Does anyone remember a list of logins and passwords, for a myriad of sites, published online for all the world to use? Its advertised purpose was to allow one to use a website without having to register for access... so you didn't have to go through all the steps, nor receive spam in your inbox later... I think it's been several years since I've even thought of this -- also, I feel it had some form of 'gator' or other reptile in its name.

So despite being fairly knowledgeable about these sorts of things, I put on my own little "worst practices in computer security" seminar with my Mac Mini HTPC. And, surprise of surprises, it was compromised. Help me figure out if I've reversed the damage, won't you?

How do I get my Mac to prompt me for a password hint on the startup screen?? I reset my password last week and I copied and pasted it in the password hint in case I forgot. It turns out I did. But for some reason it won't prompt me for a hint even though I have been trying to guess over and over incorrectly.

Install Linux or windows without a cd drive or usb just direct access to the hard drive. I have an old cf-29 toughbook by Panasonic that I've had for years. I'm trying to resurrect it and for the life of me cant remember my own cmos password. Aside from possibly nuking the bios password which will be near impossible due to the NATO standards this notebook was built to. I was thinking I would just try to install an OS directly to the hard drive and simply transplant it back into the toughbook.

I need to send an MP3 music file to a number of email addresses. I want to do this by directing people to a download on a web link, rather than emailing the (large) file direct.
I also want to be able to password-protect the file in that link (either the file or the link), so the music doesn't get passed around beyond the list of recipients.
Does anyone know of any good resources for this?
Thanks, oh wise ones.

PasswordBuffooneryFilter: I've had a Hotmail account for eons, don't use it a ton, get a couple things sent there on an ongoing basis. Had the password stored via Firefox and it has disappeared from the remember-password feature. It's been long enough that I don't remember the password-recovery info (favorite pet, etc.) and I didn't register an alternate e-mail (that they would use to send me the means to access the account). Based on the Microsoft info I've slogged through and Internet searches, it seems I'm sunk. Or am I?? Much gratitude for any help folks can provide.

Some major websites--such as Facebook, Vox and others (but not Metafilter!)--have users enter username & password on an http page rather than an https page. Is this as secure as logging in via https:// and if so, why?
