My PC has been overheating. I cleaned it out as best I could, and it ran better for a while, but still overheats and crashes when playing a taxing game. I've taken to opening the case and pointing a small fan into the case, against all the advice I've read, but it works. What's a long term solution? [more inside]
Friday night the hard drive my Steam and Origin games were installed on died the death of the dreaded click. All is fixed, except for the Windows 10 uninstall programs menu. [more inside]

I played it in 1998-1999, using my PC with a 3DFX card. The character was controlled from a first-person perspective in 3D, and the game was very immersive - you were walking around a planet, with grass and water. There were bunny-like animals that wandered up to you; you could kill them (though that wasn’t the point of the game). That’s just about all I can recall. Any ideas, guys?
I'm worried I've done something deeply stupid and potentially made my PC vulnerable. Full details below the fold. [more inside]
I remember going to someone's house for regular sessions of this very long game about a quest for something that had to do with aliens, spaceships and weird planets. The defining thing about the game was that your Windows PC computer kept track of what was going on, even though you spent a lot of time reading passages the computer assigned you to read, from cards or a book. So it had this hybrid aspect reminiscent of VCR games.
My PC is getting old. Help me decide on a cost-effective upgrade that will improve my gaming experience. [more inside]

So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.

I've played Skyrim on a PS3 for a while now. I love it, but after hearing about all the mods you can do with the PC version, I was eager to buy the PC game. I've been trying to play it on my computer, but it's awful. [more inside]
I'm looking for a small-ish console- or AppleTV-sized Windows 7 PC for gaming and possibly media playing, and I could use opinions. Researching the topic is fraught and messy and horrible (reviews of varying usefulness/reliability, lots of different people doing different things with the same products) so I could use personal stories if you have them. So this is a weird one - on occasion, my own computer loses connection to my WiFi signal - whereas my roommate, who sometimes is logged on to the same network via the same signal and sometimes IN THE SAME ROOM - does NOT. Please suggest where I should look to start diagnosing the problem. [more inside]
It's time to replace the household PC. I'm a programmer, I use PCs all the time, but I have not paid attention to PC hardware specs in maybe a decade, so I'm lost in a sea of mostly equivalent choices. [more inside]
My 14-yo has been talking about a gaming computer for many moons. He wants to play Steam games: Minecraft, Don't Starve, Day Z, etc. Mainly networked playing. All of the computers we look at are just a really high end, colorful box with no OS, no monitor, no keyboard or mouse for around $800-$900. I am looking for an all-in-one that is graphics, ram and HD expandable and will run Steam (mostly) effortlessly. All suggestions welcome!

Until recently, I was able to plug headphones or audio cables running between the Line In jack on my monitor into the green Line Out jack in this picture, and successfully hear sound. I don't know what happened, but now I get nothing. There has been a weird unprompted change in my volume control settings: it looks like this when before I'm pretty sure it was a speaker icon. I can click on the slider and do a test like so, but no actual sound comes out. Can you help me troubleshoot?
I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
I'm going to be traveling a fair amount over the holidays which means I'll likely be on public WiFi a lot more than usual, and with all of the various security and privacy issues that have popped up in the news recently, I figure the time is ripe to figure out a VPN strategy (since not everything I do is over SSL/HTTPS). My four year old home-assembled Windows desktop PC was working fine until a recent move. Now, when I turn it on, it seems to be booting as usual but then powers down about 15-45 seconds after powering on. What's the likely problem? What do I do next? [more inside]
I have $500 and need a PC for my son. He plays TF2 and similar games but not the newest cutting edge graphics-power-needing marvels. I could buy one, but would it be a worthwhile dad-son project to build one? How many hours would it take, ballpark? [more inside]

I bought my very first mac yesterday - an iMac. Very excited!!!! I went through the start up screens where it offered to automagically transfer my files from my 5 year old sony vaio laptop, sitting in the same room. I am normally skeptical but decided to exercise blind faith and let it do it's thing. When it starting the transferring/migrating sequence, it said 40 hours left. Should I have done something different/better and why didn't it warn me? [more inside]
My husband has a problem with his computer and we can’t figure it out. He has a PC with Windows 8.0. He’s having trouble with three specific programs (Chrome, Google Earth and iTunes). The three problems started at about the same time. Is this a problem with his PC or with the programs or something else? (details and pictures inside). [more inside]
I've very recently (ie yesterday) got myself a brand new desktop PC! I would really like your advice on the best ways to keep it running at its best, protected from the nasty things that lurk on the internet (virii, malware, spyware etc) and set up to get the most out of our blossoming relationship... The machine runs on Windows 8. [more inside]

I have a Galaxy S4 and I generally transfer pics from it to a Windows 8.1 PC via USB, connecting up the Samsung as an external hard drive, navigating down to the DCIM folder on the camera's external SD card, then dragging & dropping. Recently, all my photos more recent than Feb 2014 are not visible via Windows Explorer even though the camera itself shows that those photos are indeed stored in the same folder on the external SD card that has all the pre-Feb photos. What gives? Are they hidden form view somehow?
I played a demo of this a long time ago, and its bugging me. It was a PC game, possibly late 90s/early 2000s, I think it was a Microsoft game. [more inside]
So: junior has saved up to buy his own computer. Since we're, by habit, a Mac family since forever, but he's opting for a PC, I'm finding the thicket of options a little overwhelming. The main issue is to reconcile requirements for gaming, durability (and potential futureablility) and price. (Also: we're in Europe, so some models/options don't seem as readily available as in the US.) The other main piece of information I'm missing is the reliability - in terms of build quality and service - of PC brands. Is there a good place to find some guidance - or is it really a lot easier than it seems? [more inside]
I use an ancient MS Natural Keyboard, but the main thing that's relevant here is the key mechanism. The Goog will show you models old and new. I recently took mine apart, cleaned the plastic parts with water, got it nice and clean (years of accumulated cookie crumbs, etc.) The problem is - now the keys are kind of stiff. For example, if I strike them at a slight angle, they don't depress as smoothly as before. The standard advice online is to clean a keyboard to prevent sticky keys, but I have the opposite problem. Is there some kind of lube/oil/spray I can use?

My husband and I bought two monitors a little over 12 months ago. They worked just fine for 6 months when his developed an intermittent fault. Essentially, the screen abruptly goes static-y and weird, and horrible noise comes out the speakers - I guess it should be described as interference. None of the controls work and it has to be powered down and back on again. Two months after his started going wrong, mine did too - exactly the same way. [more inside]
Just wondering if I should invest my time/money into this game (having NO experience with it in the past). [more inside]
