Is there a cheaper way to purchase kitty food other than PetSmart or PetCo? Or if there's a website that magically sends it to the house? Four kitties who love Blue and Max Nutro are eating us out of house and home. [more inside]

Because of Reasons, Mr. Blues and I rented an apartment sight-unseen. We moved in last week. It is generally quite nice, but the balcony/deck absolutely reeks of urine. Evidently a previous tenant seriously neglected her dogs (and potentially cats? it smells like cat pee to me) and they used the balcony as a bathroom. It absolutely reeks. How can we and or the management company fix this? [more inside]

I moved to a new city and am renting a cool place. The catch is "no pets". My parents are taking care of my cat but I miss him terribly. My landlord lives in another country and never checks up on the place. Would it be a terrible idea to fly my cat over here without my landlord's knowledge? What's the worst that can happen?

I adopted a dog a month ago. The shelter held him for 10 days, but no one came to claim him. Now the shelter has received a call from someone claiming it is their dog, with a very sad story (death in the family) about why he was lost and no one looked for him. I feel very bad for these people if their story is true, and wonder if the dog would be happier with his original owners. I'm also very attached to the dog, as is my kitten, and have been crying a lot at the thought of giving him up. I can't get another dog now that I've started working in the afternoons - I had a lot of time this month to help him rehome. The dog was found not neutered despite being several years old, which makes me nervous about previous vet care, so I have asked the shelter to look into vet records. How can I make this decision? I have strong feelings on both sides of the argument.

Three days ago, I got three opaline gouramis (Trichopodus trichopterus) for my 20 gallon long aquarium. The tank is planted and has been up and running since November or so, but the only other fauna are some hitchhiker snails that I decided to keep. The gouramis aren't getting along. What would be the best thing to do for them? [more inside]

I have a good friend who wants a dog. Here is the criteria. We are looking for ways/places to go check out/ideas on how to find a dog for her:
-My friend lives in Northern California, and is willing to travel a reasonable distance (50 miles give or take). She is willing to pay adoption fees.
-Must be male.
-Can be of any breed/mix.
-Must be young to adult, but not a puppy.
-Must be medium to large in size.
-Must have all shots/vaccines.
-Must be neutered.
-Must be a rescue dog.
Help us find places to look around for rescue dogs. We have been striking out... maybe there's some places we aren't finding/thinking of besides the pound, pet shops, rescue agencies, etc?

My small dog loves squeaky tennis balls and will chase them incessantly, morning and night. However, he is also quite adept at de-squeaking these toys, sometimes within minutes. While he does continue to play with the balls after they have lost their sound, these are far less alluring. As neither my budget nor my house has room for the infinite supply of fresh squeaky balls he desires, I seek to re-squeak these balls with fresh squeakers and some super glue. [more inside]

Eleven hours ago our 80 pound dog, Oscar, put both his front paws through a small pane of glass in a set of french doors which resulted in lacerations to the "back" of both front legs. Thankfully we were home and reacted quickly by summoning our neighbor who is an exotic pet veterinarian. She was able to wrap up both legs and call ahead to the ER vet. Even with this quick reaction Oscar still lost a lot of blood and did pretty serious damage to one of his legs. The ER vet was able to repair the severed (partially or completely, they did not provide specifics) muscle, tendon and artery and we were able to bring him home about six hours ago. Now what? I've been living with my parents while fixing up my home. They have two dogs and a cat. It turns out that I love having cuddly, friendly buddies around. I'm going to be moving home this weekend and want a buddy of my own. I've always wanted a cat, but I want one that is super friendly. Do you own or have experience with Sphynx cats? Are they as affectionate and dog-like as websites claim? Or any other breeds known for being affectionate? My adult son and I live together and have opposite schedules, so the cat would almost never be alone

Hola folks! I am located in WNY area near the Canadian border (willing to drive into Ontario for shoppin'!) and am hoping someone can guide me in the right direction for the right kind of pants. I am looking for Semi-Fitted Lower-waisted (I am short waisted but have serious hips - I HATE those fold-down waist ones with a burning passion) Yoga pants to wear for Yoga & Workouts that also are *not* a matte/cotton type texture. I have light coloured animals in my home and also am self conscious about wearing light colours...hence for the sake of my sanity I like my yoga pants to be a "slick" texture and black or another dark colour. A week before my former roommate moved out her dog came into heat, resulting in my own ankle biter marking everything he could hike his little leg at. Apparently in his haze of lust he decided that bathing the house in stink would boost his chances of getting a bit of action. Defiled items include the back of my couch, my box spring and the linoleum in the kitchen (where I keep him penned up when I'm out). Also some bedding and other small items I'm comfortable throwing away instead of trying to clean.
Next week I'm moving to another property under the same management and hoping to get back most of my deposits (as well as keeping in the landlord's good grace) by getting the house as minty fresh as possible before I turn in the key.
I'm looking for some low budget recommendations on getting the stench out. I would prefer they be methods that you've used with success, so if I have further questions I can actually discuss it with someone who has experience with the specific method. [more inside]

We have 2 cats that are a little less than 2 years old. They are both active and healthy little terrors with no medical issues. One of them seems like she is always hungry. While I get that there are some animals that will whine for food until they drop dead from overfeeding, when I gave her more she seemed happier. However, at that point she gained a little more weight than she should have to remain healthy, so I wanted to find some food that is more nutritious, has less byproducts, more protein and helps them feel fuller.
