I have made several purchases from a small on-line company. They have always shipped the order out correctly and on time. I just received and email from them stating that they had a problem with my payment. If they genuinely had a problem, I want to help them fix it. If this is a scam, I don't want to be an idiot. I'm confused by them telling me not to reply to the email, but to send a new one. I would appreciate any help or advice that anyone could give me. [more inside]

I'm a Canadian living in the US with an outstanding Canadian student loan. Getting paid in US dollars was working in my favour with regards to making monthly payments on the loan, but not so much anymore with the Canadian dollar on the rise. Is it predicted that the Canadian will stay up and keep rising in value, or this a temporary blip? I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and pay my loans off now, in one go, or ride it out for a few months to see if the US dollar manages to pick itself back up.
I realise that there is no one, scientific answer for this question, but educated guesses are appreciated.

After my wedding a few weeks ago, I found out that my DJ had eaten a full 3-course meal, instead of the much cheaper vendor meal he was supposed to have (he also took the vendor meal). I stopped payment on his check, and sent another for the amount less the cost of the vendor meal and the $50 gratuity I had given him. They're now sending my original check to collections. Am I in the wrong? What should I do? [more inside]

I'm about to list a relatively expensive item on Craigslist (asking ~$700) and have been reading up on all of the different scam horror stories and what _not_ to do. I'm only going to be dealing with someone in person, and I won't accept any wire transfers, cashier checks or money orders because of the high abuse potential, but I'm not sure what this leaves as viable alternatives for what I _should_ do to receive payment. A former colleague of mine has a consultancy business and wants to subcontract some work to me. I would be introduced to the client as the person who will be handling all aspects of the project and will also be the main point of contact for that client. I know how much this client will be billed on a monthly basis and my question is what percentage of that amount should I realistically expect to receive for doing all the work? Is there a standard subcontractor percentage that I can quote?

A very good friend of mine had her cellular telephone stolen the other day, and by the time she noticed this and reported the theft to T-Mobile, the thief had made many hundreds of dollars worth of calls to a foreign nation. After many calls back and forth, T-Mobile says they are doing her a great favor by waiving 25% of the costs but she is responsible for the rest. Is this right? Why would they treat a supposedly valued customer of several years this way? The T-Mobile reps tell her there is no appeal process or ombudsman; does anyone know if this is really true?

I bought an engagement ring with the store CC and was given 6 months no interest. Well that six months is almost up, and I'd love to be able to get my CC's 1% cash-back. Problem is, if I transfer the money to my CC, I don't get the 1% back.
I have the money and can pay it off, but 1% is a significant amount and I'd like to finagle that 1% into my wallet if at all possible.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks for the help,
SEINFELD

There's a wonderful liqueur that I'd like to buy as a gift, but it's only available from a distillery in Germany. I contacted the distillery, and with my somewhat limited German, was able to ask about shipment to the US. They can ship it, but don't accept payment via credit card, but rather "mit Rechnung." This I believe to be "by check," but I'm not sure. Has anyone had experience with this kind of transaction? Some German sites I saw which also require that kind of payment have forms that ask for a password. Is this an EU thing only?

I'd like to make a presidential campaign contribution, but I want to avoid being put on any kind of list. Should I mail cash? I'm afraid to use a check or credit card. It will be under $200, the threshold above which the law requires the campaign to report my info. I guess I could do a money order. But are completely anonymous donations okay? If so, what's to stop someone from making 1,000 different anonymous donations of $150, and skirting the $200 law?
