My old 2012 PC is starting to wear down a bit but lack of funding means I won't be able to do a complete rebuild until a few years down the road. Looking for advice for decent upgrades and advice for installing new parts. [more inside]
I'm comfortable with computers, but far from an expert. But other people see my comfort and presume that I'm a total pro and ask that I take a look at their PC, because "its running too slow". What FREE bit of software would you recommend to optimize a person's Windows 7 PC so runs a bit faster or smoother? These users all use the Microsoft Suite and Firefox. Is there FREE software on the PC that deletes old caches or files or something similar?
I'm interested in the Dell Inspirion 15 5000 Series, but I'm not sure if Dell is worth the time. Chiefly, I need a good laptop for university, photography editing, blogging, writing essays, youtube, reddit, playing chess, downloading pdf files, computer programming, and possibly Minecraft. Hi MeFi, I have a PC I bought in 2012 and it has served me well for past years, however, it skips/lags when it comes to 1080p/4k video. I am looking to upgrade to a better card but unsure what factors I have to consider before upgrading. I mostly do video editing + motion media. The machine is as follows: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) CPU: AMD FX-8150 (Zambezi 32nm Technology) Motherboard: Gigabyte 2AC8 Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7570 2gb RAM: 16gb Is there a site that will let me figure out which GFX card(s) my machine is upgradable to? Thanks in advance!
I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
Just got a new internal hard drive for my PC and would like to copy files from my netbook to my PC's new hard drive. [more inside]

After several years away from Windows, I built a PC with Windows 7 and I'm using it with an Airport Extreme router. On my wireless icon in the tray is a small yellow shield and when I right-click for status I see "IPv6 Connectivity: No network access." I'm getting slow speed tests on my new PC and I think this may be the cause of it. Otherwise, my status shows that my IPv4 has Internet, speed is 130Mbps, and my connection is at high strength. I'll have a long enough ethernet cable to test that out next week but I'd like to get my Wifi up to the speeds that my Macbook gets routinely. My wifi card is the Asus PCE-N15. My Airport has updated firmware, as does my PC wifi card. I'm on Comcast cable internet with a 30mbps tier. Thanks!
We have some never-on-a-network PCs set up in a lab at work; all are running Windows Vista. We need a good way to keep up-to-date antivirus software on them without relying on an internet connection. [more inside]

I have a Western Digital Elements 1 TB External Hard Drive. I uploaded files onto it from a Mac, and want to put those files onto my PC. Problem is, my PC doesn't recognize my hard drive now when I plug it in, and instead asks me to reformat the whole drive (which I previously had to do on the Mac). [more inside]
Recommend an external hard drive? I'm looking for something in the 500GB range, Windows (XP) format, UBS 2.0 or earlier. Thanks!

My CD/DVD drive on my HP laptop isn't working. It won't open when I push the open button, doesn't respond when I try to open it through a program, but can be forced open. However, when I insert a disc of any kind, it doesn't read it. Is there a way to solve this problem, or will I have to go through the annoying process of taking it to Best Buy and having them send it out for two weeks? Oh, and also I am running Vista, if that means anything.
What I want is a wireless mouse which has two or more receivers that plug into my computers and a button or switch somewhere on the mouse that lets me switch between each receiver. Does this exist? [more inside]

I'm ready to buy a new desktop PC with Windows 7, and I can't decide whether to spend more money on a faster CPU or more memory, if either. Which would be better in the long run: i7-860 (or even i7-920) with 6 GB RAM, or i5 with 8 GB of RAM? Considering the CPU alone, is an i7 instead of an i5 worth the extra money? [more inside]

My desktop computer has just died so I'm thinking of finally buying a notebook to replace it. Problem is, I know very little about the notebook 'scene' and have no real idea what's good and what's not. Out of all the notebooks available from here, which one would you get? My budget is $2000 but I'd go as high as $2500 if there was a compelling reason to do so. And if there's any extra accessories I'm really going to need, let me know. Thanks!

My PC is sick. Before I repair it, I want to build a new one to use while I work on it. I'm thinking of a HTPC sort of thing. Something I can use on the desktop in the office if need be, but also small and quiet enough to move to the living room and still powerful enough to run modern 3d games. I don't need the latest, fastest framerates, but it would be nice to have the option of playing some modern first person shooters. [more inside]
