"Works on Contingency? No, money down!" How does this work in Australia?

You are, of course, not my Australian lawyer. However, my SO may soon be hiring one for a suit against a hospital. To ensure that the lawyer we're hiring is the kind that we think we're hiring, she's asked me what the difference (if any) is between a no-win, no fee lawyer, and a lawyer that is hired under a contingency agreement. How do I go about sending a letter requesting an out-of-court settlement to someone I can potentially sue?

At the advice of counsel, I need to send a letter to a party I thought about suing suggesting we settle a personal injury case out of court. The lawyer is out of the picture for now, otherwise it'll cost me money. So... how do I do that? [more inside]

Last mile legal fee arrangement for personal injury claim

Another driver ran a red light and hit my car, leaving me with minor but permanent injuries. Their insurance company accepts liability and wants to settle, but their offer is about 20% lower than what I'm willing to accept. I've handled everything myself to this point (and have compiled 700+ pages of well-organized documentation), but the insurance company won't budge and it seems I'll need an attorney to negotiate the last 20%. What's the most reasonable fee arrangement for handling a nearly-resolved claim? [more inside]

Does our personal injury claim stand a chance?

My fiancée is only 24 years old, but she has osteoarthritis (see this previous question). As a result, she has a lot of pain, particularly in her back, but she is just generally sore all over. We suspect that her job (customer service in busy cafe with a lot of heavy manual work thrown in behind the scenes in the kitchen and store rooms) may have exacerbated her condition because before she started there, she never felt the sort of pain she feels now after just two years of working there. We're thinking maybe we should get a personal injury lawyer and see if we have a case. Do the medical and legal minds of the hive think we do, too? [more inside]
