What are the main differences between a Birman and a Ragdoll cat?
We are looking for a nice family cat and we have a seven year old. We are looking for a breed that has blue eyes, and is warm and affectioniate like a dog. I have heard that Ragdoll's tend to get really big, that is one thing I'm not sure we want. Any experiences you guys have would be appreciated.

Cat adoption filter: should we take in a young feral who seems to have adopted us, or should we find a different kitten to bring into our home? Complicating details inside. Bit of a novella, apologies in advance for the length. [more inside]

We just had a large tree cut down in our yard.
We decided to leave a large portion of the trunk lying horizontally on the ground in an area where we generally throw leaves and prunings.
One of our dogs is now barking nonstop at this large trunk. He's obviously scared and upset.
Any suggestions on how to calm him down?

I just found what looks like mosquito larvae in my cat's water bowl. I use one of those automatic waterers
where there is a gallon or so of water in a upside down container, feeding a small bowl of perhaps 2 cup capacity. In the large upside down container, there was actually one live, flying mosquito. In the small bowl that my cat actually drinks from, there were approximately a dozen apparent larvae, about 1/4" to 1/3" in length.
Should I be concerned for my pet's health at all? I am not sure how long they were in there, but I changed the water for fresh immediately.

My wife & I adopted/rescued a daschund recently who doesn't respond well to men. While we're trying to get the dog accustomed to me, we have problems where the dog will hide under our king-sized bed when my wife is out of town and I cannot lure it out. I've tried positive reinforcement, treats, and trying to grab it and gently guide the dog from its hiding place. [more inside]

I was just sitting outside on my friend's lawn with my dog, who was tied to a tree branch about 20 feet away (that I checked for strength before tying her up) and quietly watching squirrels. A woman walked by and smiled at us, and my dog lunged at her, breaking the tree branch, and proceeded to jump up on her and ram her nose into her, barking. I feel absolutely terrible and have no idea how to fix this. [more inside]
