Due to some contractual inefficiencies that aren&apos;t worth getting into, I have been asked by my boss to suggest some non-raise ways of increasing my employment package. I have a basic idea or two (more vacation time, built in raise at the end of the year of X%), but am looking for some more suggestions.&lt;br&gt;

About my job: Have been on contract for 1.5 years; new contract will be Jan 1 to Dec 31. Work for a large publicly traded communications company in a senior-ish role. Can&apos;t get a permanent role until someone leaves, which, for reasons that aren&apos;t worth getting into, will almost definitely not happen before Jan 2011 at the earliest.</description>

	<title>Mistake in federal job announcement: Recourse in holding agency to terms?</title>

This after investing an enormous amount of time, energy etc. in the application process. Do I have any recourse? So, after a *tremendous* amount of personal time, effort and emotion invested, I have been offered a good job working for a federal agency in Alaska. The position is a GS-14; the job description says:&lt;br&gt;

&quot;Salary Range: &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;95,010&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;.00 - 123,519.00&quot;&lt;br&gt;

So I just got a call from the HR folks, making a formal offer. Here&apos;s the thing: The woman who called me said the salary listed on the job announcement was a &quot;very unfortunate&quot; mistake - the actual amount she was authorized to offer is &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;$83,445&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; + COLA.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Needless to say this is dismaying, particularly since I invested so much time into interview preparation, getting my portfolio together, etc. etc. etc. Do I have any recourse here to hold the agency to the salary listed in the announcement?&lt;br&gt;

Any guidance gratefully appreciated.&lt;br&gt;

PS If it matters, I THINK what happened (I am totally not an expert -- this is just what I came up with after a little research) is this: In the Lower 48, you get a base salary ($83,445) plus a &quot;locality adjustment.&quot; In Alaska, you do not get this &quot;locality adjustment&quot;; instead, you get the base salary plus a &quot;Cost of Living Adjustment.&quot; If I&apos;m right, the salary listed in the job announcement mistakenly includes a base salary AND a Lower-48 style &quot;locality adjustment&quot; (plus of course it says &quot;In addition to the salary listed the selectee will also receive a cost of living allowance of 23%.&quot;)</description>

	<title>Low starting salary?</title>

	<description>Recent MSc graduate offered low starting salary. Now what? I just graduated with a Masters in a science field whose degrees are very much sought after this year. I was offered a really nice job in this company that I would like to work for, however, the starting salary is about 10-20% lower than what it would be in other companies. That being said, I am grateful for any job. There was a real crunch in the industry a couple of months ago, where employers were heavily cutting back on their budgets and hence not recruiting then. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Are my expectations too high for an entry-level job? Or should I try to negotiate for more? If so, how would I do so? Keep in mind that I am in a science and technology field where people with my degree are very, very heavily in demand. I got several other interviews lined up -- only, the starting date for these jobs are a year from now, and I can&apos;t wait that long without a proper job (I have student debts to pay). &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Another caveat: While this company pays a low starting salary, bonuses are fairly generous, and there are a lot of perks like business-class travel only (while most other companies allow entry-level employees to only fly economy class).</description>

	<title>Campaign stiffs campaign workers, won&apos;t respond. Solutions?</title>

	<description>Local political campaign reports a large surplus four days after stiffing its workers (I and dozens of other campaign workers are owed back pay, several of us in the $300+ range).  Solutions? This was an unsuccessful bid for a NY City Council seat.  (I&apos;m not directly naming the candidate or any individuals in this post, just as a courtesy -- trying not to saturate people&apos;s google results with this because A) I don&apos;t know yet what happened and B) the candidate has done great things for the community and I still really believe in his achievements.  But there&apos;s an article at nypost.com&lt;/a&gt; and several of the campaign workers are blogging about it, so it&apos;s not exactly a secret).&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The campaign hired all its workers at $15/hr.  On Election Day (the 15th of September), we were told to come pick up our checks on the 18th of Sep., with no indication that anything would be wrong with them (and throughout the entire campaign they were still actively asking us to bring new people, friends and relatives, to come work at $15/hr).  &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
At 9pm on the 17th, we got a group email saying the campaign would only pay us $10/hr and we should not come in on the 18th; instead, the $10/hr checks were mailed.  According to the article linked above, the campaign reported a significant surplus four days after sending out our partial-payment checks on the 18th.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The sole public statement from the campaign, given at the reporter&apos;s request for that article, was &quot;Everyone has been paid or their check has been sent to them in the mail.&quot;  That is, needless to say, an extremely disingenuous (and bad-faith) non-response.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Several campaign workers got together and wrote a formal group email to the campaign&apos;s email address asking for a resolution (there was no answer, and now that address is apparently no longer accepting emails), and started a blog with the basic facts, then filed a formal complaint with the Campaign Finance Board after it was clear that the campaign wouldn&apos;t respond (that complaint is now pending).  Many workers have attempted to contact the campaign managers (using known-good phone numbers and email addresses), receiving no responses whatsoever.  Only the Field Coordinator has been responsive, but she has no relation to the campaign&apos;s finances.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
One thing I have not done is cash the partial-payment check they mailed me on the 18th, on the suspicion that cashing it could be seen as implicitly accepting it as correct payment.  &lt;strong&gt;(Please share opinions re. whether that&apos;s a wrong suspicion, because I seriously need that money.)&lt;/strong&gt;  For me, and for at least a dozen other people who also started towards the beginning of the campaign, these partial checks sent on the 18th were the second or third of the weekly checks we received.  Our earlier first checks were all correct, $15/hr, agreeing with our timesheets.  I did cash my correct earlier check, as I think all of us did.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
My own financial position means the money I&apos;m still owed (several hundred dollars) is clearly worth time and effort in material terms, not just on principle.  Are there steps to be taken while we wait for the Campaign Finance Board to review the complaint?  And more importantly: would even the best-case result of that review produce money for us, or would it just produce something like censure or fees for the campaign?</description>

Like tens of thousands of people in my part of the world, I get my &quot;cable&quot; TV via a satellite dish on my roof, pointing at a geostationary satellite.  By my understanding, satellites have a limited life-span - am I right in thinking that this is probably more relevant to orbital satellites that will eventually fall out of orbit? - but in any case, a stray rock might hit my Austar satellite and render it useless.&lt;br&gt;

	<title>Pay for Flex?</title>

	<description>What, anecdotally speaking, are Flex developers getting paid right now in Los Angeles or a similar city? I have been to the salary calculators and such, they tend to come back with a number up around $120k or so- but I&apos;m not sure how &quot;real world&quot; that is. I&apos;m a Flex developer with about 2 years experience in Flex, and 10 years programming overall. I consider myself an expert in Flex/AS3 (have written my own framework, used all the major ones, can explain their strengths and weaknesses, and stuff like that).&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I&apos;m interested in knowing, if I put myself on the market tomorrow, what salary could I expect to find in Los Angeles for full-time? How about as a consultant? How high is the demand, really? Mostly just looking for anecdotes, but hard data is welcome if it&apos;s more specific than those generic salary calculators.&lt;br&gt;

	<title>CA Labor Law: Salary to hourly demotion</title>

	<description>CA Labor Law: A friend has been demoted from salaried to hourly after giving notice.  Is this illegal?  He thinks there may have been a law passed a few years ago banning a salary to hourly demotion.  True? My friend was a kitchen manager with no hiring/firing power (in California); he gave notice last month and planned to leave at the beginning of August.  Now with about a month to go, he has been demoted to his former position of Line Cook and his pay has decreased and gone from salaried to hourly.  There has been no complaint against work. &lt;br&gt;

The person taking over his kitchen manager job has simultaneously been upgraded to salaried and is in training for the new position.  His boss essentially just did a switch-a-roo between the two workers.&lt;br&gt;

My friend thinks this may be illegal in CA (possibly a new-ish law).  If it is illegal, is there a .gov website that clearly states the law?</description>

However, although the editor&apos;s email was very positive, and they want to make it a feature article, there was no mention of pay.  &lt;br&gt;

This is a well trafficked site with a number of big name professional writers (again, within the aforementioned limited field) writing for them, who I assume are not working for free.  The article submission guidelines did not mention compensation one way or the other.  So, uh...how do I hint that I would like money? 	<title>I want to fire my temp agency</title>

	<description>I work through Kelly Services in a long-term temp position at a huge multinational. I got a phone call today from Kelly Services saying they were giving all professional employees at the MNC a 5% pay cut, effective June 29. What can I do -- besides walk? Though, of course, Kelly Services is claiming that the MNC directed the change, a manager (not my own) at the MNC tells me that is not the case at all. MNC (at least, at this location) has a hiring freeze, but employees have not had pay cuts or layoffs. I would walk out over this, but I have to feed my kids.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I think my boss might be willing to work with me to get around it. My employment is at-will. How would I become an independent contractor? Or come in through another agency? How would I find out whether that is possible? This being a MNC, I can&apos;t imagine I&apos;d get too much help from HR, but if I can figure out how to do it, I believe my boss would be willing to undergo some hassle to get this done for me.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Secondarily, another time Kelly Services did something dodgy, with our vacation pay, someone filed a class action lawsuit and I got a notification in the mail that I was part of the class unless I opted out. Is it possible to &lt;em&gt;fight&lt;/em&gt; this pay cut? How? Is it significant that we are all getting individual phone calls, but nothing in writing?&lt;br&gt;

I, on the other hand, am blessed with parents who can pay for what&apos;s left of my schooling after scholarships, and still live at home. I have plenty of money, and I would not mind at all helping pay for my ring. But, that might hurt his ego and is completely untraditional. &lt;br&gt;

It&apos;s not like I&apos;m some selfish brat who wants some big flashy ring, (the one we&apos;re looking at is $1,000.. I know that&apos;s a lot but it&apos;s not crazy is it?). I want a conflict-free diamond and I found EXACTLY what I want at brilliantearth&apos;s website. He&apos;s just wanting to wait and propose when he has more money, but goodness I feel like we should be engaged already! We won&apos;t be married until we graduate, or right before, but I really think it doesn&apos;t do us justice not to be engaged. I&apos;m ready to be officially committed, and I know he is too- he&apos;s just worried about money.&lt;br&gt;

He could get a cheaper ring, or a promise ring? And then we upgrade later? But if I can afford to help, why not? 	<title>Going from full-time to contract work?</title>

	<description>A friend of mine is giving his notice tomorrow due to long hours and high stress not being worth it in the end.  He would, however, be open to returning as a contractor or part-time, with limited hours and role.  How does this work? The friend is pretty highly credentials (masters in finance and CPA), with both &quot;Big 4&quot; and corporate experience totalling about 6 years.  He&apos;s fairly indispensable in his current role, which just makes it more stressful.  He&apos;s already tried to get some of the tasks off his plate (for over a year at this point), with no success, and the company, like many, is in a hiring freeze so there&apos;s no relief coming.  However, if he could lock in 16-20 hrs/week, maximum, to do the truly important tasks, he&apos;d be ok with that.  That being said:&lt;br&gt;

Is coming back as a contractor something he should offer while tendering his resignation, or should he hope that the boss brings it up?&lt;br&gt;
It seems like in this situation, working part time could eventually lead to full-time hours at part time salary, and contracting would be a better way to contain the hours.  Is that a reasonable interpretation?&lt;br&gt;
Is it better/easier to contract directly with the company, or go through a third-party firm?&lt;br&gt;
What hourly rate can one expect?  He&apos;s in a Seattle suburb at a rather large manufacturing company (no, not boeing :)), if that helps.&lt;br&gt;

	<description>I&apos;m looking for salary guidelines for a job outside my field that I&apos;m interested in -- coordinating events and marketing for an indie bookstore. So I just had some conversations with the owner of an independent bookstore. They&apos;re looking for someone to manage events and marketing. The goal is to take the bookstore from its current, basic approach to the newer model of community engagement, frequent instore events, partnerships, big author events, etc. The job would involve the event planning, working with publishers, marketing, managing a presence on social networks, etc. It will also involve serving as the assistant manager, the second of two fulltime staff in the store. About half the time would go to the marketing and events, the other half to bookselling and management tasks. I wouldn&apos;t do hiring or payroll. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The store is in an affluent Northeastern college town. The goal is revenue growth through increased event sales, and increased overall sales from newly-built customer loyalty. So there are some success measures that can be built into this job.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
It&apos;s a newly created job; I would largely define what directions it develops in. I have all the required skills. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
We&apos;re at the stage where I need to communicate my salary requirements to them. I&apos;m coming from the world of nonprofit management, so it&apos;s not like I&apos;m expecting hundreds of thousands; I already work for modest wages. But I&apos;m afraid of both lowballing them, and coming in way too high, and I can&apos;t find any references. There&apos;s a baseline I need to make, but if I can beat it by a lot, I will definitely try. Does anyone have any idea what a job like this could command?</description>

	<description>Hired to host and produce video content for a PR firm. How much should I ask to be paid? Because they liked a previous project of mine, a PR firm wants me to to produce video content for a client of theirs. The client is basically a media industry group running a promotion campaign.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The jobs will vary but it seems there will be two main kinds. Sometimes I will do funny interviews with people for 2-3 minute videos to be posted online. The firm will arrange for the filming, but I will do the editing (which I expect to be minimal).&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The other job would be creating funny video shorts that I would write, produce, and act in. I would ask for a small production budget to get a crew and such, but I&apos;m unsure what I myself should receive in compensation for something like this.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I&apos;ve already been given the obligatory speech about how times are tough and the budget for the campaign has been slashed. I really don&apos;t have any idea what I should be paid for this, and I haven&apos;t found anything too useful in previous Ask Mefi posts. Can anyone give me an idea what I should expect to be paid for either job?</description>

	<title>Severance packages a thing of the past?</title>

	<description>Severence package in the current economy? I&apos;ve been with my current company for over four years.  I started as a temp and within a few months was hired on as a FT permanent employee. It&apos;s a very small company and office, so early on I was the only Admin.  Within months I was promoted from receptionist to Exec Admin and then Office Manager. By that time we&apos;d hired a FT receptionist and two accounting people.  I did pretty much everything except the accounting, and did it well.  My reviews were flawless. At the first one my two supervisors had nothing negative to say at all. It pretty much came down to they really enjoyed working with me and were very happy with my work.  The second review was pretty much the same and I got a higher than expected increase in salary.  All was well and life was good.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The nature of the business is real estate development.  Over the last 2 years, two projects have failed. Thankfully my boss has several other businesses and projects in the works and he was able to keep me employed working on many of these projects.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Fast forward to late last year.  I was assigned two projects that have been shakey from the start.  There was less and less for me to do as these projects worked their way through funding and city approvals, etc.  Bossman told me that my hours were going to be cut back until these two projects got going.  I was surprised because no one else in the office was having their hours cut back, but what could I do.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I emailed my boss yesterday to see when I would be getting paid for the last half of January.  I also asked a couple other questions having to do with my health care coverage and why I was the only one who&apos;d had their hours cut.  Well, he wrote back that one of the two projects&apos; funding had just been cut and would not be coming through and that &quot;if you can find other employment, you should take it&quot;.  Sounds pretty final, huh.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Based on what&apos;s happened in the past, I intend to go in and ask for a severence package.  Bossman has always taken care of his employees, but I&apos;m not sure if in this economy that practice still holds true.  In the past he&apos;s paid for one gal&apos;s health insurance for 3 months, and set up another struggling gal in an apartment (paid for the movers, 1st &amp;amp; last, etc).  Of the current employees I&apos;ve been there at least 2 years longer than any of them.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Would I be out of line to ask for (and expect) 6 months of health insurance (med &amp;amp; dental) and $4k severance pay ($1/year of employment)?  What else, if anything, can or should I ask for?  I know times are tough, but I&apos;ve been there a long time and always done a good job.&lt;br&gt;

The excruciatingly long 8 weeks of between arriving in Seoul and getting my first paycheck have finally come to end, and that means one thing: I can finally stop being a hermit and get a cell phone. Of course, speaking no Korean, I haven&apos;t the first idea how to do actually do this. But, shockingly enough, my hagwon is being less than helpful. They&apos;re telling me to ask another teacher how to get one...who in turn is telling me to ask the school director for help. From what I&apos;ve been able to gather on the ever reliable net, getting a monthly plan is too expensive, too much of a hassle, and not really possible without a korean friend, a commodity of which I&apos;m still lacking in.  So the pay as you go plan seems the way to go...but how do I do it? Is it something I can do by myself? Where do I do it? Do i buy a phone first, and then go to a phone store to a buy a card or whatever? So confused....&lt;br&gt;

I have several repeating payments that I unfortunately have to check monthly as my pay date changes because the site invariably decides to take out the money one day before I get paid.  &lt;br&gt;

One of the biggest problems is that the time frame for the automatic payments is so long.  Many of my payments take up to 5 days to process because they are printing out and cutting checks.    &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
A For Example:  I am paying my internet bill.  The bill is set up to reoccur monthly.  The bill takes 4 days to process.  I have the bill set up on the 20th of the month so that the money comes out of my check on the 16th, the day after I got paid.  If the 20th is a Sunday then the bank pulls money out of my account on the 14th.  &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I know that I can change the date I pay bills and pay them later in the month so this won&apos;t be such an issue.  However, I want a automatic banking system that I don&apos;t have to babysit every month.  A bank that processes checks quickly would also be a plus.</description>

	<description>Calling Scottish MeFites and fellow Scottish diaspora - what&apos;s the job market like in Scotland at the moment, and am I mad to be considering moving back? Like many Scots, I moved down to England for a job after university.  I&apos;ve been down in London for nearly five years now, and I&apos;m thinking about moving back to Scotland in the next two years, possibly sooner.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I&apos;ve been in the job market since 2004, first working in the training/comms side of IT consulting, and now for the last two years as a writer and business analyst in recruitment advertising.  Lately I&apos;ve been thinking both about general life direction, and about missing Scotland (I blame the Scotland&apos;s History thing that&apos;s been playing on the Beeb, cursed iPlayer).&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I&apos;ve got a general plan over the next five or six years to save up and go back to uni to get a post-grad in Outdoor Education, and then to work in that field (not as random as it first appears, I did a lot of that with the TA before going down the comms path), so there&apos;s a few things I&apos;m trying to work out:&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
1) Does it make sense to stay in a (reasonably secure I think) London job, save like heck and go up to Scotland once I&apos;ve saved, while building outdoor experience as best I can in the South of England&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;or...&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
2) Should I (Can I?) take a similar paying, similar type of job in Scotland, or perhaps a paycut, but have the benefit of being close to friends and family, close to mountains and the sea and possibly getting more living space for the same or less money?&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Any Mefites who have done this, are doing this or are currently living in Scotland?  What&apos;s the job market like?  The job searches I&apos;m doing aren&apos;t telling me much (except that I&apos;d be sorted if I was a tax consultant or wanted to work for a bank).&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I&apos;m from Edinburgh originally, and would likely want to live in or around there, but would consider other areas if there were drastic differences in jobs markets or cost of living.</description>

I really like my job, and my benefits are great, but I feel like my base compensation is not quite what it should be. I&apos;ve done a bit of poking around on salary websites and have talked to a couple people in my field, and from what I&apos;ve seen it looks like I&apos;m getting paid probably about $6000 less per year than I &quot;should&quot; be. I think part of this is that, again, this was my first real job. The second part is that I&apos;m relatively young for this job.
