Is there a better solution than Excel?

I have over a hundred vintage sewing patterns (and about half again as many modern ones) and a fabric stash sufficient to make at least 2/3 of the patterns. I am looking for some sort of cataloging option. I'm using Excel, but it does not handle pictures well (right now, each pattern has a link to its page--assuming it has one--at vintagepatterns.wikia.com, but fabric swatches are not really archived online) and I'd like a system that's both visual and descriptive. What are the most flexible, classic beginner sewing patterns?

I have basic sewing skills and would like to improve and be able to make some clothing for myself and my (currently small) children. What I think I'd really like is to choose one (at a time) patterns/items of clothing and make it many many times, in different sizes, different fabrics, and gradually adding modifications as I become more comfortable with the basics. Origami paper patterns: what are these?

I'm folding a thousand origami cranes, and I'm starting to get curious about the patterns on the Japanese origami paper I'm using. I think I recognize a couple of them, but I'd like to know the significance of any you recognize: maybe they are traditional textile patterns or have other uses? Are they a certain flower, fruit, or season? Or maybe they are entirely made up for these packs of paper. [more inside]

It's not that I mind having more friends, but...

It seems that whenever I meet a woman I really like and think I have a connection with, she can only view me as a friend. I'm generally okay with this, because their great qualities as people is what attracted me to them in the first place, and those don't change just because she's not interested in me. But when it happens over and over and over again, it does make me wonder whether there's something I'm doing wrong. Why is it I'm consistently viewed as good friend material, but not good lover material? [more inside]

Fun print/pattern sheets for grownups (babies get all the good stuff)

I want queen cotton sheets with fun patterns to go under my boring grownup comforter. White or pale backgrounds, small repetitive prints. Where can I find them? I've been able to find isolated instances, but I want options! I currently have animal options in mind (e.g little elephants, whales, owls), or perhaps nice multi-color stripes. I might sacrifice my favorite niece or nephew for amazing octopuses or seahorses. Not kidding, I really am jealous of the babies and their magic crib sheets. Some examples of what I've already found are after the cut. [more inside]

How do I make my own cross-stitch pattern?

There is a quote I'd like to cross-stitch for my aunt for Christmas. I have lots of experience with doing cross-stitch from patterns, but zero artistic ability when it comes to creating something from scratch that looks the way I want it to. Is there an easy way for me to generate a pattern? Like, something where I can choose a font and maybe some little accent details and put it together and it gives me a pattern? Mine is a Linux/Android household, but I could probably borrow something from a friend if there's a great Windows/Mac/iOS application. [more inside]

Tried-and-tested knitting patterns for the short and bottom-heavy

I want to use up a stash of yarn and expand my wardrobe at the same time. I need knitting patterns for garments that are flattering for someone short (we're talking 5'2") and bottom heavy (weight largely in the belly and butt - and short legs to boot). Do you know of any such patterns? Would prefer a tried-and-true pattern so my efforts are less likely to go, well, pear-shaped. Bonus if the finished product is more suited for summer wear. Mefi Sewers! I am a beginning sewer and just found a fabulous vintage patterned length of fabric (two yards x 58 inches) at a thrift shop for two bucks. Design Patterns / Jazz Standards

Hello MeFi. I'm curious as to the correlation between software development Design Patterns for and Jazz Standards. Usual loot from Google: Some dude who thought of it first (and used it as a nice allegoric explanation in Programmers Stackexchange and a somewhat geeky ironic coding-related mention ("Jazz supports interaction through event listeners"). These are all nice examples of the basic similarity between the two, I'm looking for more, though. Are you aware of any materials that somehow approach this idea?

What are these visual phenomena?

I have the perfect question for the hive mind: Does anyone know the name for and reasoning behind the following visual phenomena: 1 The patterns you see when two fences (or any repeating "grid" of objects) pass each other (or appear to pass each other due to parallax) slightly out of phase. I was told the name for this and it bugs me that I've forgotten it. 2 The odd wobbling about you see in LED clocks when eating or (even more pronounced if you can do it) when "rolling" the letter R. The name is what I'm most interested in RE 1, and the reasoning for 2!

I want to think less frameworky

I've become habitually prone to categorizing mankind according to various schema, many of which are informed by social science. Are there common teeth/dental patterns? If so, what are they?

I'm really fascinated by teeth and their various shapes, arrangements, etc. I remember reading something a few years back that discussed several basic dental patterns, but I can't find it, or any info remotely like it. It was a fluff piece in a fashion mag I think, but I'm more interested in reading something slightly more substantial or scientific. Does there exist a taxonomy, or a conventionalized way for describing common dental patterns? Google searching yields little, and frankly, I feel like a bit of a freak for having such a weird attraction to these cute little things and all their delightful quirks. Bonus question, am I alone on this?
