Friends have invited me to go see the Pet Shop Boys in Boston on November 9 at the Orpheum. I would love to go, but I am old and I have an early flight the next morning. The show begins at 7:30 and I can't find anything about an opening act. I haven't been to a show in maybe a decade - my memories are of everything starting late and ending later (enshrouded in cigarette smoke), but they're getting old, too, right? Has anyone seen them play lately? How likely am I to get home before midnight?
I'm not talking about putting its paw on its nose. I'm talking about closing its eyelids on command and keeping them closed until released. Has anyone successfully done this trick with their dog? How?
Our lovely Russian blue has always had diarrhea, but is usually pretty good with going to the potty in the right spot. Now, however, he has started pooping right next to the litter box, onto the carpet. I sleep with him, and don't want to have to lock him up at night so would like to find a way to nip this issue in the bud. Help? [more inside]
My dog has been on a hunger strike for a few weeks now (not atypical for him during the hottest part of the summer, but this is getting ridiculous). He expresses interest in treats, people food, bunny poop, and cat food so it's not like he has zero appetite; he just has no desire for his usual dry food. [more inside]
How do we successfully have a dog? I, my housemate, and our three cats have four days to learn. [more inside]
So, yay - I've been chosen! But I can't have a cat, not really - my entire family is allergic to cats, and I have two pets now (a dog and a bird) who would NOT be okay with a cat in the house. My question is really about whether it is kind to try and keep a stray cat as an outdoor-only pet. [more inside]
Hello metafilter! We just brought home a new cat from the shelter today. He's a small, young, tuxedo who's simultaneously playful and a love bug. Name ideas? [more inside]
This is my dog and I have some dumb questions. I had dumb questions in this post too, but now I have more of them. [more inside]
I am interested in feedback from people who have purchased GPS tracking devices for their cat or dogs. Did it work? What is the best feature of your product? What is the worst feature? What other trackers have you tried? I am looking for the best tracker for finding my dog if he disappears on a walk or hike.
How can we manage our kitty's end-of-life well, and help our 10-year-old daughter cope? (Recs for age-appropriate, non-religious books on separation, loss, sickness, or death welcome.) [more inside]
It's another round of Name That Kitten! This lil fuzzbucket is coming to us next week with the placeholder name "MewMew". Which, no. We already have a cat named Goblin and are thinking we'd like a name that somewhat matches. Another entry from the Dungeons & Dragon's bestiary? Germanic mythology? Supernatural creatures? Please help us give poor MewMew a better nom de pet.
Me previously and previously. Sadly, the surgery wasn't successful-- the cancer returned, and I'm saying my goodbyes this week. Yesterday I was asked if I could adopt two bonded senior dogs. Obviously, I can't for the foreseeable future, but now I'm thinking about possibly getting a dog as a next pet. Looking for opinions or relevant experience. [more inside]
I'm adopting two five month old kittens. Yay! Now: what do I name them? Picture 1, Picture 2. The tabby is a girl, mild and pretty shy. The black and white is a boy, super playful and outgoing - he's going to be a trouble-maker! Name criteria inside. [more inside]
I'm 4ish months pregnant - yay! But partner thinks we need to give up our pet cockatiel because we won't be able to care for him and give him enough care and attention when baby arrives. Also, feather dust and bird poop do not mix well with babies! I do agree, but am finding the idea hard. Does anyone have any happy stories of having given up their pet for adoption and it all being ok? [more inside]
Do pets have a legal right to self-defense, and if so, can pet owners legally apply that right on behalf of their pets? [Trigger alert: extended explanation describes a hypothetical violent dog attack on another dog.] [more inside]
Is there a travel insurance that allows for cancellation in case of pet illness? [more inside]
I am visiting my mother for a couple weeks; I'd like to take my adorable little Kokopelli with me. I'll be driving and it's about 9 hours. I want to make sure that (a) my kitty is safe and comfortable during the trip there and back, and that (b) he can have a nice visit once we arrive. [more inside]
This mustachioed fellow is a 2 year old who has been living at a shelter. He is chatty, gregarious and loves a lap to sit on. Any ideas? I am open to anything as long as it's not too long and complicated.
She licks a lot. Compulsion or behavioral issue? [more inside]
I can get the meds from my vet, but I feel like I can probably get them cheaper online (vet price is about $70/6-month supply) and the lady at the vet is unpleasant. [more inside]
I recently came into possession of a juvenile bearded dragon. I realized, despite precursory research, I don't really know how to care for it. [more inside]
I would love to have a pet, but live in a 40sqm studio apartment. What would you recommend? [more inside]
My landlord asked me to look after her cat while she's away on a cruise for two weeks, and I somehow lost it, within a small enclosed space, in less than 24 hours. [more inside]
Family member found a lost kitty at a KOA campground in Colorado. Can Metafilter find her lost humans? Mefites have pulled off wonders before...can we do it again? [more inside]
We're headed on a family vacation next week that will take us down the east coast from Connecticut to Florida and back. The trip will last about 14 days and we'll be in a Mazda5 (micro minivan with a 3rd row) with 2 adults, 2 kids (8 & 10) and our adult rescue dog, Henry. We've never traveled with a dog before and so are looking for suggestions on how to make this process go as smoothly as possible. [more inside]
Through a perfect storm of Bad Things my bichon/poodle hasnt been groomed in about six months. I have bathed her a couple of times during that period and trimmed around her eyes and her butt a bit. I'm not going to be able to get her to a groomer's any time soon, and I'd like to figure out how to do it at home. It doesn't have to look perfect or in any style, I just want her to be clean and comfortable with short hair. [more inside]
Can you help me figure out how to care for our extremely fearful cat? [more inside]
What is the best way to to keep a cat from scratching at the bedroom door at night? [more inside]
We're going on vacation for 16 days. Our cat can't come. Should we board her in a kennel or hire a cat sitter? [more inside]
Kitteh is 17 and going strong, except that he's lost three pounds in the past several months. His vet has prescribed special food. I bought samples of two brands from the vet to see if he'd eat them and he likes them both (good kitty!) Now I need to find the best source to buy them from in bulk. [more inside]
How can I figure out what dog I want to adopt, when it's so hard for me to meet with them? [more inside]
I'd love to get my girlfriend a session with a pet photographer for her birthday - she's dropped hints about wanting to get some great photos or a portrait of her beloved cat. Any recommendations for good photographers/artists in Toronto?
A guy I've been seeing is super-great in every way, but I'm a bit concerned by a couple of instances I've witnessed where he's shoved a dog away--in, in my opinion, a slightly harsher way than necessary. More details inside. [more inside]
I have a wonderful eleven year old Westie. He's physically very healthy. He was just tested for Cushing's and cancer, both were negative. The only symptom he shows during the day is going out the dog door and then forgetting the dog door is there when he wants in. Bedtime is bad, and the accommodation we've been using failed tonight. Can you help me with ways to get him to bed safely? [more inside]
I currently have chest tightness since this past July. I used to have asthma as a kid. I've gone to my primary care doctor about 3-4 times already. The following tests were performed: [more inside]
What to do for an elderly, sick, underweight dog who won't eat his prescription food? [more inside]
I think my pets have sibling rivalry. [more inside]
We lost our indoor cat at around 1am this morning from our back yard in our quiet suburban neighborhood. It's getting cold outside, and we are worried about her. What can we do to find her? More details after the jump. [more inside]
My mom has had three green ALCO brand pet carriers for probably 30-40 years. They look like this and this. We still use them. They are awesome because they open from the biggest side of the box allowing you to easily shove a big, fat, ornery cat in there and close the mesh door. All modern carriers that I've seen have their door at the front, the smallest side of the box, and it's a total pain to get an animal in and out of there. Well, they certainly don't make ALCO carriers any more, and ALCO probably hasn't even existed for decades. Meanwhile, our carriers are in various stages of falling apart. I would like to know if any company makes a similar style, side-loading pet-carrier today, and, if so, where I can find it. [more inside]
DogFilter: I am going to meet a dog tonight. I have read some questions on what to do when visiting a shelter, but I'm not so sure what I should do/ask when going to someone's house to check out a dog besides belly rubs and "who's a good dog? who's a good girl?". [more inside]
What should we name our new bunny? [more inside]
For purposes that I probably don't need to get into, I'd like your saddest and/or most heartwarming links / photos / stories / etc. on the internet about dogs and our relationships with them. [more inside]
We recently adopted an incredibly sweet dog from a local shelter-- Frances is a three year old dachshund/chihuahua mix. She's super mellow and calm when we're with her-- never barks or chews, perfectly housetrained, doesn't react to other dogs or people when on walks... basically perfect and incredibly lovable... EXCEPT... when left alone, she becomes a nightmare destructo-dog. [more inside]
Bunny is a generally healthy, happy 1 year old with smelly poo the consistency of frosting. I'm thinking of switching her food out. What's the skinny on grain free/raw kitty food diets these days? [more inside]
I have an 8-10 year old, very strange, beagle. Last night I found her with eyes open, but unresponsive, clawing and biting at the wall. Is this seizure activity, night terrors, or something else? [more inside]
My dog just had an accident inside for the second time this week and probably the 15th this summer after 8 years of never having one. I am getting really fed up. Warning: gross descriptions of dog poo inside. [more inside]
This is Hendricks - he's a 55 lbs. hound/shepherd/mutt that we found at a local shelter back in January. He's pretty chill, except for a love of hunting bunnies that go across his back yard. Hendricks needs a friend - how do we start approaching this, and how do we find him a friend that will work for him and us? [more inside]
I have two Jack Russell Terriers, both sixish years old, and both with odd licking issues. One licks the exposed skin of people: legs, hands, feet. If you push him away, he will lick the couch. He has done this since he was a puppy, and though I think it's odd and slightly embarrassing when he goes to town on an unwitting friend's shin, it doesn't concern me. Our other dog has started licking his own front legs, above his paws (what his forearm would be if he were a person), so much that they are stained pink. He's done this for a few months now. When I took him to our vet for his yearly checkup, I asked whether she thought it was allergies. She said no, that it could be anxiety or arthritis. She didn't get into much depth (she is new to our vet office, and I don't know that I love her). He walks and runs just fine, so I don't think he is in pain. Does anyone out there have experience with compulsive canine lickers? Do I try to stop them (and if so, how?), or just let them be weird? Or do I change to a new vet who might be a bit more forthcoming?
Is there a cheaper way to purchase kitty food other than PetSmart or PetCo? Or if there's a website that magically sends it to the house? Four kitties who love Blue and Max Nutro are eating us out of house and home. [more inside]
Because of Reasons, Mr. Blues and I rented an apartment sight-unseen. We moved in last week. It is generally quite nice, but the balcony/deck absolutely reeks of urine. Evidently a previous tenant seriously neglected her dogs (and potentially cats? it smells like cat pee to me) and they used the balcony as a bathroom. It absolutely reeks. How can we and or the management company fix this? [more inside]
