Recently moved to Portland (not me, asking for a friend) and seeking a good pediatrician for an infant, preferably NE Portland, and "crunchy" friendly, as in, supportive of extended breastfeeding, flexible vaccination schedules, intact boys, etc. Any suggestions? Please give detail, if so!
I'm going to be in Portland, OR in May. I was looking around for things to do and saw that I'll be there the weekend of the St. Johns Parade. Is it worth checking out? Relevant info: I'll be relying on public transportation. This isn't my first visit, so I've already done many of the usual must-do things. I am a big fan of parades in general!
People are coming over on Christmas and our carpets are pretty embarrassing. I remember seeing them in Safeway and Albertsons but I don't see them anymore. Does anyone know of a place to rent one for a few hours tomorrow in Portland?
My mom got sick to the point she was hospitalized for two days, pretty much vomiting up her stomach lining. Now she's home, she's lost her discharge instructions, and has a significant loss of balance so she tottering up and down flights up stairs with extreme risk, almost collapsing in the store when she goes to get groceries. She needs a visiting nurse service, something. [more inside]
Hi all - as you may or may not know, there are tons of forest fires in the Pacific Northwest. Today, Portland, OR was inundated with a ton of smoke. As someone with asthma, it's been pretty tough to handle. Where can I drive to be in an area with less smoky conditions? More below the fold. [more inside]

I live around 20th and Division and there is a mentally disturbed person living in their car. For about the last month I have woken up to them screaming crazy stuff. I actually thought they lived around us so I shrugged it off. [more inside]
Have not been to PDX in 5-6 years. Will be there next week from Wednesday 12/3 through Saturday 12/6. I'll be staying in DT Portland. Restaurants are covered. Looking for a bike rental shops, coffeehouse's with awesome pastries and pies, and other random cool places. My hangout spots are Hawthorne District and (of course) Powell's. I am also a Farmer's Market junky and would appreciate suggestion on local markets that will be taking place during that time. Thanks in advance...

For instance, my SO really wants to find a place that serves gooseneck barnacle like they did here and explore spots like the abandoned Upper Salmonberry River Railway. We wanted to see sloths, but it was booked. We know these kind of unique local gems are coveted, but does anyone mind sharing their favorite off-the-beaten path activities in PDX? [more inside]

The birdsong in question! This is a bird in southeast Portland, OR. We've never caught a definite glimpse of it, so I cannot give any details on size/color/et cetera. This is its main song (although it was singing kind of short this day); it cycles this for an hour or more. It varies slightly at some point, but then comes back.
It's sung by a woman in some kind of retro rock-y style that I can't quite articulate. It's a list of foods that girls either.. like or don't like, and the chorus is about popcorn.. I think. Challenge: pretty sure this is from a Portland, OR band, as I heard this on the local Portland-centric radio station KZME. [more inside]
My spouse recently got a job where he's on his feet all day, and his feet and knees are starting to hurt. He really needs more support/padding I guess. He also needs steel-toe. Shoes or boots are fine. What should he get? [more inside]
My Portland, OR area condo has condensation inside the windows that causes recurring mold growth. Please help me remedy this. Pic and many details inside. [more inside]
Last week I managed to have an attack of vertigo at work which resulted in me collapsing, throwing up all over the floor, getting stretchered out of the office, into an ambulance, into the ER, an overnight hospital stay and a diagnosis of Vestibular Neuritis. Fun times. The doctors there have been telling me that my symptoms will clear up soon, but the more I talk to people, the more this sounds dubious, and I very much want to see an ENT. [more inside]
We have a car that can't be started following a serious oil leak. The mechanic in the family has requested me to find someone who will steam-clean the engine on a mobile basis. I called a bunch of places, but none of them makes house calls, except for a guy who does pressure-washing, which our mechanic says won't work—the pressure will damage the electrical components of our elderly VW Vanagon. Do you know of anyone in the Portland OR area who does mobile steam-cleaning? Or another way to degrease the engine besides towing the car to the steam-cleaning place and back?
I want to buy a cap for summer. Five panel, fitted, snapback, whatever. Something like this, this, this, or this. I'm in Los Angeles this week and Portland next week. What streetwear shops should I visit? [more inside]
Roughly five years ago, a friend and I were browsing second-hand stores on the East side of Portland, and stumbled upon one that was weirdly memorable, mostly because we now have absolutely no idea where it was located, but have the lingering feeling that it's something that we pass by all the time and somehow aren't noticing. All available clues below the fold... [more inside]
New Neighborhood in Portland OR! New to me, anyway. I could use some help! I now live downtown. What bars, pubs, etc, are great for a casual first date? I'm in my late 30s if that helps. [more inside]

Me and the wife will be flying out to Portland, Oregon roughly six months from now to check out the city to see if we want to relocate. We were thinking of not renting a car and just using light rail to get around, since good public transportation is a major factor of why we want to relocate. How good or bad of an idea is this?

In the late 90s in Portland, Oregon, there was an AM radio program called the Saturday Morning Rock Show (if I'm remembering right) on (maybe) 1010 AM. Ran for 3-4 hours or so. Switched to Sundays at one point, then back to Saturdays I think, and then was gone. For most of their time they only played local Portland bands. [more inside]

I often find myself in places where I don't know players in the local pro scene (assuming there is one). For example I have had limited success with sites such as LinkedIn and facebook in trying to find potential chamber music partners in Portland for a sightreading session at short notice. Is there a good website for making connections between like-minded people who enjoy making music for fun at the highest level? If not, is this something that would attract any interest from others, not that many classically-trained musicians necessarily read mefi?
So I'm visiting my wife's family in Portland and just discovered that the electronics surplus wonderland known as "Wacky Willy's" went out of business several years ago. It was sort of like Archie McPhee's for Maker types. Are there other similar places that I can take my budding geek 12-year-old that are similar to Wacky Willy's? [more inside]

Kingdom of Fungi. Do people who live in the Pacific Northwest have more yeast infections, mold in their houses, and mushrooms in their woods?
I have a wedding to go to in Eugene. I am flying in and out of PDX. I know that it's a 2 hour drive between the two. My flight was at 5pm on Monday, but now (thanks!) it's been moved up to 1pm. I need a plan for coming back to Portland on Sunday, staying the night, and then getting to the airport at a reasonable time. [more inside]
We're living in Portland, Oregon and I'm looking to buy a bike I can use to cycle a few miles to work downtown and get around our neighbourhood. There's so many bike shops here we don't know where to start looking. I'd prefer a good-quality secondhand bike, but could probably stretch to a new one if I had to. Neither of us are bike nerds so are wary of being sold the wrong thing, so we're after a place that will give us good, honest, advice and have a good range of bikes. Thanks.
I joined an improv group through meet-up.com. Our current practice space is part of a set of mall storefronts that have been converted into a haunted house. At the end of summer they are going to resume haunting folks and we will no longer have practice space. Any thoughts on where in Portland OR. we might be able to find relatively private rooms that have seating and an open area that are either free or extremely cheap? [more inside]
