Need to shrink a PDF *and* retain full-bleed layout

I developed a PDF in Illustrator that is 30MB. I need to get it down to an emailable ~1MB. I've found two services to help me with this: Opening in OS X Preview and doing a PDF export, or using smallpdf.com. Both make them small enough. However .... [more inside]

OS X only makes bitmap PDFs

When I make a PDF from any application in OS X (10.3.x), they come out pixelated. Much like the steering well in the pirate's pants, it's driving me nuts. [more inside]

Adobe competitors in the PostScript/EPS/PDF axis?

Am I overestimating Adobe by saying that their PostScript/EPS/PDF axis is one of the most unbreakable semi-monopolies in modern computing? Does it have any serious competitors in that regard?
