How to verify state-issued sales certificate/tax ID?

How do you verify a state seller's permit/resale certificate and/or tax ID for US businesses? I know you can verify some state issued certificates online (like CA, TX and MN) to make sure that declared resale certificates and/or Tax IDs are legitimate, but is there a site or place where you can do this for any/every US state?

Having a hard time navigating Michigan's gov website in particular.

Toronto residential street parking permit availability

How easy is it to get residential street parking permits in Toronto? What are the chances of being put on a waiting list? I'm very close to renting a particular apartment in the Dovercourt Village area of Toronto, near Dupont and Ossington. The one thing that I'm worried about is whether or not I'll be able to get a street parking permit for my car. It appears that I can't find out without applying, and can't apply without proof of residence, but having no parking makes the apartment unsuitable.

The apartment has no parking available, so I'd be a priority #1 applicant.

Should I be concerned about being denied a residential street parking permit?

Getting a Job and a Work Permit in Canada

Can you provide me advice on getting a work permit in Canada. Also does anyone know about a good agent that will find me a job in and process a work permit for me. Hi All,
I'm an Asian, currently in USA as a computer science Masters student (Under F1 visa). I don't feel like I would want to complete my Masters (I'm still in early stages anyway). I would like to find a Job in Canada by the end of this Fall semester ( or even sooner).

- I have two college degrees (not double major, two degrees from two separate universities) in IT (from my country).
- I have 2 years of working experience in my country (working for USA clients)
- I have worked for nearly 1 year as a Research assistant at the University, developing web based systems for the USA university
- My experiences are mainly focused on VS.net 03/05 (vb, c#), SQL server, Oracle
- Age 27
- married and my wife is doing her PhD in USA
- No kids

My Questions are as follows.
1) Can you recommend me a good agent who will find me a job and process my work permit?
2) Does Canada have a work permit quota (similar to H1 quota in USA) ?
3) Any info or advice about the process of finding the job and getting the work permit.
4) how long does it take to process the work permit?
5) Any other advice that you can think of?

- I'm currently having 67 points (So I'm qualified) in their system to apply for PR. If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.
- If you have any other questions for me I can e-mail the answers to administrators or another user ( that is if someone volunteers to post it here :-) )
- If anyone needs u can contact me through jobs.canada.work@gmail.com

Thanks everyone for reading my long post.

Information on work permits in Canada

My american fiance has potentially been offered a job in Canada... we've been reading that a labour market opinion is required in order to offer him a job, as we are trying to get all the legwork out of the way. We have found the websites necessary, and all the forms, but I'm looking for any personal anecdotes from any MeFites out there who may have had to do a similar thing - looking specifically for potential processing times, etc. In addition, we've been informed that once the labour market opinion is complete, he can simply go to a port of entry with a letter from the employer and the LMO, and he will be processed for a work permit. As information on some government websites tend to be a little hard to locate, and decipher, we're hoping someone has gone through a similar procedure and can confirm/deny the information we've managed to gather.

Thanks in advance, email is in profile if any more info is needed.

What is required for a Chicago porch repair permit?

In Chicago, can I obtain a porch repair permit to fix my porch but not bring it entirely up to code? [(1) Sorry this is long. (2) I plan to call the City tomorrow but seek information here too.]

We live in a three-flat on the north side of Chicago. We have a three story porch off the back. It was built before the porch collapse that spurred the City to enact more stringent regulations, and was up to code when built. It is not up to the current code (rails are too short, we need more bolts into the house, and we need the porch anchored to the ground).

Our 4x4 columns are bowing and need replacing, and we are going to go up to 6x6s per the code. Two of three neighbors want to bring everything up to code at the same time, because if we are spending thousands, we might as well do it all at once. One does not, and says we should just replace the columns and be done with it.

The debate is this: what are the requirements for getting a permit? Our dissenter neighbor believes that we can obtain a repair permit that calls only for replacement of the columns, leaving everything else not up to code, on the theory that the porch was grandfathered in under the more stringent code and therefore we never have to fix everything if we do not want to. Apparently, there are local permit offices that will stamp permits on a walk-in basis if the applying party is a city-licensed contractor. We believe that the City will/should demand full code compliance before issuing a repair permit.

Can anyone familiar with this process explain who is right?

(At the risk of getting busted for two questions, does anyone have an architect and/or builder that they liked?)

Get me a license, quick!

What's the best location for a driving test in New York? Does anyone have any experience at the Wantagh location? I've got a bit of a problem:

I need to schedule a driving test in New York State on or before April 16th. I'd have scheduled it earlier, but I just received the required 5 hr course certificate.

Also: with Passover coming up, my regular restrictions on Saturdays are expanded to include April 2,3,4,9&10.

Currently the only thing I found available is the Wantagh location, and I've booked it. Is it an 'easy' site?

Apparently the Staten Island sites are easy, but they're not available within my limited timeframes.

So, just general reviews of NYS driving test locations, along with specifically the Wantagh location, and with a preference to relative closeness to the 5 boroughs.

Thanks!

American seeks an open Canadian work permit

How to get an open work permit for Canada (working in Quebec)? I am a US citizen who recently moved to Canada. I am currently here on visitor status and therefore unable to legally work.

A Montreal employer wants to hire me for an Internet marketing position and has agreed to sponsor me for a closed Canadian work permit (visa). This entails a process of the company proving to the government that they were unable to find a Canadian citizen to fill the position.

The problem is that the permit approval process is generally a long one -- perhaps even longer for Quebec -- and the company wants me to start working right away.

So I can work in the interim the company has asked me to obtain an temporary open work permit. With this I would be able to continue working even if the permit expires before the case is resolved.

One of the only open work permit options I found is through BUNAC USA's Work Canada program, sponsored by SWAP; unfortunately, I don't meet all the eligibility requirements (I'm not a student).

Hiring me under a NAFTA 'management consultant' exemption was another option my employer investigated, however, the interpretive notes were too specific and not applicable to the work that I'd be doing.

So, what (if any) other possibilities exist for obtaining an open Canadian work permit?

I never got my basment inspected. Should I?

When we finished my basement, I never got it inspected or approved by the town. Is this going to be a big problem for us? We had a concrete basement, dry, and we wanted to make a family room. A friends dad, who is a licensed contractor, did the work with us, on the side. No plumbing, just framing, drywall and electrical. He is a licensed electrician as well. We never got the electrical inspected, nor did we pull a permit. This was about 3 years ago. Should I have it inspected? Should I just wait until we decide to sell (if ever)? What are the ramifications of not having something like this inspected?

Trying to find details on Toronto party/gathering bylaws

My wife is hosting a baby shower for a mother-to-be that wants 50 people to be invited (she's even providing the list). But I have heard that here in Toronto, you need to have a permit for private gatherings of more than 25 where alcohol will be served. We can't find any detailed information on this though.
Anyone know where to look, or know the answer?

The Super Across The Way

What qualifications and licenses does one need to be a building manager? Some background: the building/condominium in which I live is currently managed by one of the owners who also happens to own a construction business, and his business has been the one making repairs--and billing the HOA--since the complex was built.

As more units have been sold, the new owners have begun questioning the bidding process (or, more accurately, the lack thereof), the cost of repairs, the budget, and exactly what is being done for the money being paid. The budget is out of date and several of the repairs and maintenance have not been made, and there's a sense of frustration among the owners at the money being paid for the slow pace of repairs and the lack of attention to detail we're getting. I suspect the current manager--who lives off-site and rents his units--has other projects with which he is occupied and he's too busy to give the complex the time and attention we need.

I've been doing many of the day-to-day repairs and maintenance for which the building manager should be responsible--essentially, I've been picking up his slack--and several of the owners have mentioned they'd prefer I be the building manager since I live and work here and I get things done quicker. The objections to this came from the current manager and another owner, both of whom said the building manager needs a contractor's license and workman's comp.

I'm interested in taking this on, and I'd like to know more about the legalities, qualifications, and licenses one needs to be a building manager/super.

Is there any recourse for being towed for invalid / incorrect reasons?

A friend’s car sat parked legally* on the street outside our house for approx 6 months. It was towed last week for being “parked on the grass” and for not “possessing a valid parking permit.” While there may have been other valid reasons for it to get towed, it was certainly not parked on the grass, nor did it need a permit to be parked there. The towing company denies wrongdoing (obviously) is doing everything possible to avoid responsibility. [MI]
