I obtain pdf documents many ways: website downloads, via email, subscriptions, etc. And I use Copernic Desktop search. Some pdf documents simply are not searchable, even though they contain plenty of text. When I find these, I upload them to Google Drive which makes them searchable using Google Drive search. Is there a way to know immediately from the pdf itself if it is searchable? [more inside]

Just a quick poll here: I have an older Windows XP machine that I never installed any Adobe products on, but now my wife wants to use that computer and *needs* to edit pdf files (nothing fancy). Should I upgrade to Windows 10, just so I can get the latest greatest Adobe pdf editor? Or try some sketchy PDF editor that still supports XP? Or..?

I often need to refer a person to a specific page in a PDF document linked in an email. Sometimes the document contains page numbers on headers or footers that do not match the numbering of the PDF file. For example, the page with “12” displayed in the footer is page 16 of the PDF file, because the file includes four pages of front matter. “Page 1” as labeled in the document is the fifth page of the file, as shown in the document reader’s toolbar. I make my students submit their assignments (for college writing classes) by uploading them as PDFs to our course management system. Sometimes students submit broken or un-openable files. My question is, how do I tell the difference between a real PDF file that became corrupted somewhere along the line and a fake corrupted PDF file created by a student who didn't do the assignment and wants an excuse? Before building my own... does this software exist? I need to search a collection of PDF & Word files for key phrases, and dump the surrounding lines (x-m to x+n characters/lines, where x is the found phrase) into text files. I occasionally need to search a few dozen files for a few dozen data items, which usually have some identifying text nearby. This needs to be automated. Big bonus if it implements OCR, but that's not essential. Freeware, or cheapware, obviously is best. Windows-based is preferable, but I can do Linux.
I have a PDF that I'd like to convert to ebook format. It's straightforward - body text with just a handful of images - but the ebook needs to have the same font and style of the PDF. (I also have it in InDesign, if that helps.) I'm looking for a designer, or design agency, who has worked on ebooks before, who can take this on. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Seeking Adobe Acrobat replacement for Mac OS X. I have Acrobat 8 Standard for Windows, which has served me well. But Adobe only offers their "Pro" version for Mac, which costs way more than I want to spend ($450), and it's also more than I need. So I'm looking for an alternative; free is great, but willing to pay for a solid software package. Intuitive and easy-to-use is a big plus. List of features I tend to rely on most in the "More Inside" section. [more inside]

Please help me thwart the evil Adobe empire so that I can read the Valve Handbook for New Employees (and other .pdf files) on my Macbook again! I've got a PDF (a magazine). I'm trying export some pages from this PDF (my article), as a separate PDF. I'm on a Mac (10.6.7). This seems like it should be easy, but I can't print my selected pages to PDF (it's grayed out in the "Save to PDF" drop-down), nor can I find any options to save-selected-pages-as or export-to. My searches have only turned up now-obsolete, non-functioning programs like PDFlab and PDFsam. What am I missing? Should I just print out the pages and scan them back in?

Is what I want achievable with the software I currently have or should I forget the idea?

iWork question: When exporting my document to PDF in Pages '09, the resulting text quality is really poor for the regions that are set in 8pt Helvetica Neue.
