Good part-time jobs (UK) / how to fund a Masters

What can I do to support myself but also have spare time to spend studying? (So ideally it would be well-paid (not minimum wage).) I'm prepared to do a few months of prep work to be able to get that sort of work. I have a Maths degree, but not much recent work experience. Learning Wordpress? or some other coding thing? (I have a basic level of ability to program, but not enough to make an app or anything.) Something else? [more inside]

So confused/indecisive about work and career as a mom

I have worked part time since my son was born six years ago. He is now in 1st grade and gets home around 3 p.m. on the bus. I am thinking that it's time for me to go back to work full time for several reasons, but I am agonizing over my decision and it's driving me crazy. [more inside]

How to deal with an opinionated, overbearing mom (re my kid & childcare)

My mom has many, many opinions on how we are caring for our son (from what we give him for breakfast to the chores he should have, ugh), and she loves to share them. All the time. Especially in emails (joy). Here's the situation: I am considering going back to work full time but I am sure my mom will voice her displeasure. [more inside]

Help me figure out a new part time work schedule

I am going back to work, after a year of maternity leave, as an architectural designer in November and would like to work part time, mostly from home. My boss and office is quite flexible about me deciding my own hours in the future. Trying to figure out how to maximize time spent at work while reducing stress & commute times in order to balance home & work life. I also have questions about holiday pay for part timers. How do I convince my employer to let me go from full-time to part-time?

I plan on leaving my current job to pursue making art for a living before summer is out. This means my wonderful, supportive wife and I will be dependent on her salary alone until I can get all that sweet, sweet art lucre flowing. This will be a sustainable situation, but won't necessarily be an ideal one. I'd like to attempt to ask to go from full-time salaried to part-time salaried, for some added financial peace of mind. I am not sure how to best approach my manager about this. [more inside]

How to find part-time fulfilling jobs

I'm looking for a new job. I've been a library assistant for years and I'm tired of the stultifying atmosphere and conservative coworkers. This is partly made worse by my current work environment which I've loathed ever since I moved like 2 years ago. It just so conservative and small-minded, the kind of place where someone finishing the milk without replacing it would be the source of recrimination and speculation for weeks. [more inside]

Can you start Monday?

I've been offered two jobs. They both seem to be stuck in administrative office hell and I'm waiting around for them to actually give me any hours of work. I've had a paper job offer in my hand for over a month for one job, and a couple of weeks for the other job. I've been to inductions and initial training for both the jobs, so it's not like a vague verbal job "offer" that someone's changed their mind on. Both jobs are with local authorities, so they are big, legitimate organisations rather than small-time outfits. When do I stop chasing, and what should I do in the meantime? [more inside]

How can I work full time from home and take care of a baby?

I am a 32 year old female and have a full-time job. I've been working from home for 6 years now. My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage and having a baby. We're trying to figure out if it's going to be possible for me to still work full-time from home while also raising a baby. I found a lot of articles about it being possible to cut back on hours or work part-time only, but I don't want to do that (insurance and financial reasons). He works full-time as well and not from home and we want to try to avoid day care (or at least use it minimally). Has anyone ever successfully done this? If so, I'd love to know how. What was good/bad about it?

I wanna work part-time! Wah!

I've come to realize that maybe the key to my mental health is finding a situation where I only have to work 20-30 hours a week (supplementing income with an at-home gig). Are there fields where jobs like that are more common? In applying to such jobs, should I specify in my cover letter that I would like to work part-time, or does that just highlight what a lazy bum I am? [more inside]

Best way to learn French in my spare time?

Hi everyone, I am a 24 y/o English native about to start a PhD in London. During the next 3 years, I would very much like to begin learning French alongside my doctoral studies, and I am interested in finding out the most effective and efficient way of going about this. Realistically I will probably be able and willing to dedicate between one and two hours a day to studying French. I am interested in learning to both speak and write the language in equal measure. Any advice is much appreciated.
