My mother is "Minnesota Nice" and it is driving me crazy

My mother (my kids' grandma) drives me crazy. She acts like she is interested in her grandkids, but honestly she wants nothing to do with them. How do I respond to her constant texts asking how everyone is doing if she really doesn't care and isn't going to help and is just texting out of guilt? [more inside]

"I don't know, what do you want to do?"

Help me break the decision-making stalemate. Partner and I are in committed multi-year relationship. One of the places we struggle communication-wise is in decision-making, especially when neither of us have a strong preference (for example, "what do you want for dinner" or "should we go out for breakfast tomorrow?". When this happens, several things may happen: My partner will parry my question back to me "do you have any preferences?" (and if/when I don't, nothing is resolved), one of us will say "I don't really care, whatever you want", or we will stalemate in an "I don't know, what do you want to do" loop. As you can probably imagine, this makes for super frustrating interaction. Does anyone with experience with this have any advice on breaking this particular pattern?

Does anybody ELSE manufacture an RFID tag with this spec?

I am looking for a very small, passive UHF RFID tag that works when affixed to containers of liquids. I have spent a long time carefully researching my requirements and I am certain that: - it has to be UHF, not HF and not NFC. - it has to be passive. - it has to be small (the other ones I've found are 14-20cm long which is completely unfit for my purpose). - it HAS to be functional when affixed to containers of liquids. I found a tag with the perfect spec: the Avery Dennison AD-110m5. Now all I have to do is get them to sell it to me. THIS IS THE HARD PART. [more inside]

How to deal with passive aggressive females?

There is a girl in my circle who has taken to completely ignoring me and making snide remarks in front of me. Let's call her J. For instance, I sat across J during dinner when our group was at a restaurant. J would talk to 1) the people next to her and 2) the people sitting next to me. She never once said so much as a word to me, and when I joined in a conversation J and other people are having, J quickly looks bored and turns away. You'd think from her behavior, we're all in middle school. Nope, we are 21 years old and in college. This is also our church group (ha, ironic). I've pretty much ignored J's antics for the past 5 months, but since she hangs out with us a lot, it's becoming difficult to ignore. I'm wondering when she'll let the phase subside, and if I should even do anything? [more inside]

Who pays for the maintenance of financial indexes?

In index mutual funds, many of the decisions on portfolio construction are effectively outsourced to the makers of financial indexes, thereby lowing costs for the fundholders. Doesn't this just push the costs to the publishers of these indexes? Someone has to decide which securities stay in and which ones go out. How do they get paid for this work when anyone can look up the constituents of the S&P 500 and construct a fund that just happens to share the same stocks without using the S&P name? Can Standard and Poor's somehow enforce licensing fees on institutions that do this? Do things work differently for the creators of more specialized indexes?
