What's the best and most reasonably priced software (or free method), on both the Mac and PC platforms, for scheduling computer startup and shutdown, along with application startup and shutdown. Different software for each platform is fine. Being able to control this from an iPhone would be great too. [more inside]

What is the best Anti-virus and firewall apps for a Win 7 PC in 2011?
I just purchased a new Dell PC, and I'd like to set it up with a good anti-virus and firewall program.
The general consensus seems to be that McAfee and Norton are bloated, resource-hoggy, and ineffective. Google turns up plenty of free programs, but credible, CURRENT reviews are hard to find.
Many of the big programs offer "security centers" - huge programs that combine anti-virus, firewall, malware removers, and phishing protection. Some of this seems necessary, others not-so-much.
Also, Win 7 has a firewall built-in; since I'm not remotely a security expert - I have no idea if this is sufficient, or I need a 3rd party app on top (or instead of it).
So, what's a conscientious but non-expert Windows user to do?
(I know, I know - get a Mac. Which I've done - I LOVE my iMac. But I ALSO need a PC for work...)

Two PCs have died in our house over that past month. Both were old(ish) and neither was much-loved, so no tragedies (we back them up). I've already replaced one (a 7 year old Dell Dimension 8400) and will eventually replace the other -- a Mac mini. Here's my question: any idea why both would suffer similar deaths?
In both cases, they seem to boot up, show the first stage of loading their respective OS, then cycle straight into a non-responsive screen with only a tiny square of light (ala the Matrix). Both machines have surge protectors and the PC had a profusion of anti-whatnot software. Any ideas?

My CD/DVD drive on my HP laptop isn't working. It won't open when I push the open button, doesn't respond when I try to open it through a program, but can be forced open. However, when I insert a disc of any kind, it doesn't read it. Is there a way to solve this problem, or will I have to go through the annoying process of taking it to Best Buy and having them send it out for two weeks?
Oh, and also I am running Vista, if that means anything.

Question for Graphic Designer types: What's the best solution for secure and reliable online storage, with 24/7 access from a desktop/laptop (Mac, PC and Linux), smart phone and/or mobile device and the web, for gigabytes of graphic design files? These files include various large image formats (JPG or TIF), Indesign, Word and Illustrater files, etc, etc.
Bonus points if this secure and reliable service allows people to seamlessly add files to a public folder, either via drag and drop or email. [more inside]

I've just successfully installed Win7 onto an older but servicable PC in order to use it as a streaming media player in another room. Problem is that although it can see
all of the shared files, folders and drives on my main machine it keeps telling me I don't have the correct permissions whenever I click on them - but permissions are set to 'Everyone' and another machine (a netbook) I do the same thing with can see and play everything perfectly... can anyone offer any help or suggestions please, I'm at my wit's end! Thanks in advance!

My laptop power cord's ground prong (the third prong) broke off, and it stopped working in most wall plugs. I ordered a new one and when it came, it didn't have a third prong, but it works fine. Why is that? And more importantly, is there some future situation where I'm going to regret not replacing the old one with a new, three-prong plug? [more inside]
