not necessarily advertised as such.

I've tried:

GAP Small, GAP Medium: both way too tight in the middle. Like, "pain box from Dune"-level tight. Somehow, the medium is tighter than the small (?!) and, of course, its waist is practically at the bust.

Old Navy Small: see above

Urban Outfitters: I have some I bought last year that fit decently, but they were specifically marked "low-rise" and looking at the website now, I don't see any that say that any more.

Anyone else with a similar build found tights that fit?

How fancy can a cardigan get?

I am looking for formal, professional-looking cardigans for work. I'm a petite female who is basically trying to avoid wearing a blazer. I'm a bank teller, and suit jackets seem to be a bit more common on females than at my previous job. I do not want to wear a jacket for many reasons, though if you can magically find a blazer that will actually fit and flatter a girl my size I'll be amazed and corrected.

I know a cardigan is never going to be as formal as a jacket. However, they work a lot better with my wardrobe, I can roll up the sleeves if needed so they're not dragging through stacks of cash, and I just like them a lot better. I'm trying to find cardigans, or maybe pullovers, that are quite formal and workplace appropriate. People do wear sweaters where I work, so this isn't some crazy harebrained scheme that's going to get me fired.

Complications: I'm an XS or petite small in US sizes. I'm about five feet tall and a hundred pounds. I easily fit into children's and junior sizes, and clothing lines for full-grown normal-sized ladies sometimes won't fit right unless I can find an extra-small. There are certain stores where the sizes run small (ex: Anthropologie, Bebe) and I don't have problems, and there are certain stores where the sizes run large (ex: Wal-Mart) and I can't fit into anything.

My work wardrobe style is generally something like this; a tailored dress that hits on the waist, opaque tights, ballet flats, and a cardigan. I need help with the last component. Online options, suggestions for brands that carry work wear in smaller sizes, and store recommendations in Chicago proper are all welcomed.

Teeny Tiny Scallops!

What do I do with these tiny scallops? I purchased some "petite sea scallops" from the store yesterday. They are quite small -- maybe around 1/2" in diamter and 1/2" thick. Sort of like oversized pencil erasers.

Anyway, I've been searching online for a good recipe to use these in for hours, but nothing is really pinging me as "wow, I need to make that", or else assumes that I'm using the more traditional large scallops.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to use these?

Where can I find jeans for my tiny yet callipygian frame?

Where can I find jeans for my tiny yet callipygian frame? Continuing my goal of "aging up" my wardrobe, I'm looking for jeans that an adult would wear. But there are two factors that are making this particularly challenging:

I'm a short, skinny female (5'2", 100 lbs) with a frame that makes finding jeans difficult; even size zeroes at the Gap generally hang off me. I recently found a pair of 00P dress pants at Ann Taylor that fit, but 00P isn't exactly a common size to find in stores. So that's problem number one.

My second problem is the fact that I have a butt. Not a big butt -- I happen to think it's rather proportional to my body and, frankly, quite spectacular -- but in the rare event that I find a size zero that's cut snug enough for me, it also seems to be cut for someone with no body fat whatsoever. It flattens out my butt and has absurdly large pockets that go down so far they're on my thighs (not to mention the gapping at the back of the waist).

So I always find myself going back to the juniors department, where sizes are cut a bit smaller and also sometimes a bit more bootyliciously -- but jeans in the juniors department always have stupid fading or artificial tears or rhinestones or giant flares or whatever crap that clearly makes them juniors jeans. This does not work well with my desire to dress like an adult.

My question, therefore, is thusly: where in the U.S. (I'm in Chicago, if that matters) can I find women's jeans in very small sizes that are also cut to accommodate a curvier figure? (And, yes, I know the Gap has "curvy" jeans; see previous remark re: size zero at the Gap hanging off of me. If I recall correctly, the Gap curvy jeans in size zero weren't bad in the waist but were way too baggy in the thigh and hip.) I really don't want to spend more than $50, and I only want to spend $50 if they'll actually last for more than a year. Searching for previous questions directed me toward Make Your Own Jeans, but the idea of taking my own measurements and being out $50+ if the jeans don't fit isn't exactly appealing. I would very much prefer to go to an actual store and try things on.

Office Chairs for Short Girls?

Are there any office chairs out there for petite women? I have a short inseam and rarely can touch the ground when I'm sitting all the way back in my seat. I'm 4'11 and have never sat in an office chair that worked for me. If I sit back in the chair I cannot touch the ground. I have a ~28" inseam which means that even with shoes with high heels, my feet often dangle an inch or two above the ground.

I tried a kneeling chair, but they really don't work for me. Are there any traditional office chairs designed for short people? I looked at BodyBilt 756 which is designed for short people, but they have pretty indifferent reviews on the internet. I'd love to get one that I could try out at a store rather than buy sight unseen but I'll take what I can get!

Any advice? What do you have that you like (or hate?)

Petite boot shopping in Austin, Texas

Austin shopping filter: Where has a good selection of ladies casual calf- to knee-high boots for reasonable prices in Austin that is not in a mall? See details for specifics. I am looking to get a pair of flat, black boots, probably suede or suede-esque to wear with skirts mostly. I am looking to spend $100 or less. One problem is that I am very petite and many boots are either too tall and/or too wide in the legs for me and look very silly. That's why I need to find a place with a wide selection of brands so I can find one that runs smallish.
I've tried DSW and really most of the big-box shoe stores in Central and North Austin.
I've tried the mall/don't want to go back there because it's going to be a madhouse of people trying to get after-Christmas sales.
Online shopping is not an option since I have to be able to try them on my weird legs.
Thanks!
