What's the deal with the ASQSE?

My 21 month old's daughter just sent home with her a questionnaire called the ASQSE, which from what I gather is intended to help diagnose ASD. Her answers on the questionnaire would indicate that she doesn't have a problem. BUT. They sent this thing home with me for a reason, right? [more inside]

Possible new career: clinical psychology? What do I need to know?

I currently have a career completely unrelated to clinical psychology, although it seems like a career path I'd like to investigate at the very least for multiple reasons. I'm interested in psychotherapy in particular. For people who work in the field, do you have anything to share about your line of work that isn't immediately obvious to outsiders? And what sort of person is best suited for this career? My personal interests are listed after the jump. [more inside]

Help Me Find this Online Service (if it still exists)

Quite a few years ago, I recall ordering a sort-of "background check" online, only it didn't just have the usual criminal background, legal stuff, etc.--it also had details about the way the person looked, their interactions with their family, personality tendencies and such. It was a little spooky, actually, all the personal details it included. [more inside]

Needs More Personality

As I'm edging closer to middle age, I am struck by how little I know myself. Occasionally I am asked to talk or write about myself (mainly for work purposes) and I have no idea what to say. I am fairly aware of my range of skills, but I have very little insight as to my personality traits. I have done the Myer-Briggs test, read several books and completed various career assessments, but I still struggle to define who I am. More details inside - but in short: how do others define and describe themselves? How do you become aware of yourself? Think more pragmatic/philosophical descriptions of your personality traits and less about CV bloats. [more inside]

How to break a cycle of inaction and resentment?

For most of my young adult and now adult life, I'm having more and more difficulty taking control of the resentment that seems to build up as the result of my inability to communicate. Ron Rosenbaum has intrigued me re: an aspect of Hitler's personality

Reading his "Explaining Hitler" a while back, Ron Rosenbaum briefly mentioned reading various explorations of Hitler's personality, one of which touched on the possibility that Hitler was not actually Hitler, but was merely 'acting like Hitler' and was very aware of the gap between real man and created monster. And I just thought he was nuts. While not overly concerned with Hitler himself, I am extremely interested in that idea: that people can be themselves, or other than themselves, or intentionally act like themselves on a long-term and global scale. I feel that way once in a while myself. It is a very hard topic to google, though (or explain, clearly), and my skills are thin. Does anyone know of this literature he referred to or anything similar? Or even what such a thing might be called? [more inside]

Is it okay to be this impressionable?

It's recently occurred to me that I am very, very impressionable and mold myself around to wherever/whomever I happen to be with at the moment and it's giving me some concern (Oh god I don't have an actual personality! I am such an easy mark! I will totally get swept up in group hysteria!). Should I be worried about this or should I just learn how to deal better with being a ball of wax? Details inside. I promise I'm actually a good employee!

I have an upcoming job interview for a fairly sales-oriented position in business. Putting aside that I'm not sure I want the position yet and that in my eyes it counts against the company that they put stock in this sort of thing, the company is about to send me a personality test which they use as a strong hiring indicator. I would prefer to ace the test, whatever that means, and have my actual interview and position discussion determine hiring. How should I go about answering a test that I don't believe will be reflective of my personality? [more inside]

career in communications with communication skills below par?

I love words, people, learning about the human condition. I am an emotional, artistic, warm and fuzzy person on the inside. But my shyness makes me come across as quiet and maybe even a little cold. My people skills probably aren't the best. Can I excel in a people oriented career like teacher or guidance counselor, where my true interests lie? Can I change my emotional reactivity without even trying?

Virtually all of my past relationships have had huge amounts of drama, a lot of which I have unintentionally encouraged. I have a tendency to pair up with emotionally withholding men, feel wounded and neglected, and then lash out verbally and emotionally in response. This has been my pattern for almost 20 years, yet now in my current relationship, I haven’t experienced this at all. I feel calm, collected, and content. Yet I haven’t made any conscious decisions to act differently - I just find myself behaving this way without trying. I am really happy about feeling so stable for a change, but it also seems too good to be true. Is it possible for a change like this to be legitimate and lasting? [more inside]
