Please help me find some events, nice restaurants, and semi-formal occasions to get really dressed up for in and around southern New England, and not feel overdressed, for a bunch of 45-year-olds?

I don't like fancy dress parties but I have to go to one tonight. The theme is '18 certificate movies'. I would like to wear a suit, preferably my light grey pinstripe one, I don't like to wear ties. I have hair, medium length, that I can wear loosely or slicked back. Is there any character from an over 18 movie you can think of that, perhaps with some easy accessorizing, I can 'imitate'?

Going to an engagement party tonight, as a guest. Is it okay if I wear a white dress? Is it a faux pas? The dress is a simple white shift mini dress with cap sleeves and silver flecks. I'm wearing opaque black pantyhose to give it a mod look, but I have been told with a 50/50 response that it's not okay to wear white to an engagement party. What do you think?

In a month or so I'll be going to a pretty epic 80's themed college party. I need ideas for a costume/ where to get it. I've read up on some websites with suggestions, but I figured metafilter would have better taste. I am a thin white male. I am willing to pay up to $100 but would prefer less than that.
