I want to read pdfs on my iphone, but unless the pdf was created with larger than normal text, it's generally too small to read. They don't use the available space efficiently and there is often large margins that could have been used to enlarge the font. Here are some shots of what I'm talking about. I've read that epub is the format I am looking for but haven't been able to find my pdfs as epubs (the books I get are mostly textbooks or from small authors that sell their books on their own sites (like Smashing Magazine), not through e\retailers who may have multiple formats), and converting via online services or desktop apps like Calibre have not been successful, especially for large documents... I've commissioned someone to create a rendered "artist's impression" of a planned housing development, but he priced it under the assumption that the architect would release Autocad files of the project. It turns out that the architect will only supply PDFs of the building plans. How can I find someone to turn these plans into something my artist can use, and how much should I expect to pay? All I need is the outside of the building, including the grounds and property fence.

Perhaps this is just a fantasy, but is there any application or online tool that could search through the references of an article I have saved as a PDF, in order to check whether I have those cited articles in my larger PDF library? It would be perfect if it would highlight, link, or somehow display cross-referenced relationships between all my articles. I am already familiar with many referencing/PDF organization software such as Papers (Mekentosj), Sente, and Devonthink. I suppose what I have in mind is a similar tool, but with the additional power of something like ISI Indexes. I have a fairly large library (about 300 references that I'm actively using, and more than 2000 total) and I'm just trying to get some "big-picture" grasp of how all these sources relate to one another.

Adobe Acrobat/Distiller query: I choose Adobe PDF 9.0 from the print dialog of Word 2008 on my Mac, and choose PDF/X-1a:2001 from the PDF Options. I click Print, am asked for a filename/location, the printing queue window opens, but NO FILE IS SAVED! What am I doing wrong? If I try and open the Word doc from within Acrobat, to output it there, it tells me it can't be outputted as a PDF/X-1a file.

I have many scans of books in PDF format. The problem is that each PDF page has two side-by-side book pages and I want to optimize them for reading on a kindle. Because the scans are pretty regular, I am hoping it would be easy to automate the slicing of one page into two and then recompiling the halfpages into a single document. Does anyone know of any open source programs to do this? Perhaps a python library? A feature of Adobe Acrobat?
