Never thought I would be posting a question along these lines, but here we go.
So I had an external hard disk with two partitions. One NTFS and one HFS+. The NTFS partition was empty. I wanted to use the NTFS partition with Time Machine so I used Disk Utility to reformat it HFS+.
When the format had completed, yes, the NTFS partition was now HFS+ BUT
the other partition had disappeared. When I looked at it in disk utility it had a name like "disk32s". [more inside]

I have a windows laptop with only 128G SSD hard drive, which is not partitioned, only with one partition C: .
I want to install Linux aside from the original windows 7 so I can have double OS. There are about 15G empty space I gues it's enough. I think I need at least two partitions in order to do this.
So I went to Computer Manage storage trying to shrink the C:, however, it shows 0 shrinkable space. Why is this?
Should I run Disk Defragment? Anyone can help me out? And it's appreciated if you can give me some detailed step by step instructions, ie, how to mount partitions.
I'm a newbie to linux and what I'm trying to install is elementary OS Luna. if you can share with me some introductory articles on the basics of the system adminiatraion, OS install stuff it will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much!

I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]

What's the story with Windows and big disks? Specifically, Windows 7 and a 3tb drive.
I've read what Microsoft and others say about using large drives with Windows 7. I gather it works. However, I haven't found a how-to guide that actually spells out how to get the thing done.
In my case, it would not be the boot drive. I'd boot off an SSD and use the 3tb drive for storage. How can I do a clean install on that? I've tried and Windows doesn't see all of the 3tb drive. (The GPT format option is greyed out.)
Then, if I get Windows to recognize the 3tb drive, can I partition it into multiple logical drives? So, for example, the SSD would be C: and I'd split the big drive into D: and E: . Doable?

XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated. [more inside]

I've somehow corrupted my GPT table on my Windows 7 box and i'm wondering if there is a way to recover/recreate this table. The MBR is fine and windows 7 still boots. Parted/Gparted cant see the partitions though (looking at the corrupted GPT) and it's becoming an issue because i'm attempting to dual boot with Ubuntu.

PartitionFilter: I just got a new machine with Windows Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. I'm planning on doing a fresh installation of Windows 7 when I get it, but in the meantime I'd like to get settled in Windows Vista. Is there a good strategy to partitioning the 640GB HD so I can migrate with ease? Was thinking of having two partitions, one for OS, one for Program Data / Storage, and then wiping the OS partition when Windows 7 comes through. Advice?
