Do you know why I pulled you over?

I got pulled over by a cop. I wasn't speeding, nor was I driving erratically.

P.S - My passenger was standing up with his torso out of the sunroof. So he asks for ID, and goes through with the checks. He returns saying that he's going to let us off. He also made a note of the following, for both, my passenger and I.

Place of Birth
Eye colour
Height
Weight
Clothing Description
Facial Hair
Any Tattoos or Piercings?
Phone Number

So what's the deal? Is this being recorded somewhere? Was I given a warning (He didn't literally say anything along the lines) ?

I'm thinking this was just him entering it into his log for the night.

Please shed some light

Anonymous just cause I'm paranoid.

Is it illegal to drive without a passenger side mirror?

Is it illegal to drive without a passenger side mirror? I have a 2-door 2001 Honda Civic with a missing passenger side mirror. I will be driving across the country to the NY/NJ area soon, and I'm worried that I may be pulled over because of this damage. Do the laws differ from state to state on this, or are they uniform? I have had no trouble in California or Arizona.

How to fairly split costs on a roadtrip

What's the fairest way to split gasoline and other costs between riders on a roadtrip? We will travel in Japan, and there are many variables in our trip, but I imagine the same information could be used in light of the rise in gas prices in north america!

-One person will incur costs traveling by train to our start point.
-We will travel by toll road.
-We will pick one person up along the way, incurring costs when we exit from the toll road. Does that rider pay the entire cost? Is he responsible for his share of our entire toll burden, or only the cost from his point of pickup?
-Also, should all riders split gasoline evenly, or only depending on how far they travel (eg: we split gas 3 ways until we pick up our 4th rider, then split it 4 ways)?

Because I own the car, I am interested in collecting as much money as I can--I have to think about oil, wear and tear, and cleaning time. Would it be fair to split the entire cost of our trip between all the riders evenly?

Heading out in twos.

Tips for motorcycle passengers? What do you tell first-time motorcycle passengers? With the arrival of riding season, I want to take friends out riding and I'm looking for good tips to help passengers feel more comfortable and safe when we go two-up. Ideally, such tips should be easy for non-cyclists to understand, ie: "Look over my outside shoulder when we bank in a turn, not the inside one" instead of "Don't lean."

How much will it cost me to get out of your dreams and into your car?

As a career passenger, when/how much should I chip in for the occaisional ride I get from friends? Roadtrips not included, since I know enough to chip in on those and work it out beforehand... Other considerations - does it matter:
- how well I know the person?
- how planned the drive was?
- if we stop at a gas station on the way?
- if they were going my way anyways?

And what length of drive do you think merits this consideration?

I certainly don't mind contributing, but since I've never bought gas (or insurance, etc) it's never occurred to me before, so I'd like some drivers' perspectives. Obviously there are no exact answers, but what do you do - or wish your passengers would do?

CDL passenger endorsement about to be suspended! What do I do? OK, so I got a letter in the mail stating my commercial driver's license passenger endorsement is about to be suspended indefinitely on Nov. 8th for 'disqualifying criminal arrest and/or conviction record'. So it says I have until Nov. 8th to submit a written request for a hearing on the matter, including my reasons for why the suspension is undeserved.

Full disclosure: I have prior misdemeanor drug arrests (weed), but nothing that would disqualify me to my knowledge.

Is it a waste of time to try and fight this? Should I get a lawyer? Any advice from people who've found themselves in similar situations? Can I at least write the letter myself so I don't need to pay a lawyer to have it written for me?

I have my CDL A which is not being suspended, so I can work, but I need the passenger endorsement to drive a tour bus. This is in New Jersey, so any local help is welcome. Understandably, MMMV and YANML.
Is it legal to be a passenger in an uninsured vehicle?

Can you ride as a passenger in an uninsured vehicle without legal ramifications? As always, there is Just as a refined version of the question: In the state of New Jersey, if one is caught (whether by being pulled over or in an accident, or something else I haven't thought of) riding as a passenger in an uninsured vehicle, will that person have any liability for the driver/car being uninsured? This is assuming, if it matters, that the passanger has no legal relationship with the driver (i.e. marriage, co-ownership of place of residence)

Help me MeFi, you're the only way to satisfy my curiosity!

By the way, if anyone knows of anywhere that I could find more information on this, preferably somewhere that was well-respected/official in nature, that'd be even more fantastic!

Backseat Driver

I've been driving a car for about a decade now, and it's suddenly occurred to me that I'm now completely paranoid about anyone else driving me somewhere. I'm constantly checking the mirrors while they drive, and getting stressed because I think they should be braking sooner or driving in a different lane. It even happens when I catch a bus. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you get over it?
