How does the sudden departure of a person from a group of friends influence the mood of the rest? Or: Is it wrong to simply leave if you don't feel like partying?

I was invited to a British-themed costume party this Friday and I have no clue who/what to be! The only rule is to dress as a British person/thing, but I have a few restrictions of my own. Both individual and couple's ideas are welcome.

On Saturday, I'm having a french themed cooking party. The idea is that we all cook collaboratively to make a meal together. So far we have five confirmed guests. So far we Cassoulet and Reiene de Saba (cake) on the menu. Please suggest ideas for menu items and ways to pull off the timing. I have an induction cook top with five burners, two ovens, a fairly large kitchen with lots of counter space, and most basic cooking implements-but if there's something specialized you think I should have, please share that too! Also I own mastering the art of French cooking and the joy of cooking so I'd like to stick to recipes in those cookbooks or available on the web! thanks!

My boyfriend is turning 29, and so we're throwing a party and inviting lots of people. We've splurged a bit on food - going to have an italian place cater family-style food - but are hoping to save money in every other respect. Luckily, our condo building has a beautiful gathering room that we're going to use. We're purchased a bunch of wine from Trader Joe's and are hoping to not serve it in plastic party cups, but don't want to buy a huge supply of wine glasses. Are there any creative tricks or decorating ideas that will make us feel classy but won't break our small bank?

My husband and I are throwing our very *first annual* Christmas party. We just bought a house, and I've been dying to entertain in it. The thing is, though, I don't want it to be too "grown up" - ya know, a boring adult party. Our number one requirement for our wedding was that the reception be fantastically fun - where everyone dances all night and no one sits around awkwardly, being bored. This is the kind of party I want.
I don't want it to be boring BUT I do not want it to be because people are drunk out of their minds (I cannot stand ridiculously drunk behavior).

Longtime lurker, first post. Could you help with some ideas for a white elephant gift exchange party with my coworkers. The company is a fairly conservative large corporation. The gift needs to be secular, inoffensive, good humor and under $20. Last year some popular gifts were Snuggie, Dilbert calendar and so on.. Food/wine seems to be ok but not popular. Any trendy gifts for 2010 or techtoys will also help. Thanks much.

I'm looking for some free library shorts or documentaries that I can find online about architecture or Buckminster Fuller or space travel or any of the sort from the 60s through the 80s that are very graphical and would be good to project onto a wall on a short loop as a backdrop for a party. Can you point me to some of these?

My boyfriend and I were sitting around one night listening to an extensive amount of circus music I had the thought... we totally need to put on a circus-themed party. We found and booked a venue with a good friend who owns a bar, booked a few performers (jugglers, contortionists, musicians, all close friends). The date is set, place booked, now for the promotion which will make or break the event.
